Reoccurring Hot Tub Rash

I was in two different hot tubs once Fri and once Sun(both public). NOW I have MAJOR hot tub rash. So it itches, hurts and is very uncomfortable especially in my bra line. This issue seems to occur everytime I take a bath or use a public hot tub. We have a jacuzzi bath tub in our home and I take maybe a bath every other month. My husband gets upset because I dont take one more often but when you end up with bumps that hurt you avoid the issue. So does anyone have any idea how I can still take jacuzzis at home and not get this.
As a precaution I always clean all surfaces with soft scrub with bleach before each bath. I put at least a cup of peroxide in my water and from advise of a dr I use HIBICLENS® the antimicrobial, antiseptic skin cleanser.
We remodeled out bathroom and put this tub in so I could relax and take bathes. But now I rarely take a bath because I dont want to deal with these sores for days after use.

What can I do next?

I do not take that many. Have you tried taking Benadryl before or after you have taken a bath in a hot tub or it could be heat rash.

Have you tried it without all the chemicals? I'm wondering if the bleach and all the other stuff you're using could be causing the issue. Cleaning with simple baking soda and vinegar is just as good and it's much healthier. Spray the tub with a 1/2 & 1/2 white vinegar mixture, then sprinkle with baking soda and scrub, rinse clean. And as far as the skin cleanser goes, have you tried a more natural soap? Try using a plain glycerin soap - no dyes, no fragrance.

Hi M.,

I'm thinking there is a change that the bleach and soft scrub could be irritating your skin. I've used a tanning bed once that I got a rash in when I left. Come to find out I was allergic to the disinfectant cleaner. Now when I go I spray down the bed with water and wipe it away after they've cleaned it. You might want to run warm to hot water through the tub and sides. I've heard using vinegar and baking soda is just as good on just about any service. Try it on a small spot so you can tell if it might ruin it. It's worth a shot. Hope this helps so you can enjoy a wonderful and relaxing time.

Do the bumps look like little blisters with a red center? If so it is possible that you are getting a staph infection. The same thing happened to me. We replaced our filter and dumped the water and completely cleaned the hot tub. Also, make sure that you have two filters for your hot tub and change and clean them often. The problem isn't in the tub but in your filtration. If it is in your home tub, talk to the people who manufactured your tub on how to completely clean the lines and do so often. Maybe a bleach solution to run through the tub.
Hope this helps. Also, if you have another outbreak, go to the doctor and he can give you some medicine to help.

Sounds like an allergy. I agree with the other ladies about the bleach. I am allergic to bleach so I have to wear gloves, etc. if I use it.
Also, we own a hot tub and clean it out often (drain it, add new mineral cartriges, etc.). It is possible the public ones only keep adding chemicals and rarely replace the water. Hopefully, you will find a solution and can enjoy a nice long bath soon!
P.S. I used to have a similar rash, but it was caused by shaving with a hand razor instead of an electric razor. Also, I found out that I have food allergies that manifest themselves in skin rashes. I made a few nutrition changes and the rash has not appeared in month! (I also regularly take Claritin). Hope this helps!

I'd bet that it was dry skin, try using a moisturizer after you shower the chlorine off your skin. The best thing I've found for the dry skin is Neutragena Rain Bath, you put it on while your still wet from the shower, then towel dry, it keeps your skin so soft. My daughter had rashes as a child and was told she had dry skin, they even gave her a prescription for a moisturizer, her problem was bad enough that the lotion would burn until you got enough moisture on it and rubbed it in. Try using something for dry skin, I'd bet its that more than an allergy to anything in the hot tubs.
Also Avon makes a product called Simply Delicate that can be used wherever you have chafing, I use it when I start getting a rash at my bra line, it's leaves a smooth feeling on your skin and helps with bumps or rashes. The bottle says to use on inner thighs, bikini area, under arms and breasts. A soothing Anit-chafing gel. Also I am sensitive to a lot of soap so I use Neutragena's Bath soap, fragrance free. Hope you find something that helps!
