Round Ligament Pain Question

I'm pregnant with my second baby (22 weeks along). I've had strong round ligament pain with this baby ... at least that's what I've been told it is. Last night I think I must have pulled something and the pain seems much stronger. Is there something that can relieve the pain some? I'm looking for non-drug relief. Thank you in advance.

Mine were way worse the second time around and this is what helped me. More water than you ever wanted to think about drinking (LOL) for some reason it helped to stay very hydrated. And gentle heat. Those heating pads that are filled with beans or feed corn that you microwave for a couple minutes work great. A warm bath with some aromatherapy bath salts helped too.

A chiro who specializes in pregnant women can really help. I am not sure where you live but Lifetime Family in Hurst is great. Dr Cindy specializes in prenatal and pediatric chiro. I am not sure how it works but it works. I have very large babies and I would go in there feeling tired and huge and come out with a spring in my step. If you are not close to Hurst I am sure that Dr Cindy would recommend someone who is closer.

I forgot to mention its really inexpensive. My baby is 2 now so it may have changed a little but I was charged $30 a visit, my insurance doesn't pay for chiro.

Hope it helps

I used one of those supports that basically holds up your belly. Available at Babies R Us, Motherhood etc. It's kind of cumbersome during the summer because it's hot, but shouldn't be too bad with all this cold weather we're having. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Melissa Shelton is a great chiro at Preston and Hedgecoxe in Plano who sees lots of pregnant women and children.

Ken Piercy specializes in cranio-sacral and other light touch massage therapy techniques that would be perfectly appropriate during pregnancy. You keep your clothes on and stay on your back or side the whole time. www.kenpiercy.com

Accupuncture is great for pain relief when you don't want drugs in your system. I saw an accupuncturist during my last pregnancy for hip pain, and while I was nursing for back and neck pain. I like Iva Peck, and have heard good things about Alan Chen and Bunzo Takamatsu.

Good luck,

This might sound crazy, but it helps me to drink a lot of water. It doesn't make it go away completely, but it does relieve things. I think everything inside's just lubricated better and stretches better when you're well hydrated. I work full time and have a 2-year-old, so tend to go-go-go and not take time for something as simple as making sure I stay hydrated. And, as the other moms, said, try to relax when you can (I KNOW, easier said than done!). When RLP hits me, I try to lie down for 20 minutes and drink a big glass of water, and then I can usually get up and go on. GL!

Drs Jim Bob and Cindy Haggerton at Lifetime Family Wellness Clinic in Hurst use the Webster Technique to release round ligament tension. It is great! If you can't make it to Hurst, check around to see if there is a chiropractor in your area that uses the Webster Technique :)

I am sorry! I am 33 wks with #5 and have the same problem! Unfortunatly- it has gotten worse with each pregnancy for me! I haven't been able to find anything to take for the pain but I have learned what I can and can't do.
for example: I can't sit straight up out of bed or turn really fast. I have to roll over to my side, get my legs off the bed and then lever myself up with my arms. I have to be more diliberate in my movements because sudden movements- like getting up really quick or turning really fast- trigger it and then I can't move until the pain subsides.
If the pain is lasting a long time or just doesn't go away make sure you talk to you Doctor about it.
I am sorry that you are so sore! I know how you feel!
Good luck!

Neuromuscular massage therapy works well for this...it also involves some muscles on the upper thigh which attach to the pubic bone along with the ligament.
I do this work and have helped many pregnant women including my daughter who is on her third pregnancy.
If you are interested, email me. I am in NE Dallas.

Whenever I had RLP, it subsided after a few minutes. This was true with both my pregnancies. It hurt like heck for a few minutes, but then was gone completely. I suggest calling your doctor and asking about it to be sure that it is actually RLP.

Good luck!

You need to find a chiro that knows how to treat pregnant women. Not all will treat them. I went to one when I was pregnant with both of my sons and had very good results. I would recommend mine but it looks like you live a ways away go to Fort Worth! Good luck and God Bless!!!

I just had my second child (10/29). I had the same problem. I discovered if I lay down on my left side, it helped. Sometimes I laid there for 2-3 hours, sometimes just 15-30 min. The chiropractor helped and massages helped too. The important thing for me was to just relax (which is hard with an older child, I know). So, just think of things that help you relax...reading, baths, pedicures, manicures, TV, etc. Good Luck. I hope you feel better soon.

W.,
I would suggest spending some time, about 15 minutes several times a day in the knee chest position (butt up in the air, head and shoulders down as low as possible). This will relieve those ligaments and give them a rest.

Hope this helps. If anyone is interested, I am starting a new Bradley Method® series on January 18. Contact me to reserve your place today!

I am 21 weeks along with my 2nd child and have had strong RLPs this time too. The best relief I have found is from my chiropractor. A chiropractor can re-align your ligaments. When they are out of alignment it makes them hurt much worse. Also, my chiro showed me some stretches that help the ligaments feel better (to do when they are not hurting though). If you want to know who my chiro is, send me a PM.

I hope you find some relief!

I too had round ligament pain with my second child and it was quite painful. Sometimes a warm bath would help, but usually as soon as I got out the pain would be back. The thing that worked best was a heating pad. Good luck!
