Safe TV Programing? Is It Out There?

I have two boys who are 7 and 6 years old. I monitor how much television they watch and how much they are on the computer. My trouble is monitoring which programs are appropriate. It seems that every cartoon and every show has something I don't approve of in it. With my boys they love to mimic. So if Ed Edd and Eddy call each other stupid so does my oldest. If Angelica calls the rest of the rugrats dummies so do my kids. It's either too violent or they call each other names. What shows would my boys be interested in that don't have these things in them? I have tried to just let them watch them and say, it's not real and I don't want you to repeat what they say and do. It just doesn't seem to work. I've even turned off the show due to them repeating something so they know I am serious. My oldest is NOT going to watch the "upside down room" (I think that is what it is) I've heard Ben 10 is fairly safe. They recently discovered Power Rangers and I am strongly against that! HELP!

What can I do next?

How about veggie tales. We love them. They have Christian msg. which doesn't do ANY damage and it's nondenominational. They also have 3,2,1, penguins. My 18 and 19yr. old STILL sing the songs! And so do there friends. You can go to the veggie tales web site, www.bigidea.com which will get them familiar with the characters and the games are all levels. The programs have CLEAN adult humor in some. Oh and we have been buying Muppet movies from the 80's. Good luck.

You watch a lot of PBS. I watch my niece (12) and nephew (7), and they too enjoy PBS. We also watch "Are you Smarter Then a Fifth Grader" on Fox on Thursday nights. I think the key is following your instincs. Kids are going to act what they see. I think that you have every right to be concerned about having your children watch shows in which the characters demonstrate disrespect towards eachother. We also watch a lot of Animal Planet and education shows. Good luck!

I feel the same way about the shows. I let my son watch ninja turtles and he ran around the house acting like he was punching and kicking everyone! He also loves to watch Caillou, Curious George, and The Bearenstine Bears (PBS channels). Those are the best cartoons I could find out there. Good luck!

There are a lot of safe things for kids to watch - mainly my youngest child - 8 years old watches PBS - Arthur, Dragon Tales, Clifford the Big Red Dog and George Shrinks are all family friendly shows which do not use derogatory words. They seem to have a message too about making this world a better place in which to live together! Check out PBSkids.org for listings of all their shows. Even my older boys - 13 yo twins will watch Arthur and some of the other shows. Good luck J.

I love, love, love the Backyardigans! My son literally stops in his tracks when they come on. Great show...I don't know for sure what channel they are...I think on Noggin and Nickolodeon, maybe?
