I have the Nikon D-40 and it is a great camera. Pricey, but worth every penny. Even my technilogically challenged husband can take great pics. I just set it on auto and hand it to him and the camera does everything for him (focus, flash, etc.) My brother came to visit last fall and even though he had a perfectly nice digital camera he ended up going out and buying one like mine because he loved it. Can you tell I LOVE this camera?

the Canon G9 is an awesome camera. Its compact size is great for keeping in your purse for those 'kodak moments'. It has the pre-programmed modes of Automatic, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Macro, Sports, Portrait, but also allows you to shoot full manual where you can adjust the ISO/Aperture/and shutter speeds to your liking. It also shoots in RAW as well as JPG. It has an on camera flash but also has a hotshoe for an external flash if you wish to bounce the flash off the ceiling for softer light. The lens has a nice reach on its zoom so you can take close up or as far as 200mm. It does well in low light situations too. There are even attachments you can buy to make the lens a wider angle or a longer zoom if you wish. The camera runs about $499.00 on amazon.com

congrats! I took over 1000 pics the first year I got my digital camera. The ONE thing I really recommend it a charging dock or rechargeable batteries, so you don't end up having to buy batteries all the time. I have had a Kodak for almost 5 years now and still love it. Technology is better now too, so you will have a blast! Enjoy it!

I have a canon power shot.We got it before my son was born.I love it it takes professional pics and is very fast and zooming in is easy and it zooms in a lot.We did our own birth announcments and everything.People are always asking us where we got our pics made we just smile and say we did them ourseleves.It also has an action setting so you can take pics really fast great for sports or running kids.I cant say enough about this camera.Got it a circuit city.

I have owned a Sony Cybershot for 4 years. I loved it so much that I had my work (a nonprofit organization) buy one for its photo/video needs. One thing I would suggest looking for is a camera with rechargeable AA batteries, rather than the special lithium battery. The advantage to the AAs is that if you go to grab the camera unexpectedly and the rechargeable batteries are dead, you can quickly put in some regular AAs to capture the moment before its gone. With the special lithium batteries, you have to charge them in the camera and by the time there's a charge, the photographic moment is probably gone.

I have a Rebel XT that we bought when my DD was 8 months old b/c of the blur factor with our other camera. ;) We loved the kit lens for awhile, but then decided we wanted a little more zoom and so we got another lens to get portrait shots. Have fun shopping!!

I got a new digital camera about a year and a half ago after my youngest son was born. It is a Canon Rebel XT. My main goal in searching for a camera was shutter time, because the beauties of a small child can't handle the delay. You can't very well ask a 6 month old or a two year old 'can you do that again so I can take a picture?' haha. I wouldn't trade this one. It is 8.0 megapixel, they make a 10.0, but for the price a 10.0 megapixel wasn't as improtant to me. It has features where you can catch pictures in motion, just hold the button down and it will take (i think) 15 shots in a row. It works perfect for me. Now, it doesn't have a video feature if that is important to you. And you have to actually look through hole to take your picture, you can't find it on you lcd screen. The picture shows up on the screen after you've taken it. It is just a point and shoot camera. It was about $650.00 when I bought it and it came with a 18-55mm lens - I am not sure if the price has gone down or not. As far as the zoom lens goes, tameron makes a 28-300mm zoom lens that is a generic that works perfectly with this camera. Its only about $150.00 or so on ebay, but best buy also carries them. My MIL and I did a ton of research - she bought the 10.0 megapixel - and the best reviews, service and price for these cameras were at www.beachcamera.com and as I am typing I am seeing on their site and it seems the price has gone down a bit. I just want to say, first congrats, digital cameras are great. Secondly, make sure that instead of a digital zoom get an optical zoom because the pictures turn out better. I've had both and an optical zoom produces much better pictures overall.

Hi, I have owned digital cameras since the media was a floppy disk. I take loads of photos of my grandchildren, pets and nature photos. I really like the Canon cameras. My Canon IS2 usues rechargeable AA batteries and SD media. You can shoot auto mode photos as well as other modes. The photos are very crisp. It takes movies too. I absolutely love it. It is easy to learn to use too. One last comment, do not buy a camera made by a company that is not known for cameras (film type). HTH, Nana

I have a Nikon SLR D-80.
It may be more camera than you're looking for, though... it's an "amateur pro" - heavy body (especially with the bigger lenses) but good for portraiture and pictures at WWE matches, ETC.

I'd go to Wolf Camera, and let them help you pick the "right" camera for your needs! Their employees are specially trained in the "technical" aspects of photography, and they can also help you with the "feel" of the camera you are looking for.

PS I took my lil sis's Cannon AE-1 with me to DC back when I was 16 for a Girl Scout trip....those cameras were not supposed to "double expose", but I got a few pics that did, and even those turned out GREAT!!! :)
