Sams Club

I go to Costco about once every 2-3 months. I avoid and go out of my way to stay away from anything "Walmart" or "Sams" due to the business practices they use.....all noted and proven......if you ever watch the financial network you can get an ear full.

I am not a coupon shopper but I do have space so I buy TP, Papertowels, fresh produce, and some cleaning items for the house. I am name brand loyal so I only buy what brands I use excpet for Kirkland TP and Papertowels.

my membership is under-utilized too - but there are a few things that I will only buy at Sam's. I LOVE their member's mark baby wipes and won't use anything else. If you have a dog that likes rawhide bones, I haven't found anything cheaper than Sam's 14 pack for $9+change. My kids LOVE LOVE LOVE craisins - so I buy their giant package of them. Their photo printing is also very nice.

I have never felt like Sams was a good deal, just like I was paying twice as much for twice as much. Also I find that the quality of the fresh fruit and veggies at Sams to be not what I am expecting.

We are huge Costco fans. I always leave there feeling like I got a great deal, and their store brands with a very few exceptions are just as good as the name brands. Good luck to you :)

I have a Sam's card and my wife has a Costco card. I watch the sales very closely.

I had to buy some things for a church dinner and comparison shopped several grocery stores plus Sam's and Costco. On the 9 items I was looking for (comparing only Sams to Costco) Sams was cheaper on 7 of the 9 items were cheaper at Sams. They were tied on one item and Costco was cheaper on one item. All of the items I was looking for ended up being on sale someplace and I bought the sale items at the grocery stores because they were cheaper than Sams and Costo on all nine items.

Sams is cheaper than grocery stores on the items grocery stores don't put on sale like spices and milk and dairy products. (I can save between $.80 to $1 per pound on cheese at Sams vrs grocery stores because stores here seldom have a meaninful store sale on cheese.) Sams is very much more expensive on the things stores do put on sale, like meat, vegetables and frozen foods like french fries,ice cream, pizzas, shrimp and sea food. Sams just carries most things in bulk. I've even found things at Walmart cheaper than at Sams. Some of my friends say Sams has higher quality meats and vegetables, but I told them about things that were cheaper else where and the same brands as Sams and they choose to buy at Sams anyway. I've had Sams meats and I can't tell the difference between the meats not on sale at Sams and the meats on sale at the average grocery store. Every time I go to Sams I check the prices in the meat counter. Sam's are just more expensive unless there aren't sales. Round steaks are $3.47 per pound at Sams and $1.87 lb at Staters (on sale). When round steaks are regular price, Sams is cheaper, but I can't remember the last time I bought meats that were not on sale. Chicken breasts are $.99 lb at Staters (on sale) and much more at Sams. The key is whether or not you are willing to shop the sales.

Sams is cheaper on gas, and some electronics. Sam's fresh pizza is cheaper compared to take out when you get the deluxe vrs others speciality pizzas and tastes very good.

I figure I save enough on the stuff I do buy at Sams to pay for my membership or I wouldn't have a membership. I cannot tell you why my wife insists on using Costco. But I've never understood feminine logic. When I have asked her she doesn't have a good reason, so I gave up on that issue. I pick my battles carefully.

dog food, pasta-elbow mac and spaghetti sold in large bag with a zip lock top, 4 pound can peterpan peanut butter, I like the 4 lb can taste better than the 18 oz taste I can't figure why they taste different but they do. it is even my favorite pb now. shredded cheese in the 5 pound zip lock baggie into smaller portions like 1lb, never pop! Sodas are way overpriced. I like the members mark tp 6 people and we use alot. HAHA I love some convience foods when the kids get older or things are busy egg rolls, fried rice, jacks pizza multipack(4), angus burgers complete with bun a little over $1 each very awesome burger 1.5 minutes each to cook, fish sticks yellow bag Ummm, Mikes hard lemonade is a like sale price $1 ea but a 24 pack. Photo finish is the cheapest around send online and pick up in store, We have bought tires and car batteries too all good prices but still compare to walmart and others, Sams stand behind thier waranty. My last tahoe battery was bad on the 3 year anniversary and they replaced free! I never had a problem. Gas is a good deal if they have a station, hunts tomato sauce is .60 ea, But do watch prices i do not need diapers anymore but sale + coupons can be cheaper. If baby starts to get rashes from off brands stick with name brand I fought rashed on my youngest 3 to no end now I figured on my 5th child rashes are caused by cheaper diapers for mine. Pampers all the way for me. get a list started for price comparisons. at first Sams is overwhelming but it quickly becomes natural as a regular store just taller. lol. I would miss my membership

