Hi ladies!
I have a brown ring (like soap scum, but dirty) around the agitator of my washing machine since I washed some very dirty area rugs (gotta love mud!). Aside from scrubbing and scrubbing, is there anything you know that will remove the scum? Can I run an empty load with vinegar without hurting the machine? Thanks in advance for your advice.
Thanks for your replies! I tried the vinegar in the hot wash, but the ring was just above the water line, so it didn't get it all. I used scrubbing bubbles and it came off after two scrub downs. I am guessing it was soap scum that just got dirty since it came off with the bubbles, and not part of the backing- thankfully it was not a sticky rubbery residue!
I would try the vinegar first. If you are concerned about running your washer on empty throw in a couple old towels they may help scrub the scum off.
Are you sure it's not rubber from the back of the area rugs? I washed and dried (no heat) an area rug and it left some kind of sticky brown rubber residue in the machines. I was able to rub/scrape it off with an old cloth but if that doesn't work then you could try Goo Off and then run some old rags or towels.

We just order on line AFFRESH tablets for washer cleaner and has besides power puck tablets a Grit Grabber cloth to remove residue on the rubber seal.

Try one of those soap scum removers like the "scrubbing bubbles". Not sure if your agitator is plastic. Make sure the soap scum remover you try does not harm plastic if it is.
I run the machine empty with some ammonia in it.
