Hi, We are going to take our first road trip from Missouri to Sandusky, OH. Are there websites out there that suggest cool places to stop off along the way? Or do you have any suggestions on where to stop off? Looks like we will be passing through Illinois and Indiana. Thinking about stopping off at Indianapolis Zoo.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of your suggestions and ideas. Trip Advisor was extemely helpful. We ended up booking a one night stay at Holiday Inn South Indianapolis to get the family fun package that includes 4 zoo tickets and 4 children's museum tickets. Then we will spend two nights at the Baymont Inn and Suites South Indianapolis(found a great deal on priceline express for $45 a night and used a 10% coupon on top of that. Really looking forward to our road trip.

I would start with AAA - they used to have a GREAT travel map!!! I don't know if they still do...when we take road trips - we wing it!!!

AAA is good for that (and with membership you gets discounts at some attractions and motels) but then you can find local interests in Google Earth too.

When I'm planning a road trip I contact the tourism web site for each state we'll be going through. When the fliers/booklets come I peruse them and plan stops. I also google that states tourism sites and find even more places.

It takes a bit of work to find just the right thing for our family but it's worth it.

I think road trips are a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy yours.

Don't forget, plan some on the way there and some on the way back.

If you look at your map and see some key cities you'll travel through then go to www.tripadvisor.com it will show you places to visit, restaurant recommendations and hotel info. It is my favorite website to use when I'm visiting a new place. I've never been disappointed with the activities, hotels or restaurants and it has kept me from spending money at places that I thought looked good but got bad reviews. It is supported by travelers so there are no allegiances to any particular group.

Have a ball and safe travels.

When I plan a road trip I use www.mapquest.com for my route and plan from there. I can check out if there is anything on the way and not get off course. I also like it since I can pull up places to stay with our RV or places eat, etc..

Not sure how long you plan on being in Indianapolis but the Indy Children's Museum is not too far from the zoo and it is awesome. Great idea from Gamma G..maybe you could do one on the way to Sandusky & one on the way back home.

There is no better resource for this sort of thing than tripadvisor.com.
I've used it for years and honestly cannot imagine planning a trip without it.

Have fun!