I buy all my meats there, you definitely save money by doing that. The only other things I really buy there are things I find myself buying at the grocery store every week, like pasta, juice, applesauce, peanut butter, crackers, goldfish, and cheese for example. I have done the math and by buying these things only once a month I am really saving money. I don't buy diapers there because I can get them cheaper at Target by buying the Target brand diapers. Look online at the prices of things before you go there so you can compare and know if you are really saving money or not.

I have found milk and cheese to be the best deals. I also buy Ramen Noodles, bologna, fruit, and grits. When my son was younger, I bought diapers, wipes, and formula. If you buy diapers, don't get the Members Mark diapers. The Huggies Snug and Dry I liked a LOT better and were only a few cents per diaper more. Definitely check the regular store and get price per item, like the price per toilet paper roll, and compare. For some stuff, it is cheaper to buy generic at the regular store, but if you know what to get, you can stock up and save a lot. For the most part, I am a generic brand shopper, but there are a few things I like name brand, and the name brand stuff usually is cheaper at Sams and you don't have to wait for sales. Also, when your membership runs out, you may want to consider getting a summer membership. Those are $15 and last for 100 days. You can stock up on a lot of stuff right before the membership ends and save some money on the membership fee. Good luck!

I buy boneless, skinless chicken breasts and hamburger exclusively at Sam's. I have tried other meat too. We really enjoyed it but found that meats other than hamburger and chicken tend to sit in our freezer for quite a while because we don't eat it very often. I have found hamburger and chicken at Sam's to be the best in terms of flavor, texture, and tenderness. The chicken breasts are so thick that I bring them home and slice them in half before freezing them. I generally get 3-4 bags of chicken with 4 pieces in each bag. I generally get 3-4 bags out of a 5-6 pound package of hamburger. I also love their fruit. I have on occasion bought clothes and had good luck with them, as well as snacky stuff like granola bars.

I agree that a store of that size can be a bit overwhelming.....However it's great for items that don't expire but that you will always need. I am one of those people who buys the huge 52 rolls of toliet paper..You will always need toliet paper and it doesn't expire?? I buy detergent, cleaning supplies, diapers...( we use Pampers). Some frozen foods, cases of water...etc. Hope this helps:)

I have now 5 kids and we go to SAMS more than when we had 2 kids; however, I do think you can shop better at SAMS if you just do some menu planning ahead. I remember when we were a smaller family I would budget $50.00 just for meats at SAMS. I would come home and split up the meat to freeze and it lasted us a couple of weeks. I didn't buy all my meat there, but I did buy the basics.

A few items that are definitely cheaper and you can freeze are:
Frozen blueberries (at store it's a small bag and cost over $4.00 - Big bag at SAMS and is around $7.50
Frozen Strawberries
Froen triple berries (much cheaper at SAMs)
Skinless, boneless chicken breast
pork chops
beef
orange juice
All frozen veges, green beans, corn, broccoli normandy

Eggs (you can get 36 eggs or a whole carton, again much cheaper)
Whole wheat bread (you have to buy 2 loaves at 3.98 for both)
organic lettuce
fresh aspargus (2 lbs for 4.00, way cheaper)
coffee

There's so much more, I feel like I'm writing down my whole grocery list. We go there every 2 weeks and stock up, sometimes we don't need to buy the same thing because we still have some left. We generally spend about $150.00 on the basics every 2 weeks. We also have a small deep freezer and a 2nd refrigerator in the garage, so we do have room for more.
It's really about bulk shopping and planning. If you plan ahead you really can utilize SAMS to save money. I do agree that it's overwhelming to go in there. I do recommend you give a chance. Try to go alone once without your kids so you can really check it out and think it through.

Also, you can shop on-line at SAMS and then go to their store and pick up it 24 hours later. They have it all ready for you and it's no extra charge.

