I have a 7 month old who is doing very well on baby food. I also have a 7 year old, so I guess I do not remember much from her infancy. My 7 month old continues to show the signs that she is ready for finger foods, but everytime I give her something small, like a piece of toast, or biter biscuit, she chokes. Is it to early?? I guess I have forgotten after all these years. How do you introduce finger foods and when?????

What can I do next?

Try Cheerios. Also, Gerber makes a snack from fruits and veggies that looks like a star or snowflake shape piece of cereal or something. I can't remember what they are called but you get them in the baby food aisle. They dissolve in the mouth. My kids loved them. Also, try using a baby feeder. You put the food in a mesh bag and close the end. The baby can mouth the bag and get the taste but not the big chunks of food. Finally, try mashed banasnas.

That's funny, I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old and it didn't take long for me to forget either! I started those Gerber Fruit Puffs with my daughter and it was great because they basically just disolve in her mouth, but she feels like she's eating real food. She was late starting though, I think. She didn't eat from a spoon until about 6 and a half months and finger foods at 8 months or so. I hope that helps.

I don't think it's too early. My 11 month old has been eating finger food since 7 months. Try things like cheerios or the Gerber cookies I believed called Arrowroot cookies. They do mush but don't really break off like the biter biscuits. I also use things like mac & cheese, spaghetti o's... they are easy to pick up and musy easily in her mouth. My daughter used to act like she liked it then gag. One weekend it all changed! She realized she was actually supposed to swallow it! Oh and the little Goldfish crackers are great too! GOOD LUCK!

I have a 13 month old son so it hasn't been too long since we were in the first stages of feeding solids. The one finger food that I gave hime was the Gerber Fruit Puffs or the Vegetable Puffs. He was around 7 or 8 months when I introduced these puffs to him. They dissolve in their mouth so the fear of choking was somewhat reduced. I actually just gave him these puffs for a few months. I know that they are usually found in the baby food section of the grocery store.

Hope this helps.

Hi C.,
it is about 10 months old when you can start doing the biter biscuits, small soft french fries, bread, etc. After that within two months you will see her start eating just about anything she can.

Hi C.,

I think you better wait till she turn a year old. I have a 5 y/o son. I started give him finger foods when he turn 1 yr. old. Giving her finger foods now is too early. This is my number ###-###-#### if in case you want to know more things. I will do my best to help you since i am babysitting 10 months old baby. That is why i still have an idea when it comes to babies/kids. I live in Dallas, GA too.

I have a 4 year old and 6 month old. My 6 month old will still not eat solids. I've tried Rice cereal, applesauce, sweet potato. She still has the tongue thrust and gag reflex. That said, my friend has a 7 1/2 month old and he eats the zwieback teething toast, no problem. So I guess babies are just all different. I would try things and if she chokes, wait a week and try again. Or you can get those mesh feeders where you put small pieces of fruit in them and they suck on the mesh and get small bits.

Dear C.,

Have you tried food of a different texture than the toast and biter biscuit? Some babies respond to the texture of the food not the food itself. Meaning she might be ready for the finger food but doesn't like the hard texture. If you try something softer and receive the same response I would hold off for another month and then try again. It may be that she remembers she choked on the first try and she just needs a little break to forget about that incident.
Hope this helps,
S. E

Hi C.,

Maybe you should try something that dissolves easy like the new gerber fingerfoods they come in veggies and fruit. They are small and easy to pick up. My ten month old loves them they make her feel independent. Hope this helps.

I have a 17 month old and his daycare actually started giving him food at snack time. He had some kids that were a little older and he would try to eat their food so his teacher asked if it was ok to start giving him some graham crackers and things like that. When they started giving it to him in his high chair and letting him feed himself he did great. He also did really good with the Gerber fruit and veggie puffs. They disolve really fast, I started out breaking them in half at first. He was probably 8 months old when they started giving him food.

My doctor says you should wait until between 9 - 12 months to start table foods. Has your child eaten the stage 3 baby foods yet? I would make sure your child is very comfortable with stage 3 foods because they have more chuncks they have to chew before going to table foods.

Hi C., try something softer. Banana bites, soft cheese and soft scrambled egg tiny bites of ham.And my very favorite at this stage was soup with the juice almost poured off where they can reach the small bites and/or crax soaked in the juice, let them pick it up themselves if they want and you fill in with other foods. Oh,yes- mac and cheese is great.Good luck sl
