Ringing in Ears

Hi Mamas! For the last week or so, I have had high pitched ringing in my ears. My husband has a hearing impairment so I know that is a sign of hearing loss. My only catch is that it's only when I lay down for bed & put pressure on my ear (on my pillow). There's no ringing at all during the day or any other time.

Any guesses?

* I should add, I have cleaned my ears out & they seem to be squeeky clean...

What can I do next?

Ear ringing (tinnitus)is directly related to low adrenal hormone output. Specifically aldosterone which comes from the outer cortex.

Aldosterone can be tested via blood. Test aldosterone, renin, and electrolytes all at the same time, and do a 3 day salt fast before the test. Usually you would need to go to an endocrinologist for these tests.
Bring this with you to get your doctors referral to an endo:

'Cortef' is the replacement hormone and needs a prescription..

If it were me, I'd ask them to do a saliva cortisol test at the same time. (saliva- not blood, blood can give a false negative reading.) It would be likely that if you are low in aldosterone, you would be low in cortisol too..the other hormone that comes from the outer cortex.
The replacement for that is Hydrocortisone and can be obtained either prescription or otherwise online.

I have ringing in my ears going on second year now..I had an ear infection, and had ear ringing on that ear, and out of the blue, I couldn't hear for a day out of the other ear and now I have ear ringing there, too.At first I thought I would go crazy...and down loaded nature noises on my Ipod, that helped me sleep.Because like you, I noticed it the most at night and the reason is, everything is quite now and you are not distracted from the eveyday noises around you.....

I have had this since I can remember. Mine is caused by grinding my teeth, so you may also want to check with your dentist and see if you do this and need a night gaurd. There is not much anyone can do about it, it is permannent for me, but you can protect your teeth, if that is what is causing it. A fan at night is helpful.

I have had ringing in my ears (tinnitus) for a bit over 18 years NON-STOP. I am 36, it started a few weeks after my 18th b-day. It started in 1 ear & only at certain times, now it's in both and is all the time. It gets worst when I'm going to get my period and when I'm stressed. I went to an ENT who did bunches of tests. He found that I do NOT have a cyst on a nerve from my ear to my brain (my hearing as it turns out is way better than average), he corrected my deviated septum and sacs (I forget what they're called) in my nose, I quit ALL caffine ~ even asprin like Advil, I've taken herbal stuff. Nothing has worked. I hope you get some type of relief. If you find any, let us know! Good luck!

it sounds like tinnititus. IT could be worse because of this time of year, low humididty. Try a little benadryl at night to see if that helps. It works for me. Also try some saline spray in the nose. You may want to check your humidity level in your house. You may want to try a humidifier at night in your bedroom. Ears, nose, throat all go together. If this doesn't improve talk to your doctor. I also get vertigo once in a while.

There are several causes for ringing in the ears. I suggest you call your doctor and ask about it. One cause can be medication. I know aspirin can cause it. IF the cause is medication you want to get off of it right away because the medication can cause permanent damage.

Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is quite common. It can be a symptom of some other condition, but it could totally unrelated to anything else. I would suggest talking to you your doctor to see if there is any cause for concern.

I’ve had tinnitus for years, too. I notice that it’s the worst when my blood pressure is high. I do have mild hearing loss, but nothing noticeable outside of the hearing tests. My ear-nose-throat guy recommended taking over-the-counter Lipoflavonoids (available at walmart). They’re not cheap, but they did seem to help a bit. They helped, but I still dreaded trying to go to sleep at night because the ringing was so bad. He next had me try a treatment that was relatively new. I just tried to google it (unsuccessfully), so I’m afraid I can’t tell you what it’s called. It was a 6-wk treatment (covered by insurance, if I remember correctly). I have a terrible memory, so I can’t tell you what it was precisely… I want to say it was some sort of sonic treatment. It felt like tiny little bits of heat being applied at the surface on about 15 specific points on the outside of my ear. It was uncomfortable, but not painful. It worked amazingly well. The Lipoflavonoids may do the trick for you, but if not, you may want to ask your ENT about other options. Best of luck to you. I know that tinnitus can be *incredibly* frustrating…. Hang in there!

I have the same problem. Went and had my hearing testing and the results were normal. The audiologist suggested that caffine can cause tinnitus and recommended I look at how much caffine I was consuming. Also, she did say that the ringing is likely there all the time but I'm only hearing it at night when I'm not distracted. Because the ringing was keeping me awake at night she recommended we run a fan in our bedroom to help mask the noise. She said it's likely heriditary and if so, there's really no "treatment." I've actually adjusted to it and it only occasionally bothers me now. Good luck!
