San Antonio Apartments & Childcare

My daughter and I are moving to San Antonio soon for my Ph.D. at UTSA (I am a single mama and she will be about a year old when we move next summer). We are looking at places to rent and are totally overwhelmed by all the options, even with the help of a locator. Our main concern is finding an apartment in a nice neighborhood that is a family community, safe for kids, and there are other people out walking dogs and with their kids in strollers all the time. Our budget is low since I'm a single mama and a doctoral student (i.e. around $600/month or less), but we can deal with things like a small place or even no washer/dryer or just having one bedroom for now. We really want a place that is clean, well-kept and has good maintenance, not a ton of loud college kids or shady management. Does anyone have any experience with apartments in good neighborhoods that they liked? Or even if you own your home, are there apartments in your neighborhood that might be worth looking at? We've been hoping to find something in the northwest area, within about 10 or 15 minutes of the university if possible, but are open to other options.

Also, I'm trying to find a childcare center for my baby. We're on several waiting lists, but are hoping to find a few more places that we can get recommendations on. We love the church center we're at in Austin currently.

And if there are any mama groups in the area that you know of, we'd love to hear about them. We're part of a great group in Austin and would like to find something similar in San Antonio if we can.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I am sorry I can't help with apartments or childcare but we do have a parents groups here through meetup.com. It is North San Antonio Parents group. I have been a part of the group for almost 4 years now and it has been great! Good luck to you with everything!

Zero answers so far,and I'm afraid I can't really help you. My biggest suggestion would be to make a trip down here and drive around the I-10 area (near UTSA to find a nice place). There are some nice apartments across the highway 1604 from UTSA. http://www.springsapartments.com/bandera/ They may be too pricey. It's gated, which is nice.

There are a lot of apartments off of i-10 b/c the medical center is nearby, and therefore a lot of medial students, plus all the UTSA students. PLENTY of apartments on Blanco road - inbetween 1604 and West Avenue is the best part of town. I looked into living in some of these. Don't remember the prices, but some were reasonable. It might be 15 - 20 minutes away from UTSA, depending on the time of day you'd be driving. It could be more during rush-hour.

I'm not really familiar with i-10 area, but Bandera road is not far from UTSA, as long as you stick to apartments around the 1604 area. UTSA is right by 1604 and i-10 intersection, so if you find something, try to get close to one of the main roads, in my opinion.

Best of luck! I am a SAHM north of San Antonio. Dont' know a thing about childcare unfortunately. Sorry! Good luck with your search though. I have a friend who's a very sweet lady who is an apartment locator. If your person is a dud, let me know and I will give you my friend's contact info.

My daughter, her husband and their 19 month old live in San Antonio. They are up off of 410 west and Blanco. His family is from there and is very established in the community. She can give you lots of info as to affordable and decent living. She is also on waiting list for childcare, but she is taking online classes for her degree plan. She is currently taking care of 3 small children 2 days a week for another mother who is an RN, while she works her shifts. Also she may help you in finding childcare for your daughter. You may contact me directly or via email for her info. I will give her a heads up. ____@____.com

If i'm not mistaken I believe that UTSA has a childcare center for the professors and students kids as well. May be worth looking into.

Good luck,
