We would like to finish our basement but don't know which contractors to ask, or who to trust to do a good job. Can anyone recommend someone who was really good doing a basement, addition, or remodel?

Hi G.. We finished our basement five years ago. It was done by a small company called Remodel-Pro. They did a fantastic job, and I highly recommend them. The owner is Matt, and the website is: www.remodel-pro.com. Good Luck.

Try Alan Johnson, Alan Johnson Construction. He's a great guy and very trustworthy. He lives in Plymouth. He's been doing remodeling for 20 years and specializes in basements and decks. You can call him at ###-###-####. Let him know that A. from BNI referred you. Good luck!

We used Bruce Freeman from Excellence in Remodeling to do our 2nd story and 1st floor renovation. He's done basements, kitchens and other restorations for friends and neighbors. The #1 reason I would recommend Bruce is that he is ETHICAL and TRUSTWORTHY. I have friends that have lost $$ with contractors who have financial issues. Bruce has done 2 projects for us and did a good job of recycling what he could use to keep the price down, he looks at energy efficiency and is really trustworthy.

I can recommend Platinum Remodeling - Josh Shonkwiler. ###-###-####. He's been our contractor for nearly 5 years and has done both a basement, kitchen and bath on our prior home to a remodel at my office. He's highly recommended by Angie's List and one of the extra perks is that all the guys doing the work are his employees and not sub contractors (with the exception of hvac or electrical contractors). This means he does control his guys, the quality of work and completion is under his control, you are not at risk for lien waivers from subs or fluctuating job prices because of changing sub bids, and he carries proper licensing, insurance and workers compensation. It is rare to find a quality, affordable contractor who employs his crew and does not sub all that work out. Josh is excellent and I have no problem putting my repuation on the line about his.

We just finished a kitchen remodel and had a really great experience with our contractor, Troy Meyen Homes. Our kitchen was gutted and we did all new wood flooring on the first level. All of this was done in 6 weeks, which is unheard of for kitchens. You can contact Troy at ###-###-####.
Goodluck,

They are based in the east metro, but may travel. We had a great experience with an addition done by Michael Lee Remodeling. It is a division of Kootenia Homes, based in Woodbury. They also did my neighbor's basement and my neighbor's were also very pleased. They weren't the cheapest contractor, but also not the most expensive. They were very pleasant to work with and finished ahead of schedule. The city inspector even commented on what a high quality job they did. I had a few minor complaints, but they were very minor given the size of the project. Good luck.

Hi G.,
We are currently building a home in Shorewood and will be moving there in Feb. We are using Jason Carsten with J. Carsten Homes. He does a lot of remodels and builds a couple homes a year. Very organized and trustworthy. I think you can find his website if you look up J. Carsten Homes. Good luck!
