Seeking Advice for Burning Baby Bum!

My daughter is just about 5mo old.. Today she's had 3 hard stooled diaper changes and each one has her heaving like she's burning. No blisters and not really any rash. I don't know if its what she ate or not. I read on here it could be because of acidic foods/drinks but all I've given her, which was yesterday, is stage 1 apples for supported sitters. She ate all of one container. But I also realized she didn't really poop yesterday at all. Just trying to figure out what I can do to stop it...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies!! I appreciate all your advice and help. I will lay off the fruits until she's a little older. Her doctor said it's fine that she is having solids, as long as it's only once a day, which I've been doing. I've been doing that for about a month now, same time every day. Only today and yesterday she's had problems. Apples were kind of new, I've only fed them to her once before. But I typically give her veggies instead. Cereal we haven't been feeding her much, she doesn't seem to like it as much, not sure if it's the kind (sweet potato) or she's just not ready for that but whatever the case, we will retry feeding her cereal when she's closer to a year. But again, thank you!

This age shouldn't have fruits. You possible could be setting her up to be a picky eater with all the sweets you are giving her now. I always did veggies (for my 4 kids) for quite some time before I introduced sweets.

Apples are part of the BRAT diet which is to help kids that have loose bowels. Give her just breastmilk/formula for now and maybe some infant oatmeal but lay off everything else till she gets "normal".

My favorite rash ointment was called Butt Paste. If she is having hard stools, you can put some vaseline on a qtip and lubricate her.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with her eating solids, applesauce, or a whole stage 1 jar (it's only 2.5 oz.) at her age. My pediatrician had me start all of my kids of rice cereal by spoon after 4 months (they were all sleeping 12+ hours per night). By 5 months, they were up to a full 1/4 cup, had had rice, oatmeal, and barley cereals, and were starting orange veggies. I chose to wait until after veggies to give fruit, but that's subjective.

As for your question, if she's not red or rashy, she's probably just uncomfortable because her stools are hard and she didn't poop yesterday. Stick with what you're doing, but maybe cut a little back on cereal until she clears herself out, if she's eating it, due to the high iron content.
Good luck!

Applesauce is constipating. Hard stools indicate insufficient fiber and water. She didn't poop yesterday and she had 3 hard poops today - you want to remedy that. So I would not give her problem fruits right now and I'd increase her fluids (even water is fine as long as she's also eating regular nutrition). You want to avoid BRAT when there's constipation or stomach upset - that's Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. You DO give them when there is diarrhea. If you can mash up some prunes, you could try some of that - high fiber promotes bowel movements. Oatmeal would be okay, but not rice cereal. Not sure what else you give her at 5 months.

I'm not sure about Vaseline as a petroleum product on tender skin - we used Balmex or another thick-coat cream for diaper rash and other irritation. When you clean her, use plain warm water on a washcloth instead of wipes, pat her dry (don't rub) or air dry her if you can (I know it's tough in the winter and it's always "dangerous" to leave a baby without a diaper!

She should straighten out in a day or so. If the butt doesn't improve, you can contact the doctor, but usually these things resolve themselves.

i wouldn't be giving her any solids yet, maybe a little oatmeal but that's it.
and when you do start giving her baby food, stick with vegetables for a good long while. fruits are just asking for a lifelong sweet tooth.

Please don't give your baby food yet. She's too young. Every bit of food you put in her is less room for her formula or breast milk. She will have that food sit there and rot and cause other issues that you're seeing now.

She should only have formula or breast milk for another month or so then start with dry cereal mixed with formula or breast milk.

Your doc isn't right. Babies need the vitamins and nutrition in her bottle first and foremost. If you just cannot resist putting food in her underdeveloped stomach then give her a full bottle FIRST and then give her a couple of tiny bits to satisfy yourself because she really doesn't need food yet.

I would not give so much apples at one time it probably made her constipated and pushing those hard poops out hurts. Try mixing it with oatmeal or cereal so its not as strong.

Use some Vaseline on her bum like a lubricant so she can poop easier, you can apply it with a Q-tip. You can also put it all over her bum to protect from acidic poops.

If it doesn't go away call your doctor.

I'm surprised your pediatrician approved giving her solids at this age. Our pedi was pretty adamant that we not give our little ones solids until 6 months, and even then, only rice cereal for a month, then one kind of puree each week for several months. Feeding them solids too early is one of the things that can contribute to food allergies (i.e. an inappropriate immune response). Just stick with breastmilk or formula for now. She doesn't need solids just yet.
