Hello, my name is J., For my sons secon B-day we did:
1. Paint rocks {the kids LOVED it}
2. I let them decorate their own cupcakes.
3. we also blew up some balloons and had a contest to see in 10 seconds who could get the most... It was a riot.

The ages on the kids 1-14, It was fun for everyone...

Hi T.,

I did Winnie the Pooh for my sons 1st birthday and he loved it! I also had a barbeque for the adults. It was a quick and easy cleanup. I hope that this helps!

I was looking on the internet for my own son and saw the theme of "ball"- which is such a loved item at that age! the ideas that went along with it were:
* buy one of those huge plastic balls from wal-mart (cost about $2 or so) for each kid that attends. Not only will this serve as entertainment, but also as take home favors.
* make a round cake and use white icing and red piping to make a baseball
* for invitations, cut out circles and write something to the effect of "let's Have a Ball"

My son (3rd child) will also be turning 1 in the second half of October. We'll probably go the BBQ route as well. Cake, ice cream... we have a mini-bounce house that we got from one of the large discount store chains as well as a bunch of backyard toys. We may go the Elmo route since DS seems to gravitate towards that character right now.

Just an idea - my husband is just kicking off his own business doing custom photos for people and he also does banners. He did one for a birthday, where the theme was Nascar and it ended up being so nice the parents have it permanently displayed in the boys bedroom. So if you may be interested, his number is ###-###-####. His name is Colin. The pricing depends upon the amount of work involved and the idea, but on average would probably be $100 - $200. Just a thought - good luck.

Just have a simple cake and ice cream party but add a theme to it, like dinosaurs or something he might like.

Hi T.. I'm also planning my son's first birthday Party and I don't have that much money to spend. So I decided to go to Costco and buy some appetizers and I will just make a cake just for the baby.I will give some gift bags with candy and thank you cards and for the party theme It will be Jungle animals or something like that or maybe a costume party. Halloween is really close, we will probably dance the chicken dance, macarena and have a tiny pinata. Something simple that will make awesome memories.

My son isn't 1 yet, but my friend did something really cute with giving her son a piece of cake and letting him tear into it on his own. It was so cute. Most of the cake didn't make it into his mouth! She put down some newspaper underneath his high chair and gave him a bath afterwards.

All the responses are great. I would just keep in mind, nap time and feeding time when planning your party. My son just turned one and I had the party from 1 - 3pm. Right after nap and lunch time, therefore he won't be fussy or hungary. I also did jungle animal theme at my home. Lots of balloons and streamers and cake. Nothing to expensive. And didn't plan the party to long, so he didn't get over stimulated with all the people. Good luck and Happy 1st Birthday !

Hi T.,

My husband and I made our decision based on how WE wanted to remember the day. We knew our boy wouldn't remember his first birthday so we thought about what kind of experience we would like our boy to have.
We chose no party but a quality family gathering at a park completely focused on him and his exploring. It became a day of him leading us around to all that he wanted to do.
We had such a wonderful time witnessing his glee to freely explore and it made for a glorious and memorable family bonding experience.
Once the day was done we felt such pride in ourselves for taking the time to create a special memory without the hustle and bustle of pleasing everyone else but our own child. Plus the only money we spent was on picnic items and gas.

Best wishes and happy Birth day to you too. Without you, there would be no day to celebrate.

My sons first bday was a teddybear picnic his was in March. My daughter had a ladybug party and everyone wore anntena or red shirts. Hers was in October. They have great stuff at the dollar stores. I usually buy plain colored cups and put stickers on them. I make all my own cakes to go with the theme by looking on line. brightideas.com have some great ideas.
