Safe Computer Game Websites for Children

We're grandparents adopting our 5 & 8 yr. old grandchildren. They were removed from their mother. We have to monitor her choices of computer games, TV, etc. She doesn't always use good judgement. We supervise ALL visits at her place or at ours.

Mother paid for and enrolled the almost 9 yr. old boy up for Club Penguin. We purchased a computer for them to play games on which we located in our dining room so it can be monitored. They are allowed 30 min. computer game time each night after homework is done. They get 1 hour on weekends. We know that's not a lot but the boy is extremely hyperfocused with TV and computer games. The little girl doesn't have this problem.

My question: Is Club Penguin safe for this age group? We don't won't Mom to be able to "Chat" or "Blog" with the kids but Club Penguin seems to have these options? What are the safest and unsafest websites for this age? We'd prefer free sites.

My girls also play on
iknowthat.com - it's free to play, but there are options with paid membership also so that you don't have to see the ads.

studyisland.com - this is through the school so I do not know if you can get on it without a username and password through the school. It's specifically for TAKS testing so your school may be able to give you that info.

My daughter is 5. She got her very own laptop for Christmas (yes, Daddy spoils her LOL). She has already mastered opening bookmarks for Nick Jr. and PBS Kids. And she's a pro at navigating the sites too. She LOVES them! She will play the games and also watch some episodes of the shows.

And she also knows how to open & play Angry Birds...LOL but that's not online and not free (I think it's still $5).

Oh, forgot to mention that the Nick Jr. & PBS Kids sites are very educational. I am always sitting near my daughter as she's playing & I can hear everything and I LOVE hearing how much stuff she is learning :)
