Right Breast Killing Me

two days ago I was nursing my 10 month son and my right breast felt like he wasn't latched on properly and so I tried again...and just fed him whether it hurt or not. I have never had any problems with him latching or any kind of sore breasts. I have had a fever for a day now and my breast continues to be very painful. To look at it you wouldn't know there was a problem. I do not run to the doctor over much of anything. Has this happened to anyone else?
I am adding this on.......
I do feel a sort of lump on the under side of my breast also.
My baby boy recently had a fever and a bad teething spell and wouldn't hardly eat, could that be the cause

What can I do next?

Go to the doctor ASAP. If you cannot be seen today get to the ER. You will likely have mastitis and need an antibiotic ASAP. Do not wait!

Hi there, when my daughter was about 4 months, I had this problem. I couldn't get anything out of my right breast and it was soo sore. It felt like she wasn't getting anything out and was getting frusterated. The next day, I was visibly red in lumps all the way up.. and hard and heated to the touch.. Later that day, I developed a fever of 101.8. I went in the next day to the doctor to get antibiotics for mastitis. It cleared up within a few days.. I applied warm compresses.. and kept feeding her even though it was uncomfortable. I layed facing the bottom of the tub in very hot water and kind of kneaded that breast down... and then fed her afterwards..I think this helped tremendously. She's almost a year, and I'm still breastfeeding.. H. this helps, let me know!

Hopefully you've seen the Doc now, fever is nearly always a sign of infection. I had the same thing when I nursed my son, I always remember (as we all thought it was so funny) they gave me antibiotics and also told me to put cabbage leaves in the freezer and then inside my bra, supposed to help with the pain, smelt terrible but it felt good:-) Feel better soon:-)

Hello H., you need to go to a doctor right away because you have an infection called mastitis which is common in nursing mothers. It seems your milk ducks infected, you need to be on antibiotics which will clear it however you need to contunie nursing your baby on that breast even thought it hurts. I had that happened to me more than one occasion so I know what it is. I H. you feel better soon and I know how painful that can be. Be proud you gave your son the best gift any mother can give by giving your milk and nursing him :)

Hi there - have you talked to your doctor about it? It sounds like Mastitis to me. It happened to me too and it was painful. I then developed a fever and my left breast looks reddish compared to my right. I went to the doctor and found the lump as well (but the lump is due to blocked milk duct). Got antibiotics and was all better.

Good luck!

If you haven't made it to the doctor yet, something else you can try in the meantime is changing your baby's nursing position. I had a clogged duct (noticeable lump, very tender to the touch and sore all over the breast) with my daughter also around 10 months and by changing her from a cradle hold to a football hold for just one feeding it cleared out the duct. Generally if you can get their nose pointing towards the clogged duct it will help clear it out.

RUN don't walk to the doctor. I had mastitis and since I didn't know what it was, it became an abscess (pocket of infected pus, gross huh?). Abscesses have to be surgically drained & I ended up with low milk supply. PLEASE don't ignore this! Most likely you will only need an antibiotic but you should have them examine it to check for absess since its been so long. good luck

Yes, go to the doctor! I had mastitis and ended up with a fever of 104.7. Not a good feeling.

Sounds like the start of mastitis to me. I agree with the warm compresses (moist if possible) and keep feeding baby and drink tons of water yourself. If a fever starts, a trip to the doc will probably be necessary.

I agree also that it sounds like mastitis....so you need to see your doc asap. The other thing I wanted to add is that you need to keep nursing or pumping on that side even though it's painful. That will help keep the mastitis to a minimum.

call you OB. Breast soreness + fever could be mastitis. It's important to keep breastfeeding as the flow of milk will help pretty much whatever the issue is, but definitely cal your OB to discuss the situation.

Sounds like a clogged duct. If he was having a hard time nursing before, that is probably what is is. Go to your dr. to get checked though b/c this happend with me a few weeks ago and it QUICKLY turned into mastisis. If you arent keen on dr. then try switching your nursing positions and pump frequently.
