O.K. This is a very embarrassing topic for me. I had my daughter at 41 and I will be 44 next month. So I think some of my hair loss has come from age but after I had her my hair fell out consistently for 2 years and stopped when she turned 2 now I am left with half the hair I had.I have thin hair and breakage to begin with but now its hard to do anything with but put it up. I have had it trimmed a couple of times to promote growth but that hasnt happened.I also have gray hair coming in now in places (happened after birth) so I dye it as well. I am looking to either have it cut short(now shoulder length) or can I get a weave of some kind? I dont think I am ready to go to a wig,I am thinking that maybe too uncomfortable.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what salon might be a good one to go to thats not too expensive and can give me help on how to get my hair to grow back or ways that I can beef it up a bit. The volumizing styling products dont work unless you have some hair to work with. I literally have as much hair as my daughter who is 2.5. No bald spots though........Thank God! Any suggestions I am grateful for!

Hi S.. quit being embarassed and talk to your doctor before you do anything else! Hair loss can be a symptom of many imbalances in your system...so before you spend money on a weave or wig or any more hair color talk to your doctor!! Best wishes!

S.,
I had my son at 39 and I swear it was a few years before the hair loss stopped! I still have little "baby hair" coming in around my forehead hairline! My stylist told me that washing everyday and tightly pulling it back/up were the two worst things to do! Also, since your hair is shoulder length (like mine was) it is very noticeable in the drain, etc.
It's probably too far but there is a salon in South Park called Shear Grace that is all about healthy hair. They are very reasonable.
Otherwise, I would suggest a multi-vitamin every day and wash your hair every other day (less frequently IF you can get away with it). If you pull it back or up, make sure you do so loosely. Use a good nourishing shampoo and a product that pumps it up before styling. Good luck. I think it WILL lessen as time goes on (seems like forever). Do you color your hair? I've found that the color-boosting shampoos seem to "pump up" my hair. Skip the conditioner if you can, it may just weigh it down and result in limp hair. Good luck to you!

I'm sorry you're struggling with this. It is normal to lose a lot of hair starting shortly after childbirth. While pregnant, the growth hormones prevent much hair from being lost, and then once the hormones shift after delivery, all that hair that would have been lost during pregnancy starts coming out plus the normal daily hair loss. Since you do say you have gray hairs since the pregnancy, it seems to me that you are experiencing at least some new hair growth. However, it seems like what you are experiencing is more severe than most women experience.

My first recommendation would be to talk to your doctor. As others have mentioned, your thyroid should definitely be checked, but there may be other underlying medical issues that are causing the hair loss. I think it's probably best to start with any possible medical concerns before turning to extensions or weaves which are actually likely to further damage your hair. Certainly vitamins and certain types of shampoos may be helpful, but I would definitely work on treating any potential causes as well.

Good luck!

I agree with Terri, it may be a vitamin deficiency. There are also hair growth vitamins that you can buy in a health store. It wouldn't hurt to try. I did back in high school when I wanted Big Hair!

Also, my mom had 6 children and loss a ton of hair after the 6th child. She eventually went to the Dr. and they realized it was a thyroid problem causing the hair loss. It was completely unrelated to the pregnancies. After medication, her hair grew completely back!

Good luck!

My sister had a problem with thinning hair too. Our friend is a hair stylist and recommended a product called Nyoxin (not sure of spelling) you can get it at the salon at wal-mart. It's kind of expensive, but it does work!

In addition to having your hormone and thyroid levels checked, you should ask for a blood test to check your B-12 level. All three of these can affect hair regrowth after a pregnancy.

Hi S., just wondering if you have had your thyroid checked since you have had your daughter? I had the hair loss and other things also. I do know that the thyroid can do this. If it isn;t that maybe there is a supplement that you could take to help your hair grow back. Good Luck.

I think you should see a doctor...it could be hormonal. But, worth asking a professional.

make sure to have your hormone levels checked. sometimes that it why hair can fall out. do not wait until it is too late.you could be suffering form alopecia and the only way you will know is if you go to the doctor. another thing that is good for you and will help is to take fish oil or flax seed pills. a good shampoo which is good for hair loss is nioxin. it is sold in salons and is kind of expensive but is supposed to help. In all honestly before you do anything else have your hormone levels checked. if you have insurance go to the doctor about it.

I am thinking you might want to check with a doctor about this. You might have a hormone deficency or maybe a vitamin deficency of some kind. Although, I remember losing some hair during pregnacy, I don't think it should have not grown back by now. Good luck with this. I can imagine it is a difficult thing to go through.

I don't know what color your hair is, but I really love those choppy whispy shortish (sort of between short and shoulder length) hairdos on people with fine hair. A lot of models have it right now, and I fell like if my hair got any thinner (it's already pretty thin) I'd get one of those. If you go to a "good" salon-you may have to do an expensive one the first time until you know what you're doing, then you can switch to cheaper for upkeep-and explain your issue. A nice stylist (an older one preferably with mature hair herself-or a guy) should be able to give you advice for the right color and cut to maximize your hair. Look for pictures in magazines for some examples you like too to bring along and ask advice, they will also know if weaves would be a good option. You may even ask for an appointment, and then just have a consultation and offer to pay etc. and see what happens. I recommend doing something gradually, like first edge into the cut, then maybe add color on a different appointment or vice versa...nothing is worse than jumping off a cliff and getting everything at once and hating it. Especially if you don't know the stylist well. Good luck-your situation may still improve, my friend (age 39 at the time)took four years of shedding and thin hair-she gave up, and then it got better.

S.,
You probably have tried everything I am about to say, but if not you defiantely should. Have you tried prenatal vitaimins & biotin(you can buy at the health food store). Also there is medical treatments covered by almost all insurances. You can go to the Dermitologist & have steriod injections to boost hair growth also oral steriods. I know alot of times weaves & extentions actually promote hair loss because the tend to be heavy, so make sure you go to some one who defiantely knows what they are doing. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!

I would look into getting your hair cut. A shorter cut will weigh your hair down less and promote body. By using hair products meant to lift and thicken your hair you may be able to get that appearance of thicker hair that you are looking for. I would go to a reputable salon and see what they can do for you while waiting for all of the other options posted to work.

I just got my hair cut short and I have been told it has taken 5-10 years off of me. My hair looks thicker than it ever has.

Good luck.
