My daughter has had a cough, runny nose, and this rattling when she breaths for like 2 months now. i have taken her to the doctor 4 times now. The last time that we went was earlier this week cause her cold caused her to get an ear ache(which shes over the ear ache now). The doctor tells me to just use saline drops and suck out her nose and to also use a vicks vaperisor. ITS NOT HELPING!!!! The doctor says that since shes only 5 months old i cant give her anything :( .... I also talked to one of my friends that has a 3 month old and she said that the doctor tested him for RSV. My doctor has never tested Kylie for that ... Is this a test that should be done or not?!?!?! I need some advice on what i can do to make my lil one feel better! Also if you think i should find another doctor or if im just freaking out????

What can I do next?

I know doctors don't always give us the answers we want to hear. My daughter was sick for over 3 months when she was little with the same symptoms. The only thing that really helped her was the Winter ending. She continued to have issues off an on after that with runny nose, coughing, and ears aches until we had tubes put in that helped. They did that after about 4 ear infections.

It is frustrating when you can't get them well, but if the doctor was concerned about RSV I believe they would run a test.

Hang in there.

L., at a minimum, I would call your doctor's office and ask about an RSV test and tell them your concern about her not getting better. If they do not answer your question about the RSV test in a way that you understand and are satisfied with, it's time to get a new doctor. Good luck - I hope she feels better soon!!!

Hi L.,
I'm so sorry to hear about your baby being sick. I know how frustrating that must be for you. You said that your friend has their baby checked for RSV and I think that would be a great idea for you to have done for your baby. When you first started describing her symptoms the first thing I thought of was RSV. It's worth a shot to see. You might want to consider using your friends doctor also. I wish you the best and I hope your sweet baby gets well.

It wouldn't hurt to get an RSV test. My son had RSV last year and unfortunately it is a virus that has to run its course. My son was put on breathing treatments which helped tremendously. The RSV does make babies very sick though. My son wouldn't eat or drink anything and anything he did would come right back up. They actually had to give him an IV for dehydration. It certainly wouldn't hurt to talk to your doctor more about it especially since she isn't getting better.

My son was sick what seemed like the first year of his life because of daycare. He is 2 years old now and hardly (knock on wood) gets sick now. Their little immune systems just have to get adjusted to all of the germs in the area. Good luck. I know how frustrating it can be to have a sick one that doesn't seem to get better.

Hello L.,

definitely get her checked for RSV and keep knoking on doors until you get an answer. if you're breastfeeding... watch what you're eating. skip milk products for a couple of weeks. also if she's on formula... regular formula has cow milk which can give her more phlem/mucus see if she needs new formula.

do you use air fresheners/candles...don't use those for a while and see if there is any improvement. make sure she's not allergic to cleaning agents/ air fresheners, etc.

Little ones will ususally run a fever with RSV so if she is you might consider that. Unfortunately, though there is no majic drug for this virus. Just the stuff you are already doing. What about an allergy? Milk or any new foods? I know how hard it is when your little ones are sick. I hope she feels better very soon...like today!!

I would definitly talk to the dr. again and if they arent willing to do anything ...than i would suggest a different dr.
My son has asthma and allergies and he always has....they can get your baby a nebulizer with albuterol to help open her airways and loosen the gunk up. so dont let them tell you they cant give her anything...its better to be safe than sorry!!

L.,

I have a son who is now 2 and the symptoms that you described he has had since he was born. What I have found that works best is: the saline solution DOES help with their breathing and clearing up any not needed runny noses, also having a vaporizer helps keep moisture in the air which prevents her nasal cavity from getting too dry. Some over the counter drugs that help are the little noses pediatrics. Some meds that were recalled were mainly recalled because parents were overdosing their kids, never give more than the recommended dosage. My mother has been a nurse for over 25 years and even with the recall she would tell me which drugs to give and how much and how often. A very good drug is Rondec or Ceron is it's other name. My son was given 1/4 tsp every four hours, it helps clear up his drainage. But it's a prescription drug. I've never paid over $10 for it. But yes it will pass, just give it time. And if you don't like your doctor, there are others or go to a clinic, they usually guarantee something prescribe that will make you feel better. And they check for most everything without being asked. We just go to our doctor for well checks, because every other time they tell us "its viral" and that they can't do anything for it. Hope this helps!

Hi L.,

My son is 4 months old now but when he was 3 months old he devloped bronchialitis and it seemed like it NEVER went away. For weeks his breathing was rattled and he had a horrible cough. He was negative for RSV and pneumonia. Our Pedi finally put him on breathing treatments using a nebulizer. Within a week we noticed such a huge difference and it all cleared up right away. Ask your Pedi about this option. You'll have to pay for most of the nebulizer out of your pocket but they deliver it to your house and it works wonders! Your baby won't be a huge fan of it but it helps them a great deal. I highly recommend asking about the breathing treatments. We were told to continuously use saline drops as well and it never helped a bit.

Good luck, I hope your little girl gets to feeling better VERY soon!

I recommend you seeing another dr. If they can give our baby shots every few months for this and for that then I think they could do something for a cold. I do not know what rsv is so I can not comment on that but you might think about the breathing treatments. I know they would do that for a baby with pneumonia so it cant hurt them. Good luck
