Round Birthday Cake Pan

I am wanting to make my daughter's personal 1st b-day cake myself and I am having a hard time find a small round baking pan. I have looked at HyVee and Wal-mart and have had no luck. I also looked online at Target, Macy's, JC Penney, and Linens N Things and did not see that they carried them either. Has anyone else made a small cake for their son/daughter's b-day. My thought it to make a small layer cake, about 4 inches in diameter. I have seen round corning ware dishes that ere the size I want, but I have never baked a cake in a corning ware dish and did not know how it would turn out. I am open to all suggestions.
Thank!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advise. I looked around and here is what I found. Wal-mart and Michaels both carried the Wilton round cake pans. The smallest they had were 6inches, and Wal-mart was a couple dollars cheaper. Thanks for the hint to look int he craft section at Wal-mart. I will keep Micheals in mind, because they had a ton ofdifferent cake pan shapes for making cakes to go with every party! Additionally, if you want to spend more money and have a layered cake, Linens 'N'Things carries two 4 inch springform pans for 15.99. I decided not to go with them, but not for the money. I originally called them to see if they carried a 4 inch pan and they said yes and they had some in stock. I drove there and they could not find it on the shelf even though they had one showing in the system. I had given them my name and number to call incase they received a new shipment. An hour later when I got home I had a message on my machine that they found it, it had been placed in the wrong section. Their loss, was that I had already bought the pan at Wal-mart and did not want to go through any more hassel! Thanks again for all your advice!

I have a round one. My husband also makes deep dish pizza in it. You're welcome to borrow it, as odd as that may seem. We live in Manchester, east of 141, west of 270.

If you don't have a dedicated cake store near you, (we have Cake Stuff) try Michaels. They usually have an aisle of Wilton cake supplies and should have something that would work.

My daughter just turned 1 in June! I used a small Pyrex glass dish and it turned out perfect! I think it took a little less time because it was so small, but other than that, the cake looked great! I think the corningware ones you found would work great too. Good luck and have fun! :)

Check different Wal-Marts. The closest Wal-Mart to me does carry the very small round baking pans in the craft department with all the wedding stuff. Also, if you really cannot find it at Wal-Mart or any of the other places you mentioned, check Hobby Lobby; they will very likely have it as well.
If all else fails, bake a square cake and cut out a couple of 4-inch circles and layer them.

You can bake in corning ware, I've done it before. Just make sure you grease it so the cake comes out. Look for places that sell Wilton (the cake decorating company) products to find small cake pans--Hobby Lobby and Michael's are the easiest to find those pans. Good luck!

I like Karen Ann's on Gravois. It is a shop where they bake cakes, but you can also get cake pans and other supplies for decorating cakes. They have some really unique pans, so I would try there. (On the plus side- they are in the same little strip mall as Purple Cow resale for kids.)

I suspect Corningware would work just fine. For all three of our children's first birthdays, we simply used a small, glass, oven-safe mixing bowl. I greased and floured it just like you would a glass cake pan, but don't fill it over halfway. It works great and makes a nice little cake--just keep an eye on it while baking, because it won't take as long to bake as a larger cake, obviously! :-)

For my son's birthday, I baked a normal-sized cake. I then cut that in half and trimmed one half to the shape I wanted.
you'll just want to make sure you soften the icing before putting it on, since it will be a bit crumbly. the other half was perfect for the few grown-up guests we had.

We can get Wilton products at our Wal-mart. They aren't with the regular pans though...You get them in the craft department around wedding and cake decorating supplies. I've gotten a good heavy round pan there...It's a six inch pan I think. You can also get them at Michaels, or Hobby Lobby...

You can use a glass bowl or pan to bake in. I have a small corning ware dish that I have baked cakes in before. Have fun and good luck.

Hi T.,

The corning ware pan will work great. I have done this before to make "hamburger buns" for April Fools Day cakes. Just make sure to spray it with Pam and watch the timing. You could even make it ahead of time and freeze it. Cakes are easier to decorate after being frozen, even if just for a few hours.

I think a separate little cake for the birthday girl is a wonderful idea. Happy Birthday to your little girl!

Usually when I am making a specific shape for any of my family's birthdays I will just use an average round/rectangle, etc pan and cut down what I need. You could do that with an 8" or 9" pan and then trim it to what you need or even do rectangle 9 X 13 and then find the size of round cake you want and try to make it out of that size...you should be able to get to 4" rounds out of the 9 X 13. Good Luck

You could make a regular square/rectangle cake and then cut out the size & shape you want. Let it cool all the way first. I dump the cake upside down on wax paper before I cut it. If you put the icing in a bag & trim a very small corner, squeeze it out to cover the cake most of the way, first. Then just smooth it out with a knife. You may need to use extra icing for the cut edges, but the icing will be her favorite part anyway!

You can usually find one in the wedding supply things but are about the height of a 2 layer so you wouldn't have to worry about your layers sliding. Or try kids toys some have little metal cake pans, but if I used those I would sit them on cookie sheet to bake so as not to burn bottoms. Are you interested in baking it because you feel it will make it more special, or are simply interested in the size? For my daughter's first birthday, I thought I had to make her cake, so I made a huge sheet cake for everyone else and used a deep dish pie plate to make her cake. It was cute, but a lot of work! My son just turned one, I bought his cake at Wal-Mart and they gave me a little cake just for him! MUCH easier! Something to consider...
Best wishes on a memory that will last for you! (Not so much for her.) :-)

You need to go to a store specifically geared towards cooking/baking, like Williams-Sonoma, or Kitchen Conservatory (in Clayton & on Clayton Rd by I-170 & the Galleria Mall). Make sure whatever you buy, the two pans don't fit inside one another, otherwise the sides won't be straight! I asked for cake pans for Xmas one year & got pans likely from Wal-Mart that make cakes with slanted sides. A baking store will have every imaginable size as well. There's another store in Sappington, I think it's called Karen Ann's, something like that. It's on Gravios Rd, near Lindberg & I-270. Good luck!

Corning ware works fine. You would follow the baking instructions for a glass pan. Places you should check for a small cake pan are Michael's, Hobby Lobby, and Party City. They carry supplies for cake decorators and for wedding cakes. They also carry a good selection of paste food coloring for the icing.

Many of the other moms have mentioned Hobby Lobby or Michaels which would be a good place to look. If they are anywhere near the size of the ones in my area they will have what you're looking for. If you don't have one of those stores in your area, you can go to a cake decorating store. They will have what you are looking for. Just look in the yellow pages. Most of them are locally owned and will be more than happy to help you find what you need. If neither of those options work, go to www.wilton.com and click on Wilton Online Store. They have pans in about every size you can imagine. I use the 6"x3" to make a 1st birthday crush cake. No layering required. The 6"x2" would work if you want to stack 2 together to make a layer cake. Happy Birthday to your little one!
