Hi! We are planning for our 2nd baby in a couple months and will not be able to use our previous OB because we switched our insurances over to my husband's. We are under Preferred One and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a great OB. Also if anyone has any feedback on Fairview Riverside (U campus) hospital in delivery since we will have to go there for our next baby....I delivered our first at St John's and LOVED their birthing center but we will only be covered through Fairview hospitals now :( Thanks for any suggestions!!!

Fairview Riverside Women's Clinic-###-###-####. They have OB/GYN doctors and midwives, they are all wonderful. Fairview Riverside is a great hospital, I delivered 2 of my children there and received WONDERFUL service. I wouldn't want to go anywhere else

I had my son at Fairview Riverside at the U and have mixed feelings about it. The labor and delivery were great, but the after care wasn't that great. I had one great nurse afterwards, but the rest were unattentive and slow. They would lose things (forms I'd filled out) and forget to respond to requests. The rooms are nice and I think it would have been great had I had a few better nurses.

I have the best OB at Fairview Lakes in Wyoming, MN. It is straight North on 35W.. it isn't as far as it seems. I go there and I live in White Bear Lake.

He prefers to induce labor rather than let anyone go way overdue.. because being long overdue is more stressful to the baby. He also takes the time to talk to you to address all your concerns. I never felt like I was being rushed out of there. He delivers about 99% of his patient's babies. I think all the labor and delivery rooms/recovery rooms are private. You can tell he truely cares about his patients and their babies. (The staff is also very nice!)

--If you do go to Fairview lakes, my favorite pediatrician (in the same building) is Dr. Mani Mokalla. He is very thorough and informative.. and also takes time to ask mom questions about nursing/ mothering and even made faces and talked to my baby.--

If you go there, write back and let me know what you think!

I would follow the previous poster and go to HealthEast rather than Fairview if you can. I've had HORRIBLE experiences every time I've been to a Fairview Hospital. My sister-in-law delivered at Fairview Riverside and wasn't seen for 6 hours after she delivered her son. No one assisted her in nursing and she ended up not being able to nurse at all.

I delivered at United Hospital in St. Paul and will be going back there for my next child. I had the best nurses in the world and everything went SO smoothly because they were there for us the entire time I was in labor.

Good luck in your search and sorry to be a downer! :(

Hi J. - Our family also has Preferred One insurance. I delivered my first son at Abbott Northwestern in Mpls and had a GREAT experience. My son was 7 weeks early and I felt like both of us were in good hands the entire time we were there. I see Dr. MaryAnn Jacob at Diamond Women's Center in Edina - I couldn't be happier with her! (I am 29 weeks with baby #2)Both are covered by our Preferred One insurance and were recommended by close friends that we could trust.

Hi J., You can't go wrong with the Fairview Riverside Womens Clinic. They have MDs and CNMs there who all give great OB care. (I have personally gone with the midwives twice and haven't had any problems.) I actually work in the birthplace at Fairview (you'll deliver on the Riverside campus though, the U campus doesn't have L&D) so of course I think it's great ;) If you have any specific questions I would be happy to answer them. I've delivered both of my children there as well, once before I worked there and once while I worked there. Both were great experiences.

I used the midwives at Healtheast and loved them. I delivered at St. Joseph's in St. Paul & LOVEDDDD it! The nurses were awesome and very attentive. I have preferred one insurance and all was covered at Healtheast & St. Joe's. I highly recommend the Midwives at Healtheast & St. Joseph's. Good luck!

I delivered our first child at Riverside last October and I thought that the care was, for the most part, fabulous. During labor the nurses were good at telling myself, my husband and my mom what was happening and were very receptive to my wishes as far as using medications and how I wanted to proceed with labor. Sadly, we did end up needing an emergency c-section (cord was wrapped around his neck twice) but the staff continued to talk us through everything while still moving quickly. On top of needing a c-section, our son needed to spend some time in the NICU due to a small pneumothorax...which was difficult because post partum and NICU are on different floors. The nurses were more than happy to wheel me down a floor for visits at all hours if my husband was already in the NICU. I probably had a slightly different experience than most new mothers because I was also a third year medical student at the time and was able to sit in on morning rounds in the NICU when they discussed my son's care. I was also very aggressive about breast feeding from the beginning and the nursing staff was wonderful about this...they respected my wish to not give my son formula initially and worked with me when we needed to supplement his diet while in the NICU while my milk came in. I asked for a breast pump within an hour of delivery when it became apparent that I would not be able to breast feed right away and the lactation consultants were a lifesaver. I had one nurse that was a little on the slow side as far as responding to my needs...but the other nurses I had over the five days I was a patient more than made up for it. I actually had three different nurses that came down to the NICU to bring me my pain medications when I was spending time with my son...I was very impressed with the quality of care and would deliver again with our next. My only recommendation is that if you have preferences, make them known! The nurses always seemed more than happy to work with me but unless I asked for something then it may or may not have happened.

I used Fairview Uptown for my OB. Dr. Pamela Noll is fabulous (specializes in family medicine with emphasis on women's health/OB) as is Dr. Christine Wesley (family medicine with emphasis in women's health...if I remember correctly, she also has additional training in higher risk deliveries). As with most clinics, you will probably have whoever is on call the day that you deliver...of the 8 doctors at the uptown clinic, I have personal experience with 5 of them and would trust any of them to be my doctor.

Best of luck with your delivery!

I delivered at Fairview Riverside in May. Overall the experience was great. My midwife was wonderful (John Eads) and so are all the other midwives at Fairview Riverside Women's Clinic. The nurses were very attentive to me my first night, but the care seemed to dwindle the second day. I did get a lot of help with breast-feeding and they helped me feed my son with my pumped colostrum. They never pressured me to use formula, pacifiers (although I'm not opposed to those), or medication during labor unless I asked for it. I think the rooms leave a bit to be desired when compared to other hospitals, but most people are only there a couple days with any luck. I hope I've helped. Good luck with your second pregnancy!

Hi J.,

I delivered at Fairview Riverside and went to the women's clinic which is in another adjacent building. If you want, try Dr. J. Yungerberg for an OB, since you'll be delivering at Fairview. She is really nice and was recommended to me be a couple different people. I did have an emergency C-section with my daughter, so I'm not quite sure about the birthing rooms/experience etc. But, the nurses that took care of us post-partum were really great. We were there for five days because my daughter was jaundiced. I'm sure they would give you a tour of the birthing center if you are interested, because they offer birthing classes at the hospital and maybe you could just tag along with one of the class tours without having to take the classes. I'm not sure how other hospitals operate, but I think you deliver with whichever OB is on-call at the hospital. I hope this has been somewhat helpful for you. Congratulations and best wishes to you and your family!
