I'm looking for a good place (preferably in the White Rock area)to leave our sweet 2 yr.old lab for 5 days next month. She is not used to being around other dogs and has never learned to walk on a leash (not that I wouldn't be thrilled if someone could teach her!)I've checked out Kinder Critter, and they look wonderful, but charge $28/day, which seems a bit high...can anyone recommend a kennel I can trust who is a bit less $$$?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow!! Thanks to all of you for all the great responses. Several recommended Happy Tails, which is close by, so I will check them out. Nice to know there's so many helpful neighbors out there!

A dog sitter is a great option, and I've got an awesome referral. Try Ann Hicks at ###-###-#### or ____@____.com luck!

There is a wonderful place on NWHwy and Ferndale/Easton - just west of the intersection (not the vet clinic). I have not used them for several years but my dogs were so happy there. They charge by the size of the dog and you provide the food. The only thing I am not sure about is they have an open dog run - large dogs together and small dogs together.....there is someone there all the time and they take calls asking how your furbaby is doing......good luck finding a place.

We love Dee's Doggie Den (www.deesdoggieden.com ###-###-####) at the SE corner of Mockingbird and Abrams (near the Albertson's). They have open play during the day, so that may not work for your dog if she isn't used to other dogs, but you should check with them because they might have other options for your dog. The owner's name is Dee (obviously) and she is great. Try to talk to her if she is in when you call. We have been taking our two dogs there for many years and really love it there.

Hi M., one more for you. We take ours to East Lake Veterinary Hospital at Ferndale and NW highway. Yes, we go there for care but we also use them for boarding and grooming. They're wonderful! You should see their outdoor area. K.

The place on Northwest Hwy & Ferndale(?) that was already mentioned, is called Happy Tails if I remember correctly. It is a very nice place and well set up for all kinds of dogs. I know the owner and she's a huge dog lover!!! I would definately trust them with my dogs.

I don't know if you have considered it, but we use Society Pet Sitter (www.societypetsitter.com). They charge $17 a visit and will get your mail, walk your dog, play, etc. and they come to your house. Our dogs don't do well in kennels, so we do this instead!

Both East Lake and Happy Tails are on NW Highway at Ferndale. Both are good. Check them out.

I've heard Dee's Doggie Den off of Mockingbird and Skillman is good. They have an outside area where I believe they allow the dogs to run/roam for a good portion of the day if you want.

I have clients for whom I pet sit on a regular basis, and by all means, see if you can find someone to come to your home to care of your pup. He will much happier, and probably sleep most of the time anyway, lol. Depending on where near White Rock Lake you live, and when you will be gone, I would be available. I charge $15 per visit and take care of mail, newspaper, etc. However, I don't believe two visits a day are sufficient, unless you have a doggy door. If you must kennel the dog, I would not use the facility previously mentioned. I believe it is way understaffed and dogs do not get outside. Feel free to call me if you have questions. I know it can be a predicament.

I love, love, love all my little charges and I can provide plenty of references. (Usually I stay at the house with the pets-- and actually "sit" everything.) I am also a licensed Real Estate Broker.
