I just wanted to see if anyone had any reccomendations for San Antonio. My husband and I will be going in two weeks to celebrate our anniversary and this is the FIRST time we have ever been on vacation (and without the kids! woohoo!)

We are staying at the Drury Plaza on the Riverwalk. Just wanted to see if any mamas here have been to San Antonio and if so do you have any ideas for things for us that you really enjoyed.

We will not be going to amusement parks, maybe some sight seeing (but not sure what yet) and lots of eating out and some nightlife. I would also like to do some window shopping and anything that is fun and interesting.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just wanted to come back and let everyone know that I totally recommend Drury Plaza! There are two different Drury's on the River, so you need to make sure it is the Plaza, but it was beautiful, affordable and the freebies were awesome!

I totally recommend taking the riverboat cruise, it wasnt too expensive, but totally worth it. I was a little bummed that the nightlife there is not really kicking. It seemed that all there was to do was eat. Maybe we were not looking in the right place, I dont know.

But all in all, a great trip! Thanks for the tips!

I lived there for 7 years & my parents still do. The shops at La Villita are wonderful they are quaint & local. They have a little church and a art gallery. There are tons of great restaurants on the river. Casa Rio is my favorite.

Los Barrios is an excellent restaurant, also LaFonda and La Fogata are also good mexican food restaurants. The Mission trail in San Antonio is wonderful. There are 13 Texas Missions The Alamo, Riverwalk and also Breckenridge Park is quite nice. Good Luck and have a great time.

once you get on the riverwalk I don't think that you will be at a loss for ideas-I would definately suggest a boat ride but other than that just enjoy it all. Have a good time.

I grew up in SA. My favorite burger in the world is there at Chris Madrid's. It's a dive restaurant, in an old gas station, but it's great. It's just a few minutes north of downtown on Blanco Rd. I love the tostada burger, but the cheddar cheezy is also popular.

For mexican, I like La Fonda on Main. It's a quiet spot, with a pretty patio and yummy food. Get the tres leches cake.

Be careful about eating on the river -- there are a lot of tourist traps. Boudro's on the river is one that is good.

My husband and i went to san antonio in december. We stayed at a bed and breakfast owned by noble inns. I know you already said that you had a hotel, but even for one night the bed and breakfast was so romantic and personal. The one we stayed at was on the river walk with fire places and claw footed tubs in the suite. It felt like staying in our own mansion with a delicious complimentary breakfast. We went out to eat off of the riverwalk at a place called Silo. It's a modern take on american cuisine. The downstairs is a bar that we dodged, upstairs was the restaurant. They had the most amazing Bleu Cheese Gnocci (potato dumplings), normally i'm not a fan of bleu cheese but this was incredible. We went to the mall on the river walk at the bottom of one of the hotels, but it was obviously past it's prime. I wouldn't recommend it. Here is the address for silo:

1133 Austin Hwy

You already have some great suggestions. My husband and I just went to San Antonio to celebrate our 5th anniversary (this is also where we honeymooned!) and I would HIGHLY suggest taking the dinner cruise offered by three different restaurants on the riverwalk ( We went on the one hosted by cafe ole and it wasn't the best food (Mi Tiera is GREAT mexican food), but you get the double benefit of not having to wait for a table at one of the restaurants on the riverwalk (reservations for the cruises are a must!) AND you get a tour of the riverwalk. It's a really awesome experience!

There is also a small amphitheatre off the rivrwalk where they have entertainment (don't know the days and times nor prices, but it would probably be a nice experience).

Additionally, at the Riverwalk Mall (sorry can't remember the exact name of the mall) there is a comedy club. OH, and there is a dueling piano bar on the riverwalk. Just google "dueling piano" and "riverwalk", I'm sure you can find it.

Have fun!

Oh, gosh! There is a ton of stuff to do there! :) I agree with the previous poster...once you get to the Riverwalk, you'll find lots of things to do. lol

My husband went on a Segway tour with his job, located near the Alamo, and he said it was so much fun. There are also the ghost tours, which take you on the ghost tours of the different hotels and sites with ghosts. You can also have dinner on the River Barges, which take you on the Riverwalk tour while you eat. At Brackenridge Park, next to the Zoo, you can paddle-boat and take the little train around the park. The SA Botanical Gardens are near the Zoo, too, and you can see some really neat glass "pyramids" of different climates, plants, and scenery. There are lots of horse carriage rides Downtown, which are romantic.

Some of the local restaurants to try are: Piedras Negras de Noche, Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery (excellent Mexican pastries) and La Margarita Mexican Restaurant (same owner as Mi Tierra).

For shopping, you may want to check out (besides Rivercenter Mall) La Cantera, near Six Flags, North Star Mall, or the Forum, just off Hwy-281, minutes from Downtown. You could also check out James Avery Jewelers for some really nice silver and gold jewelry with Old World charm. (You'll find them in the Yellow Pages and at some malls; not sure if at the Rivercenter Mall.) Maybe you could get a pretty Anniversary ring or bracelet or earrings. :)

Anyway, let me know if you want more info. Have a great time!
