There are so many dogs in need of homes and this is a good place to start looking. Whatever you do, please don't buy a dog from a pet store. Those dogs come from puppy mills.

I was the proud mama to a wonderfull Mini Schnauzer. They are great dogs but they are a terrier and can be difficult to train because they are very intellegent and are pretty much a one person dog. They are prone to several chronic conditions such as pancrititis- high blood fat that can cause vomiting, diahrea (sp) and will require a special diet, my Daisy suffered from this from the time she was a puppy, this ment low/no fat foods, absolutly no human food. They are also prone to epilepsey- this eventually was fatal for my baby, eye disease, allergies. Also the grooming can be very expensive as they do not shed and need to be brushd daily and clipped about once a month to maintain healthy skin and coats. I am not trying to discourage you from the breed I would love another Schanuzer but you really need to research. Terriers are notorious for being territorial of their people and this can lead to behavior issues as well. If you are really serious please check out www.akc.org this is the American Kennel Club, not only will you get all the info you need about certian breeds but they have a list of reputable, RESPONSIBLE breeders on their site. Should you decide this is the dog for you and your family please visit the breeder, see the parents and spend time with the puppies. A good breeder will be able to also give you a health certificate for the puppy but some of the genetic issues may not be present in a puppies pedigree- Daisy's epilepsy was not.
Good luck.

I would look at rescues. Take your daughter to a shelter or rescue and see what they have there. They have tons and she will get to pick out what she wants!

I agree with Bobbi, check out a shelter or petfinder. Or, you can possibly a schnauzer rescue if you are adamant on the breed. Some excellent information on keeping this breed well socialized and trainable:

You can have mine...just kidding. ;)
I think.
She (the dog) loves her children too much (and she was here long before they were).
And she doesn't bother my allergies.
Happy hunting! :)
