Seasonal Allergy Relief Needed!!!

Hi moms! Is anyone else experiencing worse-than-usual allergy symptoms this Sring, and later/longer than normal? Every Spring I have a handful of "attacks" where my eyes start itching terribly. This Spring it has been non-stop for the last 4-5 weeks. Usually by mid-May or June I am fine though... Nothing has changed in my living situation. I know I should be thankful that my only symptom is itchy eyes, but this itching is driving me insane!!! CONSTANT itching that feels like there is poison ivy under my eye lids and behind my eyes. I had two days of relief a few days ago and that is it...boy was that heaven! I am currently taking 10 mg of Zyrtec per day, Flonase, and Optivar eye drops daily as a preventative. I have also tried Patanol and Pataday brand eye drops and everything OTC. I try not to be outside if I can help it and use cold packs to calm and sooth when I can. I visited the doctor last week and they added an antihistamine nasal spray to that list that I'm taking daily. My question is does anyone have any thoughts on what else I can take or can do for this? Not to throw a wrench into things, but I have considered getting a cortizone shot and they said they would do that only as a last resort (I am about there...I am in pure agony...) but I am still nursing a 15 month old and not willing to give that up. I don't know if I can take cortizone while nursing. Any thoughts out there? HELP!!!

What can I do next?

Here's hope and help!
I know what you're talking about, b/c I watched my parents go thru this growing up...until 6 years ago.
My mom used to eat allergy meds/antihistimines like candy, couldnt' go outside or be in the car w/ the windows down, etc. HOWEVER, she found a food-science company 6 years ago that has patented products that she began taking for other health issues that she was suffering with and she was utterly shocked when she'd been taking them for a few months when may allergy season came around and everyone else was suffering but her! Still, 6 yrs later, she's taken only like 7 antihistimines, and her allergies are 90% better. I'm so glad b/c it was miserable for her, and to be around her ;0) Thousands of others have had these same results as she has, and I'd be happy to hook you up with some of them so you can ask questions and get some hope.
I've been taking the same products for 6 years and took them as my prenatals 2x with awesome results, and while I breastfed both kids for 1 year each. They are 100% safe, no warning labels, and are actually HEALTHY :0)
Send me a personal message to schedule a time to talk more...30 day money back guarantee and no health risks (forego the cortizone!)

Hi A.,
I have allergies and asthma and at one point I went to the doctor three times in one month. The last time I went in, I told him that if he didn't do something, I was going to gouge my eyes out. He put me on Patanol. I was already on Zyrtec and adding the Patanol did the trick. I know that if I stay indoors and use the air that it helps, but I am always outside and needed something that worked. I hate taking pills, but I hate using my inhaler and relentless itching more. Good Luck! C.

Hi, A..

It's quite a year for allergies for me too. I have allergy induce asthma, so my rescue inhaler has been a must.

As for my eyes, I've always had rather dry, shot eyes anyway. I don't know if it will help you, but I found that dry eyes are more prone to irritation, including allergens in the air. I was using patanol and lubrication drops as much as allowed by the doc, but I was going nuts! I got pink eye often, fans were , and I was even resorting to baby shampoo even though it didn't clean my oily hair well.

Anyway, my eye doctor strongly suggested that I try a dietary change, and I thought. "Well, if it won't hurt, why not?" He said that 1000 mg of fish oil and 1000 mg of flax seed oil should help a lot. He said that it might smooth out my digestion also, so I might want to cut back; but the oils should help my body lubricate the eyes. That was two years ago. My OTC Visine expired before I finished it.

Maybe you could try it.

What works for my husband, is local honey. I don't know how but then I don't know how Zrtec works either. The pollen from the LOCAL honey is supposed to help with the allergies but it has to be local and even better if it is the latest batch so the bees were "using" the same pollen that is bugging you. My husband's head used to implode every allergy season. Farmer's markets are a good place to start to find some.

Hi A.,

Sorry you are itchy!

I too have heard the local honey idea. I think it is supposed to work because you are ingesting the same pollens that trouble you, albeit in a weakened, "processed" form (the bees made those pollens into honey). It's kind of like giving yourself an allergy shot, minus the needle, of the substance that bothers you. Plus it tastes good!

Re taking the cortizone while nursing--contact La Leche League to see if they have info on any studies that have been done. they have a lot of info on which meds are ok when nursing. It's great you are wanting to continue !! :-)

You can call 1-800 LA LECHE or look for their website (sorry, don't know the web address).

Good luck!

I would say go for the cortisone shot - it has really helped me in the past. As for nursing, I had to take prednisone pills (same as cortisone) while pregnant, so I would think nursing would be ok. I'd love to hear how the local honey helped though. Where would you buy it?

This is me too!! The doctor told me that the tree pollen is higher than normal and is affecting a lot more people than usual. But for me (with your same symptoms), I am experiencing these symptoms longer and more powerful than they have been in the past. Once you close your windows and turn on the air conditioning, then you should be ok.

Try finding some local honey and take one teaspoon a day, you can put in it hot tea to make easier to take. It MUST be local honey. The bees use local pollin to make the honey and the idea is that after about a week of daily doses of honey your body will adjust to the pollins. My aunt was taking cortisone shots without a lot of relief and last year I suggested local honey to her-now she is off the shots and feeling better than she has in years!
I hope this helps you, it is a non drug solution so you could continue to breastfeed
Good luck!

Dear Amnada,
My son goes to a chiropractor that deals in nutrition. My son take Standard Process's Allerplex. He takes up to 10 pills a day during allergy season. Only then is he not affected by it. These suppliments are just like taking food so they will not affect the baby. L. J

I have struggled with allergies for over 25 years. I've done everything from weekly allergy shots to prescription medications (most of which have negative side effects) and over the counter allergy remedies. For the past 3 1/2 years I have been taking Proflavanol 90 (a potent antioxidant) from USANA Health Sciences and have found that to be the ONE and ONLY daily relief from my annoying allergies. And the best part is, there are no negative side effects...I'm not walking around with major medicine head and exhausted. You probably know what I mean...:)

Anyway, I hope you find something that will work for you too!!!

I find it hard to believe you are taking all of these over the counter remedy's and still nursing your child. Most OTC say you should not take if you are pregnant or nursing, so maybe you should visit a health / natural food/ herb shop and talk to a professional about your allergy problems.

I work with a health & wellness company. They manufacture an allergy relief product that is completely natural and you wouldn't have to worry about it affecting your child. Let me know if you would like more info.
