Rhaspy Voice

My son is eight months old, about 2 1/2 weeks ago I thought he was coming down with a cold because his voice was very rhaspy. I could tell when he would cry or talk (you know baby mumbles) regardless it was not a cold because there were no other symptoms. But I am concerned because his voice now two weeks later is still very rhaspy. Does anyone think that I should be concerned that maybe his vocal cords are damaged or should I call the doctor? Has anyone else experiences anything like this?

What can I do next?

Hi Aleisha,

My daughter once had something like that that seemed to go on forever. She didn't seem sick at all but just sounded like she was loosing her voice all the time. I took her to the doctor and in her case he said she had some post-nasal drainage in the back of her throat probably left over from a virus. We gave her lots of fluids and she was fine. Since its been going on for a while with your son, I think I would check with his doctor. With the crazy spring weather and all of the colds and stuff going around right now its probably something related to that, but if you have him checked you won't have to worry anymore. Good luck and I hope it gets better soon!

There doesn't have to be anything wrong just because his voice is raspy, my daughter was like that for months and then it grad. went away.

My little guy is 12 1/2 months (10 1/2 corrected) and he's been dealing with the same thing. No fever, no snotty nose, no cough. I started to get more concerned last week because my husband has strep throat...but there's still no other symptoms. We've decided it's because he's learned how to do yells and other strange sounds, in his throat, if you can understand that lol. I think he's just over-used his voice, doing different noises.

When is your child's next doctors appointment? If it's within the week then I wouldn't be so concerned. If it's another two weeks away it wouldn't hurt to call and just ask the doctor his/her opinion on the situation. You may not even need a visit.

If child doesn't seem to be sick and has no other problems and post nasal drip is ruled out, then I would check vocal cords. My neice had same problem and at 5 still does. She has nodules on her vocal cords, she is in voice therapy and speech therapy and sees an ENT for follow ups.

I agree with both moms. It sounds like post nasal drip. Which there isnt much they can do about it. However I would just put a call in to the doc and mention it just to see what they say. Try plenty of fluids too. I mean the nasal fluid goes into his tummy and he can probably taste it in the back on his throat. So fluids will make the taste go away and help his tummy if he is feeling "queezy" (not that we can really tell at 8 mo!)
Good luck!
