Seeking Advice What Fertility Testing Should Be Done

My question is what testing should be done to see if I am fertile. I have been married for a few years and I know my husband is (he has 2 little ones already). We have never used protection really besides counting and I have never even come close in 2 years. I have asked a few different gyn's about testing and they just say not to worry or just don't give me a straight answer. I just would like to know where to begin and what I should be getting tested for as I am not getting any younger :) Thanks for any help you can provide in my search.

you say you've never used protection except counting, but have you guys actively TRIED to conceive. i would think that after about 4-5 months of activetly trying to conceive that you would want to have some testing done. good luck to you! prob the first test will be a blood test run on days 3 and 23 of your cycle to check for ovulation. are you using any ovulation predictor kit?

Hi L.,

I would say get your hormone levels tested first. Make sure your FSH and LH are in sync and at the levels they should be. And also check your thyroid, that can also play a big roll in your fertility.

My infertility specialist is located at Dallas Presbyterian and his name is Dr. Chantilis, he's the best!! If your OB's won't run any tests for you and you're this concerned, I would seek a specialist to get things started and see what their opinion is.

Dr. Chantilis ###-###-####

Good luck!

Hello L.,
I am new on mammasource and seeking fertility support aswell. To answer your question, all you would need to do is ask you Dr. to do some blood work and check all your harmones levels and then go from there. Your levels will tell you if you are ovulating a lot or not enough. That's where I started. Now I'm on "Clomid" and I've never been pregnant before so I am struggling on my first trial of trying to conceive. Keep a positive attitude and have faith. I'll keep u in prayer. Thank You.. M.

Coming from someone who has gone through infertility, I say when in doubt, get tested. If your ob/gyn will not test you, then go to a reproductive endocrinologist. He will give you all the tests you need to see if everything is "running" right. At the very least it will ease any concerns that you may have.

Before you start going to specialists etc, I'd try an ovulation prediction test kit (available from almost any drug or grocery store.) You may find that you THINK you know when you are ovulating, but don't really. Once you know when you are ovulating and have tried for a couple of months (no more than 3) without success, that's when I'd move to more aggressive measures including seeing a specialist.
