My two year old has been sick since March 1st. He had an ear infection that didn't go away so we were on another round of antibiotics and then he developed an eye infection and then had a 24 hour stomach flu. That all went away and then there was some respitory issues and he was put on a nebulizer with a steroid. He just went back for a recheck today and the doctor is concerned like we are that while these other infections have cleared up...My son continues to be clingy and low energy. The other night he slept from 5:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. The blood work is to check white/red blood count and for anemia but I am worried...Thoughts?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Moms! The doctor called us Saturday morning to let us know test results looked good. Elevation in white blood cell count which would attribute to the symptoms he's having. On antibiotic #3 and a Probiotic in between. He slept a lot this weekend but had some bouts of energy :) The doctor said aside from an apparent infection...results looked great and nothing alarming notable. I am relieved and I appreciate all of your advice and encouragement.

Sounds like something my son had when he was little. He could barely get out of bed, it was terrible. Anyway, it cleared up on its own. I still to this day believe that he had the chicken pox without ever getting a rash.

Try not to worry even though I know that is so very hard when it comes to our babies!! Everything you have mentioned here doesn't necessarily send up red flags. Ear infections, stomach flu, and even respiratory issues needing nebulizer treatments are really pretty common for young children. The fact that it happened so closely together stinks for your poor little guy, but that doesn't send up red flags for me either. Despite unseasonably warm temps for most of the country this winter, sickness has still been pretty prevalent all over. I can see having so many health issues come up one after another will take some time for your little guy to be back to his regular self.
Try to not worry! I am sure they are doing the bloodwork as a precautionary measure. I will pray that everything turns out just fine for your little guy!
God Bless!

It's good that your doctor is concerned and doing tests. There are a million things it could be, and there's a 99.9999 percent chance it's something totally treatable, especially a such an early stage. My advice is to let the doctor figure it out, and in the meantime DON'T GOOGLE IT. Googling symptoms leads to extra worries that are usually completely unfounded. Hang in there, enjoy some snuggle time with your son, and try to relax until the blood work comes back.

Poor boy and poor mommy. It sounds like he is really run down and his immune system hasn't gotten enough of a break for him to be able to get back on his feet. I'd probably go back to the basics at this point and concentrate on making sure he's eating well with plenty of fruit, veggies, and quality protein. Maybe a good probiotic too.

I'd also throw out his tooth brush and wash all his bedding to clear his area of those sneaky germs waiting to pounce on him.

Is your son in daycare or Mothers day out? The reason I ask is because our son was in a two-day a week program. I was working there to make some extra money. In the 6 months that he was there, he had 2 bouts of the stomach virus, multiple ear infections (looked into tubes), hand foot and mouth disease, and several colds. It was awful!!! I thought he was just a sickly kid. I pulled him out of the program because he was miserable and I was tired of going to the Dr. all the time. He was 5 mths old when we started there and almost 1 when we quit. He is now almost 9 yrs old and has never had another ear infection. The worst thing he has had is a common cold and had the stomach virus a few months ago, the first time since leaving that MDO. After we left I found out that the teachers were not cleaning the way they were supposed to and the director had addressed it with them several times. :( If your child is in a daycare, you may want to find another one.

Well my daughter whos 2 1/2 had ear infection 3 weeks ago. 1 week after finishing antibiotics she came down with croup. The dr gave her steriods & she continued having high fevers. I finally had enough of her getting worse after 5 days since being diagnosed with croup that I brought her into ER. They said ear infection with croup. I know its frustrating & you probably feel hopeless. Hang in there. I'll pray for you & your son.

Try not to worry too much - sometimes our little ones just need more time after something like for their bodies to fully heal and regain normal energy. My son, who is 9, had 3 back to back bad illnesses this past winter. Even after he was "better", it took him almost another month to be back to his normal self. I went thru a worrying phase, afraid he had mono or something, because he just had very low energy and wasn't himself. So, I'm sure with a 2yr old it could take time also. Run the tests that the doc suggests and keep an eye on him. Even if it is anemia, that can be fixed. Good Luck!

That stuff is really going around. First week of Jan. my son had fever induced "spasms" (Like a seizure but instead of lasting for a few minutes they only lasted a few seconds). Took him to the ER. They said he had an ear-infection and put him on some anti-biotics. Then a couple days after the anti-biotics were done, he came down with a horrible cold. Coughing, congested, wheezing... It was horrible. After a couple days of that we took him to his Dr who said that she thought that he might have strep (She didn't actually test him for it) but that he definitely still had the ear infection. So back on anti-biotics he went.

Anyways, he is JUST starting to feel better after all of that. So I know how you feel. It'll get better :)

I think its time to do some research, trust your mommy gut as to what to do from there. If you feel like there can be something more to be done to get to the root of the problem ask your doctor for a referal to see another doctor. My daughter had an ear infection and it took three different antibiotic rounds to get rid of it so if you count that up that is six weeks straight she was on antibiotics till one cleared up the infection apparently this is common according to other moms and doctors. Has he gone back and forth to daycare during this last month? When do you get the clood work back?

It's good that your dr is running test. I would sugest if he is on milk take him off of it. My son's have terrible reactions when they where little and milk was the only thing that we took away. We would know within 24 hours of them getting milk by accedent at daycare as they would end up in the emergency room with ear infections and asthma problems. The drs finally figured out they are allergic to the protines in milk. Cause it only happend with raw milk products ie: milk, ice cream, yougert. We put them both on soy when they where little and now they drink either rice or almond if they have milk. Oddly enough they can talorate cheese. But alot of the symptoms you are discribing exept for the actual flu sound just like what they would go through.

Good luck and God Bless!
