Returning to Work - Does It Get Easier?

Hi everyone! I recently posted a returning to work question and got some really good responses...But rather than getting easier, it seems to be getting more difficult. I was home for 2 hours last night before we had to put our daughter to bed (doctor's orders to try to minimize night terrors). The entire time they were home, it seemed to be a constant struggle (she's 2). If my 2 yo wasn't crying, then my 4 1/2 month old was. I'm totally sleep deprived and despite the fact that I love my career, I'm feeling immense Mommy guilt! Does this get easier? I've been back at work for 1 month.

What can I do next?

Hi V.,

I hate to be honest, but I didn't think it got any easier. I thought it was horrible and I always wanted to stay at home. I was a pharmaceutical rep, making very good money. Finally, one day I decided that was enough and my children were suffering, so I quit.

Currently I do some consuting for a medical company at home, but it isn't solid work. It is only when I am needed. I have been in the pharmaceutical industry for over 15 years and found this job; however, jobs like this are far few and in between. I heard about a new company about 3 years ago. I was very skeptical at first and I wish I had listened to my friend 3 years ago when she told me about this opportunity. It came back into my life about 3 months ago and I'm so glad I listened to my colleagues from my Pfizer job. It is such an awesome job and the investment is very minimal. You don't have to sell stuff, you don't have to have inventory. Plus, I had lots of friends who were involved and doing great. I am making great money and I am staying home with the kids. This business has not taken off in San Antonio - it is a prime opportunity. Johns Hopkins University reports that you should be involved in a business before 1/2 of 1 percent of the population is involved. Right now, we are 1/2 way there. Let me know if you want more info. It was so hard for me to go back to work after having my son so I found a daycare close to my job and I have lunch with him almost everyday. It has made a HUGE difference for me.

I can't speak from experience really since I only have one right now but I can imagine that everything is hard right now with 2 kids that are both so young. So I think the guilt is what is easiest to focus on- your mind wants to blame returning to work for all your hardship when really you are bound to have some tough times with a tiny infant and a toddler. I know that night terrors can be awufl- my neice had them. I think that the sleep deprevation makes everything worse too. Just keep your chin up and try to get any extra sleep you can. I think when you are a little more rested and can find the right routine things will get a little better. Hang in there- I know it can be hard to go back to work but I also know some of us don't have a choice.

Don't worry- sometimes things get worse before they get better but they will get better.

Yes it gets easier. Everyone has to adjust to Mommy going back to work. My 3 year old daughter started acting out at school and home to get attention. She became jealous when I would nurse my 4 month old etc. We finally have a routine when we come home and that has helped a lot. IT took me about a month to figure out what worked best for the kids and myself. I have been back at work for about 2 motnhs. Good Luck.

i have a 17mth old and a 5mth old. it is hard, but does get easier (some nights)! We have noticed a BIG difference when mom or dad is gone for even a night though. Just keep things consistent (whatever that is for your family) and it SHOULD get better....saying that we had a rough time last night, but as a whole it is much better :) :)