I bought a sam's club membership once, before I had any kids. I figured out later it wasn't the thing for such a small family. I did buy milk cheaper and always tried to get gas there because it was cheaper..... and Sams Members Mark brand seemed like good deals.
Now with two kids, I wish I had my membership again, but the nearest store is over an hour away where we live now. Me and Hubby used to "eat out" there at there little snack place because it was cheap and good.

I only buy toilet paper, paper towels, and breakfast bars there. We also get our gas there. I go like once a month since for me its a big trip.

I use Costco and only really use it for things that I use a LOT. Toilet paper, paper towels, snacks for my son and his friends, etc. You could drive yourself crazy cost comparising with grocery stores. Usually if a grocery store has a sale, it is probably a better price but on an everyday basis, your Sam's or Costco price will be better. It's how they do business. Every now and then you can find good deals on other items. Like I bought a planter there this year for $20 that I know I would have paid a lot more elsewhere. In that instance they buy in large quantities and get good deals. You'll figure out how to make it work for you. I do the once a month trip and sometimes I feel like I should do more too, but it works best for me and I don't have time to do all that comparison shopping.

I have found some bargains on the Clothes and books as well, although we rarely buy from the dept, unless its Christmas or B-Days.....

We buy large 2 bags of shredded cheese, corn dogs, fruit cups in the metal cans - not plastic ones, box of 50 bags of chips (school year), husband loves Raman Noodles...lol, bananas, Milk, Waffles, frozen Strawberries, water softner salt.....

I am a penny pincher and I have looked at the prices and just because you are buying in bulk DOES NOT mean you are getting a better deal. You just have to shop less.....

We have a SAMsmembership and loved it - especially for the diapers - we were fine with the regular Huggies. Other items that are staples for us are precooked meatballs - very nice to nuke a couple for spaghetti or even as the main food/ meat for little ones - , any of the meat you like (pork, beef, chicken) from the meat dept. - we have a food saver and then package it into portions that we would use for a meal, yogurt, string cheese, hamburger patties 1/3 pound sirloin and bocca burgers, fruit snacks, cheeseits, pretzels (any snack food really when it comes down to it), salsa fresca, fresh fruit - much better prices than grocery store (at least ours).

I only get a few items there I find it very helpful for snack items mostly,bread,chips 2 packs for a low price,crackers,fruit especially strawberries & grapes,cupcakes for parties,I don't do grocery shopping there I do have a deep freezer but it seems like i'll be paying sooo much at the end.As for diapers and wipes I get a large pack of diapers once a week
a 3 pack of wipes every other week I have great coupons for these & I use coupons alot for everday items.The membership cost is 40.00 bucks but I convinced my brother he needed one to so we split the cost...

We're a family of 6 and I probably should use my Sams Club membership a lot more, I don't. I hate that they are only open until 8:30pm. I usually do all my grocery shopping at night after all the kids are in bed. BUT, I do buy most of our fruit at Sams Club. It is way cheaper than the grocery store and my kids can devour a 4 lb pack of strawberries and a big container of blueberries at one snacktime.

We buy our milk there (alot less than Cub), garlic bread, corn dogs, breaded chicken, chips and crackers (my kids go through Ritz crackers really fast). I look at the books, magizines, and movies too. Just watch the price on the movies and cds because some times you can finds great deals and sometimes they are the same as any store or maybe higher. When we have parties we buy the hotdogs, hamburgers and buns there too. I didn't like their diapers but was able to bring back the opened package which was nice. I also buy saline solution there because a box that contains two regular bottles plus a travel one plus two storage cases is only around eleven bucks.

Its tough you have to watch the prices some things are cheaper others arent. I buy my milk .OJ bread salad dressing oils coffee...clothes (not a big selection) butter, those things seem tobe cheaper as far as the meats go the only thing I found cheaper was the boneless skinless chicken breast members mark brand I always pay 1.99 a pound and they are soooo good other meats seem much more expensive. Just have to really know your prices when you are shopping there.

I haven't seen anyone mention Sams Brand toilet paper. We tried to save some money and switched to Quilted Northern, I wasn't too happy with that so we gave Sams brand a try and I love it. It's really similar to Charmin, and much cheaper. I'm a huge buyer of brand names but this is one that I don't care. We also use the wipes, and I've had no problems with them. Milk is almost $1 cheaper a gallon than our grocery store. We buy our frozen chx breast there, but I've found better deals on ground meat at the grocery store. I can usually find it on sale for under $2 a pound and it's around $2.50/lb at Sams.

