Safe Bug Repellant for 14-Month-old?

What bug repellant should I use on my toddler son? I've heard that it should contain deet. I'm concerned with him getting the repellant in his mouth as he likes to put his hands in his mouth and occasionally nibble on his arm. :) Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

You can buy the bug repellant braclets and put them around his ankle. They work great and don't run the risk of getting in eyes or mouth.

Teeny Towels makes little bug repellent wipes and you can carry them easily in your bag or even on a key chain they're made with natural oils that repel bugs. I think I found the Teeny Towels at One Step Ahead or on Amazon. They seem to work, even on me and they don't smell bad either.

The best that I have ever had is Sol-U-Mel mixed with Tough&Tender, Mela Magic and a few drops of Melaleuca oil! Works like a charm and will not harm the babies. We used it last weekend at the lake and no one got bit! I sprayed around the tent as well and we didn't even have any around. Let me know if you need to learn how to order the products.

At Bed Bath and Beyond they sell (or at least the did last year) little key chain things that make a high pitched sound that chase the bugs away. You can attach it to your little one's shirt. They also have green bracelet things but they are harder to keep attached to a todler. Last time I was in the store they were with the outdoor stuff.

Good Luck!

DEET is effective but very harmful! I have great luck with an herbal oil called Bygone Bugz from http://www.lakonherbals.com/. I've used this, and only this, on my son since he was a year old and have not had any problems with bites. Our whole family uses it! We don't even own a can of OFF.

Get a bug bracelet and put it around his ankle. You can purchase a 3 pack at walmart with the other insect repellents.

I had heard that it should not containg deet. As for around the house, 20 mule team borax powder ,(borax clothes washing powder) sprinkled in cracks and places helps with bug around the house and is safe for pets, as far as a spray on him if he went out to play I'm not sure which is best to use

I've always used Avon. They have some great deet free products and I love the sunscreen for kids with deet-free bug repellant in it.

You can ususally get them pretty darn cheap this time of year as well. It's the only thing I ever buy from Avon but it's worth the hassle for me.

if you want to stay chem free try tea tree oil. head to the health food store grab a little bottle of it (it is pretty in-expensive) and get a little spray bottle for a small bottle, you can pretty much count on 1-2 drops per oz. the smell takes some getting used to (not stinky but a little minty). this is what i used on myself and my bedding when i was in Iraq, i never had a problem with the bugs. good luck i hope this helps.
E.
p.s. its also good to put in a humidifier just a couple of drops will keep any mold or mildew out.

You can call your pediatrician and they will recommend one. I use the Avon line of insect repellent. Mostly because if you look on the back of the repellents they will say don't use before the age of 2. On the Skin So Soft repellent (which smells good also) you can use on babies as young as 6 months.

Hope this helps.

I have used the Bug Buttons. They work great. I pin it on the back of my son's shirt and on the canopy of my infants carseat. They work great for adults to. Everyone in our family uses them. You can reuse them over and over, just put them in a ziploc bag for next time. I found them at walmart, walgreens, and online at bugbutton.com. They were about $1 for 2 at walmart last year.

My pediatrician always recommended the Skin-So-Soft bug repellant sprays, and to apply it everywhere EXCEPT the hands and face, until the kids are old enough not to be putting their hands in their mouths all the time. Hope this helps!

I used the Avon sunscreen/bug repellent when we camp and our kids have been camping since 9 months old (ages 8 and 5 now). The Avon is really good at keeping those pesky no-see ums away as well..regular spray did not. No se-ums are mainly in Florida and are mosquitoe-like in nature, you just can't see them until they bite!!

I would also use regular bug spray on their clothes..bugs can bite through clothing sometimes if they are determined.

most of the ones at Whole Foods should be safe--they probably have ones especially for kids in the health/vitamin area. One brand is California baby.

Avon has a great product... Bug Guard Gentle Breeze. It is a cream for kids that is blue and dries clear, I have been using it on my daughters for years. It is safe for children all ages. My youngest is 2, I also use the pump and they love it. I'm a rep if you are interested in trying a tube. Good luck.
