Hi all-I am a stay at home mom to 2 kids ages 4 and 2.We may be relocating to Lancaster and I keep reading good things about the Hempfield school district. If I could just get some feedback about the area for a stay at home as far as things to do,shopping convience,Pre-k,parks,library functions, etc I would really appreciate any input anyone wants to put out there. How long does it take to get to Rt 30-where I see Costco, target etc..Thanks in advance for any replies-we are really trying to narrow down an area of Lancaster with good schools but still close to highways and shopping etc...

What can I do next?

I'm in Hempfield too, with a Columbia address off of Prospect Rd. Hempfield covers a large area of the county and you should have no trouble finding a home in the district.

If you are close to Route 30 you can pretty much get anywhere in the rest of the county w/in 20-40 minutes. Hempfield is west of Lancaster city. My husband works in Lancaster City but could commute to either Philadelphia or Baltimore.

Costco is a on the other side of the city from us, BJ's Wholesale is closer. For Target I drive to the one in York County, west across the river, it is closer and less tourist traffic.

Hempfield has a preschool through the school district which is good - I sent my son there. This year he attends a preschool through a Pediatric Rehab center that is integrative with disabled kids and typical kids and he LOVES it. It is very affordable.

I have relatives who have had trouble with the East Petersburg Elementary school, I've hear good things about Landisville Primary School. My own will go to Mountville, however we plan to move this year - my guess is we will stay in Hempfield school district and probably West Hempfield Township.

For shopping the Park City mall is about 10 minutes down the highway, and we have 2 big outlet centers on Route 30 east of Lancaster city. They are close enough to shop at - especially go during the hours that are slow tourist wise - and since we are on the other side of the city we don't have to deal with all the tourist traffic. Hempfield has 2 parks my 5 year old loves: Mountville and Amos Herr in Landisville.

Find a mom's group to join so you can make friends. There are a lot of "transplants" here.

I grew up in the Lancaster area+loved it. Just a FYI about another area... I live in Donegal school district now and it will be going through lots of growing pains -too many children in this area w/ poor state planning -stay away from this district. But Elizabethtown and mount Joy libraries have wonderful programs and would be close to Hempfield if/when you move there.

Hempfield school district is a good school district, but it is BIG. I don't know what types of school you are used to, but it is a large school district. Very good arts programs- art, music, even dance (which isn't so common in schools around here)! Solid academics scores (go to schoolmatters.com to get info in the school district- or any school district for that matter) Both of my cousins went to Hempfield and they were both very much into sports, so I know they have a good sports program also. In Hempfield you are close to everything via route 30- much easier to get around than if you are living at either extreme of the county. (I live farther north in the Warwick school district, but grew up in Lebanon County area)Hope this helps!

Hi T.,

My oldest is starting kindergarten next week at Mountville Elementary in Hempfield school district and I've heard nothing but good things. I think it is rated as one of the best in Lancaster County. I live off the prospect rd exit of 30 which makes it easy to get anywhere. I can make it to Park City in about 20 min, York, where I grew up, in about 30 min. As for parks, Mountville has a big park, and Manor Church, which is less than 5 minutes away from me, just put in a great playground called Daniel's Den. I'm also a stay at home mom and have a 2 yr old. We do toddler gym during the school year for free at 2 churches within 10 minutes of the house and every other Fri we go to storytime at a library in Hellam which is about 20 minutes away. My only real complaint is during the summer the York libraries have a better summer reading program than Lancaster does. Other than that I think I'm pretty close to a lot. In fact, the house next door to us if for sale. The wonderful neighbors we had got relocated to North Carolina. If you'd like to check it out the address is 3948 Birchwood Ln, Columbia, PA and it is listed under Remax associates. The address is Columbia, but it is Hempfield school district. Good luck with your decision!