For years I was a member at Costco and I stopped shopping there because I felt I bought too much when I was there. For instance I would buy clothes because they were so cheap and usually I never wore them because either they didn't fit (because I couldn't try them on) or I just didn't like them. I am lured by low price and make purchases I normally wouldn't. For the food, I just don't have the room to store all the extras.

I shop at Costco but it is similar. Gas is always way cheaper there than elsewhere. I buy a lot of meat there too- especially Salmon and Chicken but I don't eat beef often and if I did I would probably buy it there too. I also find great deals on children's clothing. Garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, ziplocs etc are usually a better deal at Costco but sometimes there are good sales elsewhere evening the price out. The biggest deals are probably on electronics, medications, eyeglasses, etc. I bought a years supply of my allergy med (in the store brand- so generic) for about the cost of a 2 months supply of the store brand at Walgreen's.

I buy the members mark formula ($20 for a tub bigger then any other brand), members mark diapers ($10 cheaper then huggies at sams) and huggies wipes (720 count with tub for $15). I'm not picky on brand as long as quality is there and after 4 kids, I have tested them all out, with proof that sams brand is worth it.

I also buy meat in bulk and freeze in smaller quantities at home... HUGE savings, especially when they have a "Special buy" item.

We buy most of our groceries at sams because we go through so much and its cheaper to buy in bulk. EX: String cheese, yogurt (although I think that if I shopped at a regular grocery store more often, I'd save a few cents on the yoplait i buy), deli meat, kids snacks, koolaid pouches, toilet paper, health and beauty (although i'm with you about not buying 2-600count packs of tylenol, because they go to waste before exp date, but kids motrin and cold medicine is cheap there), vitamins, contact solution, eye exams!, birthday cake and fruit. I have never seen bigger strawberries then the ones sams sells in season. They are the size of apples and delicious. And they don't go bad after a day like the ones from a farmers market...

We also pump our gas at sams club- they always have lowest price (not low price with CASH or COMPANY CARD special), so I dont waste time driving around town looking for a deal or filling up every 2 days. I pump once every other week when I shop and done.

We also like their ice cream sundae at the snack bar :-) We share one for all of us- what a treat at $1.50!

I've found that if you break down per item cost between walmart and sams club, you pay a bit more at walmart then sams. Although at Sams, the initial investment is larger then walmart...

We pay $40 for our annual membership, but save thousands annually on our purchases.

I have a Sam's ms card and the only thing I really use it for is the meat. Since I don't live extremely close to it, I go about every other month or so and buy meat. I buy the large tubes of hamburger and then split it up when I get home. I usually buy about 20 lbs or so. same with the pork chops. I also will buy the paper plates. But not a whole lot else. I won't buy the pop since that is cheaper at Walmart, or other places. But I don't do my main shopping there.

I have a sam's club membership and LOVE it. Milk is MUCH cheaper by about 1- 1.50 a gallon and i also get cheese yogurt, snack chips, fruit, toilet paper, and bottled water. I used to get their brand diapers and never had a problem, but then i started shopping the deals at walgreens, and managed to get over a years supply of huggies for $1a pack so i switched to huggies.

if you want to compare shop, right on the labels they do tell you the price each, or per oz, or per lb. I also know the same info is on the stickers at walmart, so you can always compare shop that way as well.

We save the cost of membership with the gas station alone. their are times that gas is close to 50 cents cheaper than other stations around. Also if you are looking at any electronics, or household items (non food), they typically are cheaper. i buy their brand laundry soap and it will do 200 loads and I paid $14 for it. The best thing about their soap is there is NOTHING in it BUT soap. so if you have allergies, or use that hypoallergenic soap that's the best deal. No enzymes or whiteners, just soap. I know many people who use it on their cloth diapers, and LOVE It. We plan on purchaseing a tv, and they have the best prices, PLUS with the membership we get a better warranty package as well on it.

