Rotating Tylenol and Advil

Hi all. My daughter has febrile seizures so i am being diligent with alternating these meds every 3 hours around the clock for several days, as long as the fever lasts. I am feeling like this is ALOT of medicine to constantly be putting in my lo's body. Just need some reassurance from other moms that you too have done this and your kid is ok. Do you give this much medicine to your little one?

I have twin daughters that unfortunately took after me. I usually never got sick very often and still am that way but when we do get sick we spike those fevers up and my mom has told me she really thought there were times she was going to have to take me into the hospital.
Tylenol and advil roatation is the only way I can get my two daughters to break their fevers so no momma you are fine. Medicine of all kinds have their side effects but fever and the affects of it can be much more harmful to her than the medicine. You have to outweigh the benefits from the bad. I hope she feels better soon!

It is fine and my daughter has had a febrile seizure too. Just be sure you follow exactly the directions on each med in terms of dosage and timing of doses. One thing too is that you can actually purchase infant tylenol in suppository form...that's what they gave my daughter at the hospital when her temperature was 105...and it went down to 101 in 20 minutes. I got them at my pharmacy.

When my kids were teething, I rotated tylenol and ibuprofen round the clock for months. It is fine.

Advil can cause an upset tummy if it is empty. I've only used Tylenol and it has worked like a charm, but I have never used it for several days. At a certain point you need to let the fever do its job. Please talk with your dr.

It is okay to give your child these meds. But, it isn't rotating every three hours. Tylenol is dosed every 4-6 hours and motrin is every 8 hours. So you give them according to that schedule.

I usually try to avoid the meds for fever when I can since the fever is the body's way of fighting off the bug. We don't have a history of febrile seizures though, so that would be a good question for a pediatrician.

don't forget the lukewarm bath - that will bring it down instantly as well - and make sure she is drinking lots of fluids - this will help her fight the infection faster and you will not have to give the tylenol/advil as long.

How old is your daughter? If she has problems with seizures and you've been doing this alternation on meds for 3 or 4 days now, I'd take her to the Urgent Care place tomorrow.

I have done this twice with my son, but only when his fever was very high (102-104) and wouldn't go down or not down to the 99s/100s with just one med. I think the longest I've done it was maybe 2-3 days. Just make sure your doses are right. If you're doing this for longer than 3 days, then it's time to see the dr.

BUT - if her fever's only 100, I wouldn't bother with the alternation of tylenol/advil. At 99 and 100, the virus is just trying to fend for itself. I often will not give my child any meds unless it's higher than 100.0.

I also agree with cold/cool showers (15-20 minutes of her in your arms, with the cool water on her back and then on her chest and then on her side, etc.) I've only done this twice when the fever was at 104.

Yes! My DD spikes high fevers easily! It is nothing for her to hit the high 104s...we saw 105.9 a couple of weeks ago! We rotate meds every 3 hrs and set alarms to give during nighttime hours. We try to only alternate if the fever is in 103+ dept- otherwise we just use ibuprofen because it works better on her!

Yes, it's fine. My son had pneumonia last Christmas with a fever of 105. When I took him to the ER because the tylenol was not bringing it down they said I had to alternate and also give a higher dose than on the package with a fever so high. I would speak to your doctor though because I am not sure how old your daughter is. My son was 2 1/2 at the time.
