Hello,

My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for a while now but instead of a regular doctor I'd like to see a gynocologist that can help with navigating options. We also need to find someone that is reasonable and will let us pay out of pocket since we don't currently have health insurance. Any recommendations/suggestions? Thanks for your time!

Hi J.-
Regarding the insurance issue- if you'd like some free help, I can offer my services. I am a health insurance broker and work out of my home in Glenview. All Kids is great if you qualify. I believe the income limits are shown online. If you don't qualify (or even if you do!) let me know. I can help you shop all the major health insurance companies to find good coverage, whether it is just for you, the kids, or the whole family. You need something, just in case. If you'd like me to run some info for you, please let me know. It doesn't cost anything to shop, nor to apply. I'd love to help if I can.

J., I don't have a doctor to mention to you but I went without insurance for an extremely long time. I ended up getting insurance last year at a job thank goodness and within a couple of weeks my son was admitted to the hospital and I myself wound up with uterine cancer and had a hysterectomy about five weeks ago. If you can purchase even a cheap discount plan, such as Ameriplan which is not insurance but discounts or check out assurant health or call some of the insurance companies so you will not get hit financially in the event of an emergency. My son's hospitalization was 24,000 for a week and then aftercare and mine was 25,000 for a three hour operation that thankfully removed my uterus and cancer hopefully forever. That is almost #50,000.00! I urge you to check this out. I am sure you are healthy, as I was all these years and you will have a healthy baby, but on the off chance something could happen, cover yourself. Call the STate and ask for Allkids. They cover pregnant women and if your incomes are good they let you do something with premiums (they didn't let us but they did cover my son). This is serious. I didn't used to think so. I am now sitting here with a pile of papers all over my house and still owe about 1500 dollars on these. Which is also hard to come by. Good luck to you! You should be able to have a baby without worrying about all this insurance stuff but we do not live in that kind of world.

I don't know docs in that area but the book "taking charge of your fertility" is excellent and you can likely get it from your library. It will allow you to work out what is going on with your cycle so that you go with more info than you would have had otherwise. good luck.

Try Dr Scarimbolo from Northwest OBy in Park Ridge, they are very helpful and might be able to let you pay out of pocket! I've been going there for few years and very happy with their service! Good luck!

Hi J.:

I would really recommend trying to find insurance BEFORE you get pregnant. First of all some insurance companies don't cover a pregancy until you have been insured for a certain period of time. Additionally, my totally normal vaginal delivery costs $10,000. If you were to have an emergency c section it can cost you $25,000-$30,000 and if your baby were to need NICU care it can cost thousands of dollars A DAY. This does not even include prenatal visits, ultrasounds or well child visits. Please consider this as you make your decison as this is the type of thing that can cause people to file for bankrupty at a time when all you should be doing in enjoying your new baby.

J.,
I would contact Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge (next door to Des Plaines) and get names of their gynocologists. This hospital has a very good reputation as well as doctors; On the top ten list of the country; Very good OB's and specialists (I had Dr. Pesch, OB)and Dr. Iannca (a high risk specialist). Dr. Pesch was reffered to me by Lutheran's renowned doctor, Dr. March, family practitioner, office in Arlington Hts. you could start there. Some offices are on the premises, so I only had to go to one place for my appointments. I got pregnant at age 40 for the first time. Since that's a high risk pregnancy (over 35 y.o.) Dr. Pesch referred me to Dr. Iannca. You would be in a good environment for referrals, I'm sure they have fertility specialists as well etc., Your gynocologist will give you a referral. In my opinion you would be in good hands. I am now 43. Gave birth at Lutheran on 7/17/2007 to a healthy baby boy with no complications (my miracle baby). Ofcourse, it's your call, but maybe you can do some research on it. If it satisfies your needs than go for it. My two year old is doing very well and reaching his milestones (even the tantrums one)lol. Oh, and they have a financial office to process your applications for financial aid. Do get All Kids and FamilyCare insurance (very reasonable and on a sliding scale their direct (#1-877-204-1012). The hospital can file for you. They worked with me on the financial situation after I got home. We had very good communication. As for the doctors, you would need to contact their office staff and find out their billing process.
Good luck to you, if you need further info feel free to message me.
Bernie