Do you know how to figure out if you're getting the best deal on something from Sams? When you look at the shelf price tag, read the "price per unit" or "price per oz" and then compair it to your regular store prices. Some stuff is much cheaper, other stuff, well, not so much. The things I buy the most (for my family of 6...4 kids ages 9, 6, 2 & 7 mo) are Pampers (I like the baby dry and lucky for me, both of my little ones are in the same size now, lol), Huggies baby wipes, Sunbeam bread, Kraft american cheese slices. I also buy my laundry soap, (All Free & Clear and Dreft) fabric softener, bleach and dryer sheets there. The All Free & Clear is about the same price as Walmart, but the Sams bottle is bigger so I don't have to buy it as often. I buy canned veggies there. I also order my contacts through their optical department because they're about 40% cheaper than anywhere else I've found.

I don't buy much food from Sams mainly because I don't have the storage capacity for it. However, if you do, or even if you have someone to "share" with, their meats are a really good deal. Sometimes I'll buy some fresh produce and split it with my MIL because their produce is really nice.

We too buy the paper towels and toilet paper (POM brand), we did the math and it is much cheaper...and feels fine. We also buy syrup, ketchup, beef jerkey, chips, parmesan cheese, canned veggies, and the powdered Nestle Quik (way cheaper) since we use it to make our chocolate milk with. I have noticed that a lot of the grocery items cost more, so you do have to watch. There are great prices on produce, cakes, shredded cheese, and the rotis. chicken and ribs as well! I have started into the heavy couponing in other stores and doing that you can pretty much beat all of these prices, however, but it is work and time and you can't always get everything you need for cheaper when you want it.

The deals that I buy are toilet paper, paper towels and Snuggle fabric softner and if you eat meat, such as hamburger it is essentially $2.49 a lb or Rib eye steaks are a great value. The family size chips are 2 for $5.00 which at Target are $4.00 each. The bread is a great value for Orowheat for the grain brands.

I don't buy diapers there, I don't buy the name brands but buy the Target brand which are cheaper than the bulk Sam's Club brand.

And clothes for you or your family are great, but you can't try them on so sometimes it's hit or miss and toys are a great value, they are ususally big ticket toys like trikes or children's basket ball hoops or giant 1,000 piece Lincoln Logs.

I buy all my meat, lunch meat, bread there, toliet paper, chips, milk, bulk snacks etc...i also buy ziplocs there and take the time to split larget things up. You may also want to consider getting a small freezer...otherwise it is difficult to buy in bulk.

we have sams and costco and have stopped shopping at sams. for us costco has a better selection, and cheaper, of meats, fruit, vegetables. we get our juice for kids there, toothpaste, toothbrushes, drinks for us, meats, toilette paper, paper towels, pasta, water etc. we get the coupons every 2 weeks and it's much cheaper. we shop 2 a month.

I buy their apple sauce, hidden valley ranch dressing(its all my girls will eat), the small lunch sized cans of diced fruit, fruit snacks, granola bars, frozen waffles, chicken tenders, fish sticks, orange juice, cottage cheese, some breads and chips, meat and some produce. I also buy alot of my spices and stuff there, the ones I use alot anyways. I buy bathroom stuff there, like tampons, shampoos, razor refills. Those things are sometimes cheaper at the other stores with coupons and if they are on sale. You can end up spending alot of money at one time there but I really find it worth while in the end! I use the Member's Mark diapers and like them... I have used Huggies and Pampers too and don't really notice a difference. I really like their Member's Mark baby wipes. I like that they come in a soft container which is great for the diaper bag and traveling, but at home I just open the bag and put them in an old Huggies wipe box. I have found they stick together better when pulling them out so I don't have to pop the lid open as much.
We also buy milk, bananas, bread, chex mix mini bags, lettuce (we go through a lot), the fruit is usually a good deal, but you need to eat quickly if you buy a big package. We also like their cooked whole chickens and take-n-bake pizzas.

Ok, I know it's simple, but peanut butter! My daughter LOVES pb and j sandwiches and we go thru pb like it's water! And it's a great deal! Cereal! Granola Bars! I actually spent a day pricing things there and then at the regular grocery store to see what was a better deal...there's quite a few!

We shop at Sam's, Ultra Foods, and Valli Produce for groceries, and we sometimes shop at Walmart for miscellaneous items.

