Reusing Car Seat

I read a responce to a request about replacing car seats. And it said something about the foam in the car seats. I am using my 3 year old son's car seat for my new born (now 5 months old). Some of the foam in it is broken off on it. Should I get another infant seat?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have decided to use our 2nd Alpha Elite convertable seat for Bryant. We bought 2 for Kendrew. One for each car. I didn't know it could be put backwards. Thank you all. We were thinking about getting the Graco Turbo Booster for Kendrew. He's only 3 and growing out of the convertable car seats.

This just happened to my daughters car seat and we bought her a new one...it is the foam that is on the sides of the seat, right? I only bought a new seat b/c I was afraid that if I got into an accident her head could hit the unprotected side. Good luck!

If it were me, I would replace it. If cost is an issue, there is a program at Cook County Hospital where you can get a brand new car seat really cheap. I heard about this after I had gotten my car seats, but the nurse at Rush said it is open to anyone. I found this information on line, you could try giving them a call.

Yes!!! The foam is what protects the baby. If there were any missing at all, I would get another carseat ASAP!!!! You wouldn't have to get an infant seat. You could get a convertible carseat. Your 5 month old should be old enough to use one. They have some reasonably priced ones at BRU, Target and WalMart. We have a Cosco seat and we love it. I got it second hand from my brother, so I know it's durable. It wasn't one of the really expensive ones either. I know it was less than $100.

Hi Deeona,
I have a neighbor that is a fire fighter and he told us that you need to replace your car seat every 5 years. It's b/c the foam molds to your child as long as they are in it and the plastic wears away. Not safe at all. I know it gets pricey but I don't take chances.
Good Luck,
K. :~)

If this were my carseat, I'd get another one. I wouldn't feel comfortable taking any chances with a compromised product, especially if something were to happen.

You might be able to purchase a replacement cover from the manufacturer. That is, assuming the foam and cover are one piece that fits into the seat.
I do agree on the convertible seats. Love our Eddie bauer/cosco 3 in 1. Super walmart and albeebaby.com have good prices.

things to look for is when the seat is rear facing can you reach the lever or button that allows you to adjust the straps winter coat season proves it very necessary to continually adjust the straps

With most everything I reuse, but I never felt comfortable reusing carseats. I would get a new one just to be safe.
