Scrapbooking Question - Missouri City,TX

Okay...this is going to sound like a strange question, but here goes. I am finally getting around to starting my kids' baby books (my oldest is 4!) and I wanted to see what some other scrapbookers think of this idea. I had kept my pregnancy testing sticks with both of my kids, so I was thinking of including them in their scrapbooks to show the beginning of the journey, but didn't know if people thought that was weird or even unsanitary. The caps are on them and they would be in the plastic in the books, but I just don't want people to look through my kids' baby books and be grossed out or turned off on the first page! What do you think? Have any of you included the preggo tests in your kids' books? It was just an idea I had and wanted some input before I actually make a page with them.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your input! I guess the concensus is that I should take a picture of it and include that instead of the stick. While I don't necessarily think it's gross since it is contained, I do agree that it could mess up the book over time and it is probably a little bulky to include it without bending the pages around it. So, a picture it is! Thanks again for your thoughts. I'm really looking forward to getting started on the book now. :-)

I would take a close up shot of someone (your and/or husband? grandma?) holding the pregnancy stick and smiling big.....put the picture in your album, not the stick.
I bought the kind that ejects, so the stick flushes away and the part you hold says "pregnant" or "not pregnant" hoping to keep those, but the words go away after awhile. :(

I think that seems a little gross since baby books are something that are kept forever. Who knows what the sticks would be like in 100 years from now. Do your grandchildren really want to keep a stick that has your urine on it? Just take a picture of them!

Definitely take a photo. You don't know how the stick is going to hold up over time....it would suck if the acid in the urine dissolved your baggie and ruined your books, KWIM?

most scrapebooks are bulky, and this make more so. Just take a snapshot of the test strips and put them in the book.

Why not take a picture of them in your hand and then you can put the picture in the almum and not gross out your friends and family. I now wish I would have taken a photo of this too.. what a great start to journaling the story, because that is how you find out for sure right! Good luck with your albums. :)

I don't think it is gross or unsanitary at all. And I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who kept the pregnancy testing sticks! However, for the scrapbook I would take a photo of the stick to make it easier to fit in the book. Then keep your sticks in a memory box!
Have fun scrapbooking!

I never (or rarely, anyway) put anything in my scrapbooks that isn't acid-free and photo-safe. The best thing to do would be to either take pictures of the sticks, or get a clear, archival envelope to put them in and affix that to the pages. There are companies that make these specifically for scrapbooks -- you might google "archival scrapbooking envelope" or "archival scrapbooking memorabilia envelope" to see what you get, or check with your local scrapbooking stores to see what they might have or know of. Personally I would just go for the photograph option, and keep the sticks in a special "keepsake box".

I do have mine but only for my scrapbook of my pregnancy losses. They are sealed in clear plastic and then put on the pages. Since my son died at 40 weeks and a day and I lost twins 9 months later, I felt they were too precious to toss but I also don't have a lot of people looking at that book. I really don't think it's gross at all, but I made sure that they were sealed up well and I don't have them in my other baby books

Hi V., What about taking a picture of them instead of placing them in the scrapbook. That is what I did. I wanted to have the memory about when we first found out. You could do a page with the picture and some journaling of what the chain events where, who you told first, what you was feeling, etc. People might be a little grossed out by a pregnancy test, but ultimately it is your scrapbook and should be your choice!

You could take a photo of the pregnancy test and include that in your scrapbook instead of the actual test.

I think its a great way to show the beginning! I included pictures of my pregnancy test... In fact, I was pregnant with twins (which I didn't yet know) and I took two tests, just to make sure. I kept the sticks. Once I found out it was twins, I took a picture of the two tests side by side. I included the pictures only, and threw away the actual sticks. But I think you should do what you want!

As a long time and avid scrapbooker......I suggest taking a close up photo of them. Takes up less space and leaves out any gross out doubt.

I would probably take pictures of them and include them in the book. I would worry about the long term affect on your baby book.

Hi V.~
I am a scrapbooking consultant. I teach scrapbooking classes and sell scrapbooking products for my job. I don't think it is a good idea to scrapbook your pregnancy stick because you want to think long term when you are creating your scrapbooks. Being that a pregnancy stick is not acid free, it will eventually have to be thrown away. I think you should take a picture of the stick and scrap that instead.

Good luck!

I did it with mine. It gave some dimension to the page so I went with it. I put the scrapbook out at my children's 1st birthday parties. Some people laughed but I don't think anyone was grossed out by it. I like the picture idea though!

Sorry. I am with Pam and Denise on this. Putting in the test strip that you peed on is gross!
I would be totally grossed out. His friends, his future girlfriends, his kids are looking to look at that.

I started my baby books with the ultra sound pictures of them.

I didn't read all of the posts. I used the card board box and cut out the sticks that read positive. I took 6 tests the first time I was pregnant (I was in such disbelief) and put them on a two page spread and wrote the date and time and my OMG responses next to each one.

I wouldn't put them in the book simply because they take up so much room and will ruin other pages around them by causing the other pages to bend. It took me 3 books to get through my daughter's first year and that does NOT include the book I did for my pregnancy. I can't imagine having to put the sticks in there too and losing all of that space and worrying about damaging my other pages.

You always want to store your scrapbooks with embellishments up on their ends and not flat.

At least you still have them and can take pictures of them to include in your book. Keep the 3D stuff in a keepsake box.

Hope this helps!!!

I put in in my son's! It's the actual thing, won't it be cool for him/her to see when they are old? LOL, none of my family and friends thought it was weird either, actually 3 of my other scrappin' friends with babies did it too. If you want to do it, do it, just make sure there is nothing special on that page that could get ruined over time from touching the page it's glued too. It's your scrapbook that you will be spending hundreds of hours on, so if you want to, go for it!

I agree with the picture idea but then I read the one that said the actual stick added "depth" to the book and then I had another idea. Like most of my ideas, it is more labor intensive but a blend of the other ideas! You could make a 3-D photo of the stick or make a clay model of the stick then put the picture on it so that it looks like the actual stick but then you have more control over the exact size (depth) that you want to fit on your page!

Good luck!

I say don't do it. It just doesn't seem right. If you want to keep them for your own memories, do so but don't put the sticks in the book. Why not take a pic of the sticks and place it in the book. That would be a lot less awkward for those looking at your book. Just seems like a better alternative

I personally find it a little gross that people keep the pregnancy test or umbilical cord. I wouldn't even want to see a picture of the dried out umbilical cord LOL
From a sanitary point of view, urine is sterile so there's no reason it would be a health hazard.
If my mom gave me a pregnancy test stick she had urinated on, I would get some gloves on and toss it in the trash. That's just a weird thought to me, knowing something in my baby book had my mothers urine on it.
So there's my 2 cents =)

Maybe keep the sticks for your memories only. I like the idea of
taking a picture for the books. There will be other things you may
want to keep out of their books, like their baby teeth (I couldn't
throw them away) and maybe letters to santa. How would you
explain having Santa letters to your grandchildren. I'd keep it
all, but have it separate from memories that everyone would
have access to. Happy collecting.

Maybe u could just photograph them. I tried to keep mine but hubby would have none of it. They are kind of bulky for a book. Besides u can't keep every piece of your kids past as special as it all seems or you would find yourself on an episode of hoarders. Believe me it took everything I had not to save my baby's crusty lil tummy nugget! I probably would have but it came off in the bath and it was all wet and sticky!

I included my positive test....but only in a picture. And it is on the first page of my daughter's book, along with a LONG story about our journey to finally getting preggers. I can't say it would be gross, but a picture would probably be a better way to go :)