Our typical shopping cart at Sam's has: fresh boneless chicken breast, frozen blueberries, frozen tropical fruit mix, milk, frozen Tyson chicken nuggets, bread, and Clif bars. We do buy cereal, paper towels and toilet paper there. We shop at Sam's for our parties, too: cups, plates, plasticware. When my son was in diapers, we bought the Sam's brand and wipes. Edited to add that we sometimes go to Sam's for last minute dinner ideas... pizza and roasted chicken.

Valli Produce is our go-to place for produce.

Ultra Foods sometimes has better prices than Sam's on bread, milk, cereal or paper products. Sometimes a random sale on ground turkey or produce brings us to Ultra, too. We keep an eye out for those sales.

My inlaws and boyfriend all have one membership. I think my boyfriend found the best price for our big screen TV there, and my inlaws liked buying formula there (which my baby doesnt use anymore). We rarely use it. Dont let that put you off though. My inlaws are huge "sale" watchers so I just go where they tell me the sales/best buys are LOL. =)

If you print pictures, it's a great deal. I also like the rotisserie chickens, and we plow through the fruit, especially in the summer. You'll have to watch that, though, because sometimes you can get it cheaper in the grocery...but sometimes not!

I usually don't bother with the huge quantites of paper plates or paper goods because i just can't store that much stuff. I also skip the drinks since i can usually get them cheaper at stock-up sales at the grocery.

Oh, and we always plan a the trip around lunch so we can eat in their deli - Pizza & Drink for $1.87, plus $1.50 for a triple berry sundae! Lunch & dessert for under $15?? Heck yah!

Their precooked whole chickens are an outstanding deal - much bigger size than what you get at the grocery stores and at least $2+ off. Cheese is also a great deal as are the Frito-Lay chips where you can get two giant family bags for $5. Oh, and their sheet cakes are very cheap and very good!

I've got a Sam's club one and you can get deals on most dairy, can goods, cleaning products. I've noticed on their meats (mostly the beef) it's the same price per pound as the regular walmart!! Sam's does seem to carry more name brand in cleaning and personal hygiene products too.

We used to have Costco and I do think their fresh food prices are cheaper but they lack in name brand bulk products like laundry soap and what not and I didn't care for a lot of their brand name stuff.

Best bet, if you shop at a regular store, not the price of the item for how many things you get. Like the toilet paper. I can get 12 double rolls of Angel soft for $4.00 at Walmart. So that comes out the 33 cents a roll. now I need to find the Angel soft at Sams and see what the price per roll is there to see which is the better deal. If it's only a few pennies then it may not be worth it especially if you have to drive 35 mins to get there like I do just for toilet paper but I have a good size list of stuff I'll buy from there like my trash bags (force flex), laundry soap, toilet bowl cleaner, tide, cascade, etc. A good way to see what they have and for how much-get on their website and look around for the products you want to buy and price compare in the comfort of your own home!

We go to Costco every two weeks and I stock up on coffee (Dunkin Donuts brand - yum), apple juice (Motts, 1/2 of what we pay at the grocery store), meats, shampoo, tampons, Advil/Tylenol (adult & child), Enfamil formula (waaaaay cheaper than anywhere else), wine, paper towels/TP/Kleenex, crackers (Goldfish etc), granola bars, canned goods. Basically, anything I have room to store, I will buy at Costco. I try to buy produce there but like many have said, only as much as we will use or it will go bad. I am not a Sams fan but I do love Costco and with a little planning, you can save money and also buy a lot at once, thus saving time in the long run.

When you're there, look at the unit price. It's listed in the same area as the price for the product, just smaller. The same is true at Walmart and grocery stores.

If the unit price that you're paying (usually cost/ounce, cost/diaper, etc) is less at Sam's Club/Costco, keep shopping there. If it's cheaper at the other stores with coupons, do that.

We go to Costco/Sam's Club at least once/week for fruit, meat, etc. Produce in grocery stores is WAY more expensive. We can freeze the meat (chicken in particular is usually wrapped in smaller containers for easier storing at Costco) and have it available as needed.

We have extra space in our garage for the paper towels, toilet paper, etc.

It is MUCH less expensive in the long run than going to Walmart, Target, Kroger for all your needs. But, you have to be willing to store large quantities or to be able to go through huge amounts of perishable items.

And, the return policies are FANTASTIC. You may not be able to try the clothes there on, but if they aren't great, take them back - usually no questions asked.
