I am new to the area and haven't had the opportunity to stay home with my child until now. She is 3 and we are looking for things to do in the afternoons to take up time while daddy is at work. Anyone have any ideas? Today we are gonna check out the park by the river a few exits down from us. Other than play at the playground inside McDonald's and walk around the mall, I don't know what to do.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much.

Check the library out. They have story hours, etc. Find yours here: http://www.50states.com/oregon/libraries.htm

If you have the money, join a gym with a Kid's Club. I don't know where you live, but Club Sport has a great program. Good way to decompress for a couple hours and have some adult time while your little one plays with other kids.

The Children's Museum and OMSI have great discovery play areas (and you can become a member if you really like them and plan to visit frequently). Same goes for the ZOO, but the others are really good for rainy days.

There are kids play gyms like The Little Gym or Gymboree or places like Westside Gymnastics Academy has a good program for 3-5 year olds.

Have fun!

When we moved to Portland 3 yrs ago with our 18 mths old girl, I didn't know the city at all. I joined one of the many local playgroups (meetup.com) and it was the best thing ever because we would meet at different places, like Zoo, Childrens' Museum, OMSI and different parks with the kids. It pays off to get memberships for ZOO and OMSI for sure. We go there a lot. Also, we are using our community center for kids classes and swimming. Check out your local community center near your home for very reasonable classes and activities. Also, when your in library, get the free monthly METRO PARENT and PORTLAND FAMILY magazines. They list all the festivals and activities for families. There is always something going on, not only in Portland but all the cities around. Good Luck !

Hi, M.--

Where do you live? If you are in the Portland area, there are many great places to check out. Do you have any memberships at places like the Oregon zoo, OMSI, or the Children's Museum? They all have great activities going on for kids. The parks and recs also have lots of fun activities with nature hikes and classes--some of them free. We love art classes at My Masterpiece Art Studio, story times at local libraries, park walks, downtown free Max rides, early morning mall walks, play dates....

Take care and all the best!

In vancouver, there is a place called cafe sip n play. For less than 5 dollars your dd (dear daughter) can play indoors for as long as she wants and you can sit and drink coffee/tea. It is a very family friendly place catering to children under the age of 5. We typically go after 3pm since then it is around 3 dollars or less.
