Seeking Breast Clinic in New York City

I've been trying to wean my 14 month old son off breastfeeding for few weeks, and I started to have pain in my right breast since last night. It looks like one of the ducts is clogged with curd like substance, I tried to express and clear the duct but the redness and the pain is still there. When I quit nursing with my daughter 2 years ago, I had a breast massage clinic in Japan (Oketani method) so I didn't have any troubles. I'm looking for a clinic similar to that in the new york city area, with a holistic/natural approach. Thank you

What can I do next?

I don't have any references for a breast clinic, but I have one suggestion you may try. I breast fed both my children until they were 2 years old. If I felt engorged or my breast was red - mastitas, I would take a cabbage leaf and put it over my breast. This may sound weird - but the properties in the cabbage draws out any extra fluids - and it really helps. Cabbage is very good for swelling in the body as well. Hope this helps

If you live near Riverdale (the northwestern section of the Bronx), you may want to seek the assistance of Margot Mann of the Riverdale Lactation Center (www.lactationcenter.com). She can be reached at ###-###-####.

I utilized her services nearly 6 years ago with my daughter and I have never forgotten how gentle and encouraging she was. When many try to make a first-time mother feel like they can do nothing "right" ("That's not how I did it..."), she was very supportive.

I pray you will contact her soon. God Bless You.

Hi
I would recommend looking up a local la leche league chapter for help/info. I am looking to finish weaning my son and am feeling nervous about that very thing! If you find an Oketani-type clinic in NYC I'd love to know too. Also, there are a few thing you can do to clear the duct that's plugged now. Drink lots of water and rest! You can search online for other numerous tips/suggestions. One that works well especially after massaging the duct in a hot shower, is to lay your son on a bed and nurse him from above with your head lower than your butt, and he should be positioned so his chin is hitting the plugged duct helping to massage it, and gravity is working to get the duct cleared. But you might feel like this would be undermining your weaning. Maybe you could try expressing in this admittedly awkward and somewhat humorous position;) I don't know what all you know/tried, so let me know if you need some more suggestions. Best of luck. Welcome to new york!

I don't know of any such clinic, but the lactation consultant that I work with might know. Her name is Ayelet Kaznelson and her phone number is ###-###-####. She is into all things holistic and is incredibly knowledgeable, smart, and really friendly and thorough. Good luck.
