Retaining Water

My feet/ankles have been swollen for 6 days now. Some days they are worse than others, my left more than my right. I am not dehydrated, no major changes in diet (salt intake, etc).

I have been travelling but my last trip was last Friday. My feet have only been swollen like this in the last weeks of my pregnancy--definitely not pregnant now. Of course, on long flights I occasionally get some swelling, but nothing like this--I don't even retain much water before/during my period. I have been elevating, consuming adequate water, and exercising my feet and legs while at my desk.

Ideas? Thoughts?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went to the doctor today. He doesn't think it is a blood clot, but I will go for a doppler on Monday to be sure...assuming it doesn't get any worse this weekend. After that is ruled out, we'll start looking for other problems.

Good morning A.....something that is real good for water retention is drinking some corn silk water.....if you can find some corn on the cobs....when you take off the husks that hair like things is the cornsilk.....All you do is boil it in some water and drink it all day long.....girl, it will make you go to the restroom....some stores sell the corn silk in packages.....you can look in the spice aisle or in the mexican product section....you more than likely can find it La Fiesta Supermarket or any mexican meat markets....it doesn't have a bad taste at all...taste like corn...hahaha!....well, hope you can give it a try.

A., I agree with Carla here, GO TO THE DOC! It may just be simple water retention or it could be something more, this happened to my Aunt who at the time was 35 turned out she has congenitive(sp)heart failure, poor blood circulation. She is doing fine now she just has to take a pill everyday. Still active still travels wonderful woman. I hope this is not what is going on with you but in this case I think it is better safe than too late.

if you have been up on your feet alot this will cause this. how are you feeling? if you feel great then just take one of those diuretic pills to try and get some of the swelling down(like one of those you take before your period, its ok--your doctor is just going to give you the same thing--if it doesn't go away VERY soon after this(like a couple of days)then see your doctor, you may have some underlying problem that needs attention...

no idea as to the cause, but try eating watermelon and cantelope. they are both natural diuretics and should help with the swelling. goog luck!

Go to the Doctor. It may sound alarmist but that is not right. You may have a blood clot. This happens to my Grandma's legs when she gets one. You have been travelling. I would make an appointment immediately. Sorry to alarm you.

A.,
I would definitely go to the doc to rule out things such as a heart problem, diabetics, blot clots. Sometimes water retention could be the first symptom of something very harmful to you. It could be a variety of things, some not harmful at all, but it is best to make sure. Normally it is easily treated w/ a diuretic, changes in your diet, exercise, etc. but just rule out the harmful things first by going to see your doc. Good luck!

Hi A.! I've had this same issue at various times -- long trips in the car, airplane flights, or last term if pregnancy. But just recently I've had swelling in my lower leg, especially my feet and ankles -- and I can't figure out why. I sit ALOT at work, and even at night I work ALOT on my computer. I did see a doctor last week. We discussed my diet -- he said no salt (I don't even like salt), I mentioned that I drink more dietCoke than I probably should. He took my blood for testing, it all came back just fine. The bottom line was to drink more water, back off of salt, and he even wanted me to wear compression hose or socks. I've not worn the socks yet, but would like to try it. My swelling has gone down alot, but my ankles seem to remain that way. Good luck to you, I know how you feel.

Cranberry juice is a natural dieuretic (can't spell that one-sorry) and you can have cran-grape or cran-apple or any variety. Try a glass and see if anything happens. I can completely sympathize!

I'm in my 50's and am overweight. I have experienced swollen feet/ankles, especially on my left. I would notice it when I had taken in more sodium. It would help when I elevated the leg and drank loads of water.

I've had several symptoms that would point to me having diabetes (which is very much in my family) but no diagnosis. I do have high cholesterol and have been diagnosed with liver disease.

As soon as I got off of sugars and flours my symptoms dramatically improved. Now I'm also getting regular massages and exercising. And I pray to the great Physician too. :-)

Just googled "swollen left leg" as I have in the past and there seems to be a lot of women having this health concern and many possible causes. Seems many spent time and money with doctors and tests and still have the problem. Besides the possibility of blood clots, some of the suggested or "diagnosed" answers were...cholesterol blocking the arteries, diabetes, liver disease, and left kidney congestion. Someone even suggested getting off of flour so one can eliminate better. I pray you'll gain the wisdom you need along with the courage to make any changes.

Hi A.,
you did not mention if there was any redness around the ankles or feet.
With my experience with Edema- I would say that you need to be checked and as soon as possible. There could be some underlying reason for the swelling. If you have to fly with your job- I would also suggest that you try to get the first row behind first class so you will have a little moreleg room and can stretch your legs- or possibly elevate them some.
Good luck and blessings

We have a ton of salt in our soil around here. It gets in the water. I found that if I drink bottled water it helps keep the swelling down when it's an issue. It could also be a health issue. Diabetics have that problem when their kidney's are not functioning fully. Go see a doctor just to be safe.

Hi A.,

It sounds like it you would really benefit from a lymphatic massage. When lymph flow is enhanced, toxic & infectious materials, as well as excess bodily substances like water & protein are removed more effectively from tissues. This supports the immune system & helps rid the body of wastes that can increase pain or cause fatigue. In scarred or otherwise injured areas, damaged cells & inflammatory wastes can be moved out, helping to speed healing. Here is a quick link to learn more: http://ezinearticles.com/?Lymphatic-Massage---The-Benefit...

I would go to a qualified lymphatic massage therapist. I recommend that you go to Kathy Kraft, RN, RMT, CLT-LANA. She taught an intro to lymphatic massage class that I attended. She is great and very knowledgeable. Here is a link to find her bio and contact info: http://www.austinlongevity.com/alc_staffbios.htm#kathyk

I hope this helps!
