Hi Moms!
There have been quite a few home burglaries in our town in the past few weeks and months and we are thinking very seriously about getting a home security system. Please tell me what companies you suggest and any insight you may have into this type of business. I am just learning and need all the help I can get. Thanks a TON in advance!

Keep those responses coming and thanks!

Another reason I am thinking about a security system is to put my 7 yr olds mind at ease. I have a worrier on my hands and couldn't imagine the devastation, fear, and worry she would have if we came home to our home broken into.

What can I do next?

Our home already had an ADT system in place. We pay about $40/month. Keep in mind that you have to have a land line with a security system. I think you can get varying levels of security; of course, you'll also pay more. For example, you can determine if you want the alarm to activate when the window of your doors are broken versus any window on the basement or first level. Even if someone came through the window, the motion detectors in your house would turn on the alarm.

Alarms are a good deterrent, but we were told by a police officer that some burglars just move quickly through a home and know that they have X amount of time before the police are called by the security company. Be consistent about setting the alarm, too! It's very easy to fall into a pattern of not using it, particularly when you're coming home with kids and arms full of groceries, etc.

We use a local company here in our area of Kansas City. I admit I have no experience with a large national company, but it's nice to know exactly who we are dealing with and I've seen the same 2 guys over last 11 years. We've never had any problems.

Our home already had a system, but they were not using it. So when we bought, we just had them update it and they do the monitoring. We pay $60 for 3 months for monitoring.

We use Smith Thompson. Not sure if it's in your area. $16.95 a month, no land line needed. Works like a cell phone, so no worries if power or phone lines go down. No problems so far...

Well I work for ADT, so
1. No you dont need a land line, you can have a radio option, wich does kind of work like a cell phone. And it doesnt cost more, same price.
2. We have this thing called 2-way, to where we can talk to you directly through your oanel, kind of like a intercom almost.
3. we have pulse, and thats the new one, you get the apps, on your phone and things, and you can control your system from anywhere (obviously most expensive)
4. You dont have to go directly through us, you can have your services installed by an authorized dealer, and thats who you will make your paymens through, but you will have service to us.

We have had ADT in our home for the 4 years we have lived there. It was one of the first things we had put in when we moved in. No complaints and always fast service.

Once I was 20 minutes away and the alarm went off so I had the cops go and I went as well, but nothing.

Another time we were 4 hours away and our FRONT DOOR opened...umm, YES SEND THE COPS!! Turns out the wind was so strong that it got the door open. The lock must not have been 100% locked, but I thank God for us setting the alarm that day so we knew our door was open. We were gone for a few days!

We pay $120 every 3 months for our service...but I want to upgrade to Pulse soon and that is a little bit more.

We've had ADT for 5 years and have been pleased. They installed our system, too. We pay almost $50/month, but the piece of mind is worth every penny!
