Seasonal Birth Control Pills Causing Depression?

I am wondering if any of you have suffered depression, anxiety, anger, or any other mood issues while taking Seasonale. I have been on it for 3 1/2 weeks and considered checking myself in to the hospital for depression. I have been so anxious and get angry very easily. I honestly thought I was going crazy until I looked online and found at least 2 other women who have had this problem while on that specific pill. I did call my OBGYN and will begin a new pill on Saturday. I just wondered if anyone else had taken it and felt they were losing their minds as well. I have never felt so horribly depressed and hopeless. Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience in case any one else is suddenly feeling sad without cause. If so, see if your birth control pill is the culprit! Wishing you all peace, love, and no mood swings! :)

I don't know anything about that specific birth control pill but hormones absolutely can cause Depression. Call your Doctor and discuss it with him/her. Best of Luck to you.

Hi L.,

I am not on that type of BC now but I almost started. Just wanted to give you a suggestion. If you decide to take a different BC the Nuvaring is wonderful. I am on it now and it is better then any pill I had taken before. Once in, once out, you don't have to remember to take it everymorning and it even comes with reminder stickers of when you put it in and when you take it out. I refuse to go back to any pill or shot. Just wanted to let you know that pills aren't your only option. Good luck and I hope the mood swings and depression get better for you.

I have never been on that specific birth control pill, but others that have done the same. I also know many other women who have this problem. I opted for natural methods of birth control i.e. charting....when done properly can be more effective. Other friends switched to different types until they found one that didn't have such a severe reaction. It is pretty common. Good luck to you!

Hello! While I was on the Seasonale, I noticed my first emotional outbreak was within the first 4 weeks, afterwards, (2 months later) I felt better. Unfortunately, I had to stop taking it because I was bleeding for 6 weeks at a time. I think that pill is only for a select few. And beware when you go to pick it up at the pharmacy! It was 120.00 when I was using it! Good luck.

Seasonale has really high doses of hormone. Hormones are what control and regulate your moods. When off balance, you can get results from depression to psychosis.
The doctors seem to skim over that fact when handing out the pill.
You may want to consider barrier methods of birth control or other non hormonals.

I had horrible depression when I was on birth control pills. I finally just went off them and felt a lot better. Some pills may be better than others but overall- b.c. pills are not good for you in the long run. Good luck- L. M.

L.,
I did not take seasonale but, I did have issues with depression while taking other birth control pills. I finally found a low dose pill that did not cause depression. I have tried alesse and nordette they both worked well, I currently am on nuvaring and so far I have had no signs of depression.

I have been using Seasonale since about February. I was having SERIOUS PMS with my last pill, and I was worried that it was PMDD. I didn't want to go the route of antidepressants, so my doctor suggested Seasonale. If nothing less, I would only have PMS four times a year rather than every month. Anyway, I've had no trouble with it, and I've had very little PMS with it. During the first 3-month cycle I had some break-through bleeding, but I haven't any since then. I know it can take a couple of months for your body to get regulated on a pill like this, so hopefully your depression will subside over time. Definitely talk to your doctor about it, though.

Good luck to you. I know how frustrating it is to feel out of control of your own mood.
