I do many things from home or around the home. 1) I'm a Mary Kay consultant and make a very decent amount doing that. I have my own website with a virtual makeover option that my distant customers use and my local customers come to me--I don't have to leave my house or let my kids with a sitter. If you're interested in getting started with this, send me a PM and I'll be more than happy to help you. 2) I babysit in my home. 3) I clean houses on the days that my hubby's home from work. 4) I help take care of the neighbors' yards. 5) I do sell occasional items on ebay. That is such a hit and miss thing to do though. Most people are such sticklers when it comes to paying what something is worth. I have a few friends who have etsy accts. They do well...when the right person wanders onto their site. You have to be able to promote it to get a decent result. Good luck in finding something!

I actually asked this a few weeks ago and basically what I got is that your best bet is something like Mary Kay or Medical Transcription, which you need a license for. There is of course money in Ebay, but be careful, there are a lot of scams out there to sell stuff for people. Writing a childrens book could be a great idea. But again I have to warn you, I was published many many years ago and getting published is not easy. There are people out there (like me) who this is there dream and it takes a lifetime just to get discovered (or it may never happen). Getting published and making money off of it is a lot like being a movie star.

If you can afford a school like M-Tech ($4000) and you are relatively computer savvy and smart I would suggest a Med Tech degree. Right out of "college" you can be earning $1200/month part time from your own home -)

Many people are looking for a "plan B" with the way our economy has suffered. More and more women are staying home to raise their children, and I am one on them. I am an Unfranchise owner and I work primarily from my home. Since the inception of this company we have never had a down quarter, we operate at a profit which means the company has no debt. The same management team is still in place 18 years later. What makes this company very unique is the compensation plan. We are not a Multi-Level-Marketing company we are compensated using the binary system. It's rather simple but somewhat complex to wrap your head around. What is important though is that Market America has generated almost $3 billion in accumulated retail sales, and individuals have earned over $1.8 billion in commissions and retail profits. This is what made me take a real close look at this business. Any company paying out over half of their profits to their business owners is worth investigating. I truly believe that we are creating the economy of the future!

Committing 10 to 15 hours weekly of result producing activity will grow a business capable of earning $142,000 of residual income in 2 to 3 years time. This is the average however many have achieved these earnings in a shorter period of time.

I sell on both Ebay and Etsy. Ebay's search function is much better and listings are picked up by google searches. Their fees are higher and customers tend to have more of a garage sale mentality. I've been selling there for 6 years now.

Etsy is for vintage and hand crafted items. The customer base is looking more for well crafted quality items than a bargain. I've been selling there for 2 years now. The search function brings up the newer listed items, so if you are selling items in a saturated market, you will get lost quickly. Listings last for 90 days instead of the 7-30 on Ebay though.

You would need to set up an account on both sites and verify your identity with a Paypal account. This process I believe took about a week. You'll want to download and print USPS shipping rates and familiarize yourself with them. If you've never done so before, buy an item or two on both sites to familiarize yourself with the process, as well as build a reputation. Start with US sales, but consider international as well. I would say that about 30-35 % of my business is international.

To be successful you need to find a nitch. Do some soul searching and ask yourself what you really enjoy doing the most. What are your talents? Now ask yourself how you can do that and make money at it. Research what's already out in the market and figure out how you can stand out. Working from home is the best and more liberating thing I've ever done!

The small business association is a great resource that is free through your state if you have questions about running a business. There's a ton to learn and I will admit I was intimidated by the whole process for a couple of months. What I do: I have a computer, a digital camera, a vinyl cutter, an industrial heat press, and 3 sewing machines. I cut decals and print fabric items, selling to a global market in an economically depressed area. I've never gotten rich doing this, but I make enough to live comfortably and still get things done around the house. It didn't all happen overnight though.

Nothing says you can't still write that children's book and sell it on Etsy down the road either....

Here are my suggestions: I do 3 things..

I sell Avon (which I LOVE by the way!).

I am an independent distributor for Send Out Cards - an AMAZING system to stay in touch with friends/relatives/business associates by sending a card for special occassions, or just to stay in touch - I can send gifts with the card as well. NO inventory or anything - all you need is a computer.

And, I am a Virtual Assistant. No degree or training required, just use the skills you already have and put yourself out there to help people.
