Hello Mamas:We will be moving out of state in a few months.  I am not sure how to approach this issue.  My husband works for an airline and he flies home from GA on the weekends.  We have two ideas in mind.  One, since we have a truck..buy a covered trailer and move the things to storage in GA.  This should cost around 1500 for the trailer. The drive to Georgia is between 13-14 hours one way.    Two, rent a Pod and have them deliver it for us in GA.  The second idea cost would be around 3500-4000.  Do you have ideas?  We are trying to be as cost effective as possible. We are weighing the pro and cons of this. We are not eligible for relocation reminbursement from his company. Thank you for your advice..it is much appreciated.

What can I do next?

You could always rent a trailer from UHaul, that might be a little cheaper. They have one way rentals, but they are usually a little more. If you could manage to drop the trailer back at the same location as you pick it up it would be a lot cheaper. So if your husband could take a little each weekend that he comes home you could rent the trailer rather than purchasing and save some money. You may also look into renting a truck from UHaul that might be a money saving option. Good luck!

If you're going the "Pod" route, research the cost of companies that guarantee storage indoors or non-leaking containers. My brother-in-law's family used a pod to store things for a couple of weeks but when they got the pod back out of storage, it had been stored in an outdoor facility and had a leak, so many of their belongings were ruined from the leak and/or mildew growth after the leak. If it's just going from your current residence to your next residence, keep your fingers crossed that there is no rain as long as you have stuff in it.

What about renting Uhaul truck or trailer or one of the other rentals. I would think that would be cheaper than buying a trailer, unless you actually need a trailer. I've used Uhaul trailers that I pull with my pickup and I've also rented the trucks. This was for Air Force self moves. Check into it, it might be cheaper. Good Luck.

Personally, I would pay for the moving service by using the POD or truck delivery to your home.

I realize this is not the cheapest way but think about it....your furniture and belongings are insured and will most likely get there safely. It is also a lot less work for you so that you can be ready to do the work when they deliver.

Always remember...you get what you pay for.... Is it worth you, your hubby or someone helping you out of the goodness of their heart getting hurt etc???

Best wishes on your move!

When we bought the house we live in now, the former owners were moving to GA. They rented a large U-Haul truck and PAID professional movers to pack it. They did the box packing themselves to save a little money, but those pros were wonderful, and they got all their stuff in that truck. I saw it! I hired the same guys to move our stuff after I packed it. We've moved 5 times and only this last time did we have to pay to move ourselves. Fortunately, it was only 5 miles. But we've moved from state-to-state several times. I am praying the next move will be to the cemetery!
Good luck!

ABF U-pack. Highly suggest. If we were moving out of state again this is how we'd go. We moved here to TX from FL for under $1000. They bring you the semi-trailer, you pack it, and they drive it. Then a few days later, they drop of the trailer again and you have several days to unpack it. Best of luck to you.

I would buy the covered trailer. Not to be paranoid but at least you are aware of where your belongings are at all times. And what if the previous renter of the Pod had bedbugs? Totally possible....
