My 8 week old daughter was just seen at her 2 month appt, and our ped discovered this. Next month, they are opting to do an MRI?!?!? Our ped orginally told us they would do ultra sounds. I received a call from the Medical Center here to schedule the MRI. When I contacted my ped, she stated, " the radiologist no longer does ultrasounds for this and only MRI's".........HELLO!!!! She is 8 weeks old....Now, her father and I are scared to death about putting her to sleep or drugging her to have this done. Don't get me wrong, I want to do what's right, but can anyone PPPLLLLEEEAAASSSEEE give me any feed back on this?????

LOVE,
CONCERNED PARENTS

What can I do next?

My 3 year old fraternal twin sons have a variation on a sacral dimple. It is actually more like extra skin and an extra crease at the top of their gluteal cleft. It kind of looks like a crooked "Y" at the top of their butt crack. They did ultrasounds in the NICU and said both boys' spines were fine. But when they were around 6 months old, they decided to perform an MRI on one of my twins, as he had a more pronounced anomoly than his brother. They wanted to rule out spina bifida. Anyway, they didn't find spina bifida, but they did see a "lesion" on his cerebellum, which two years later they suspect is a low-grade benign tumor. My little guy has to get MRI's every six months! He does fine with the sedation. He is super cranky when he wakes up though and it takes him the whole day to get back to his old self.

When my two year old had a MRI they just waited until he fell asleep. Clearly they were not thinking about drugging him but I don't think the doctor thought about how the tech was going to get a two year old to lie still for that amount of time. Luckily, they were patient and waited for him to nap.

Did the doctor say she'd need to be put to sleep or drugged?
Seems to me they can do a diagnostic procedure
without putting her to sleep or drugging her.
They might need to restrain her but that's a lot like swaddling.
Please don't let yourself get over-anxious unnecessarily.

There is no harm in getting a second opinion. Try a different ped., before going into the MRI appointment.

My daughter was born weighing 3 pounds and my husband and I noticed her dimple. The doc couldn't see in far enough to where it closed, but he said that it was probably nothing and that since she obviously had good movement of her arms and legs that we could just monitor it. Finally, at 2 yrs old, mainly to put my husband at ease about it, we had an ultrasound done...as we suspected, she's fine!

Is there a reason for the drs. to believe that it could be something other than just a dimple? signs that she may have spina bifida? If not then I would suggest getting a second opinion if you are really concerned about the MRI. But, if she has other symptoms of something more serious, then you may want to have the MRI and talk to the doc about the least invasive way of doing it!

Good luck! This is harder on you than it will be on your little one!

I totally understand your concern. I think you need to talk with the radiologist before the procedure and ask some more questions. You need to find answers to things like...will she even be put to sleep? At 8 weeks its possible that she can just be strapped in there and be fine. If she does need to be sedated, it would probably be for a very short period of time. Also ask why did he stop doing ultrasounds for this? Is it b/c the ultrasound didn't have as high of a detection factor? If so, then that's a good reason. You also need to know what percentage of patients who undergo the MRI have further complications and need further treatment. That could weigh in to whether or not you do the test. In the end, I generally trust the pediatricians that know whether or not this test is safe and called for, but you have every right to have your fears allayed and your questions answered, so it necessary, make a pre-MRI appt. with the radiologist, and I think it's important to see the radiologist rather than your regular Ped. to get these more specific questions answered. Hope it all goes well, whatever you decide!

**I also wanted to add that I just read Chantal's answer and that reminded me that my daughter had to have a CT Scan at 2 and they also waited for her to sleep, she never did, but that's a whole other story! The people doing these tests are used to doing them on kids and I think that they will probably go that route. The hosptial did EVERYTHING in their power to not drug my child and it worked. Have faith.

Sacral Dimples are usually harmless, and only rarely are indication of a problem. You can always ask "to wait and observe" if it becomes a problem before doing any scans.

Hi B.,

Our daughter was diagnosed with a sacral dimple and was given an ultrasound. Turns out she just had a dimple at the top of her bottom. I, like you, would be wary of all that goes into an MRI. Can you ask your ped. for a referral to a different radiologist who is willing to start out with the least complicated option possible. I mean if it isn't clear on the ultrasound then you could do the MRI, but I would think it I would want to do the ultrasound first. Is that an option? To go with a different radiologist?
