I have been home with my son for almost a year now, he will be two years old in August, and do to a change in my husbands job I will have to return to work in August or September. I wanted to know if any other moms have had to put their child in daycare around the age of two? I'm worried that it will be tough on him. I take him to the nursery at church and at the end of that he is ready for me to get him, asking for mommy most of the time. We are hoping that I can find a job with hours of 10-6, my husband should be done around 3 so my son shouldn't be there much more then 5 hours a day. Any advice is helpful. Thank you!

What can I do next?

Hi T.!

I feel for you! Going back to work is very difficult on both you & child. I went back for a while when my kids were babies until I couldn't take the heart ache anymore. I quit with such a worry that we wouldn't make it. My husband didn't make a lot and we had a mortgage & 2 car payments along with other bills but here I am 8 years later with 4 home based business's (3 are mine 1 is my husband's) He was working for someone else at the time of me leaving my job. Last year my business's pulled us through a month of being able to pay bills solely on my income while waiting for my husband to collect over due invoices from his business. Just something to think about because I know how hard it was to leave my babies at daycare! You can check out what I do and read a little more about me by checking out my web ____@____.com

Hi T.,

I too stayed home with my little guy for 1 year before going back to work. It was a difficult decision but we need two incomes right now. What also made me feel a little better is that he needed to be around other children. It is good for them to interact, to do activties, etc. We found a great daycare, and the teachers are wonderful. It also gives me an opportunity to be an adult at work. Looking at the situation, and seeing how well he does at daycare, I wouldn't change it. It was difficult at first, for he is a very light sleeper....so we decided to start daycare part time, three weeks before I returned back to work. This allowed him and me to adjust, and if there were any problems, then you had some time to fix them. It takes a child anywhere from 2-4 weeks to get adjusted....ours was 2 weeks. He cried, and cried when I left, but 2 minutes later, he was fine. It tore me up more than him.
In regards to working from home. I did this for a while, but due to him not sleeping well for me during the day, I was unable to get my work done. This is just my experience.
Good luck, and I'm not sure where you are located, but if you'd like, I have done all the research on our local daycares, if I can be assistance.

Hi T.,
I also, went back to work full time after my son was about 3 mos. old and HATED it! Ended up I was home with him for about 1-1/2 hrs per night. Fortunately, I had a boss who allowed me to switch to Part Time and that worked out WAY better for me :) My DH and I have, at times, also worked opposite shifts so O. of us can be home--hard? YES! But worth it? Definitely.
If you absolutely HAVE to go back, ask everyone you know for recommendations as far as day care centers. Research their ratings, etc.
O. bit of advice, unless you have a particularly lucrative career, it may not be worth going back to work and paying for daycare. Please take a little time to do ALL of the math: income (less taxes) minus gas money, daycare, clothing, other work expenses. It may turn out that you are working for practically nothing. I feel that the whole "mothers that HAVE to go back to work becasue we NEED two incomes" is largely an American myth. It's better to reduce your spending and costs and work around your child.
If you absolutely need the additional money, I would advise you to find a FT or PT job where you can work totally around your husband's hours to completely cut out the daycare cost.
Good luck whatever you do!

Hey T.,I love what Denise had to say on going back to work. There are so many work related expenses, you will likely take very little home in the long run.Really sit down and do the math,if you make $25,000 a year, you will be very surprised as to how little you actually add to your families finances.

I would consider working from home with a business.Do some research, there are many mom friendly businesses out there, you can add to your income, replace an income or even be totally financially secure over the next few years, depending on you and your goals.
Here is my site,www.LiveYourDreamsAtHome.com

Good luck with your decision.

If you find a good caring teacher where the room is not too crowded, he should be ok. But expect him to get every cold that comes down the pike. I put my now 2 year old in day care in Feb of this year {I work there in another room}, and it was hard - just take afew days to stay with your little one at the day care to get him used to it with you - it will be alot less scary that way. I live in Warrington if you want any recommendations, I've been to them all - lol. My intention was to go back to my first job as an EMT, but I took a job there just so I could still kind of be with her.
good luck dear, and take care

It may be h*** o* both of you for the first few weeks but you do what you need to do...try to get the best schedule you can and go from there.. Try not to guilt yourself for what ever you do.

Maybe you can find an in home care program with just a few children versus a center..that is what we use for our kids and they love their "aunt"

the State of PA just started a new website on specially approved licensed centers...can't recall the name of the program I heard it on the radio the other day but maybe you can search the state website.

Good luck...it may be hard but it will probably be harder for you than him, just hang in there and make the most of all the time you have when you are at home.
