Hello,

We will soon be relocating from Philadelphia to the Westlake, OH, area for my husband's job. We know nothing about Ohio and will have no friends or family nearby. I was just wondering what it's like out there and what you like to do for fun with your kids. I'm very nervous, as we will be starting over from scratch with two very small children and no support system nearby.

Also, can anyone recommend a nice area in which to buy a home? We're looking for a good place for kids that is within twenty minutes' drive from Westlake. We were considering Avon/Avon Lake but really don't know much about the area.

Thanks in advance for your help!

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post. This is very scary for me, and it helps to know that there are friendly moms out in Ohio for support and advice! I'm sure you'll be hearing from me much more as we get closer to our move. Thanks again!

A., I am in Avon Lake and LOVE it! Schools are great and there is so much to do with the kids. Westlake is great but it is in Cuyahoga County which has much higher property taxes than Avon Lake which is in Lorain County. As for the kids, Join the Preschool PTA. It is a great way to meet other moms. They have outings for the kids and set up play groups. I met alot of new people that way. In Avon there is a store called Playground World. On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 am- 11am they let people bring in their kids to play. It is a bunch of the big play sets all inside...the kids love it and it is FREE! There is so much to do here. Good Luck.

Westlake is one of the nicer areas on the west side of Cleveland.
Some good areas to look at for homes would be Westlake, Rocky River, Avon/Avon Lake, Lakewood.

Good Luck!

You've already got some great advice. I live in North Ridgeville, which is in Lorain county. I grew up in Olmsted Twp., in Cuyahoga County, but decided on N Ridgeville because we like a more rural setting. If I were to move, I would also look @ Avon and Avon Lake because of the schools. I've heard very good things about them. I would also look @ Olmsted Falls, but as the others have said it's very expensive. good luck, and Welcome! Let us know when you're settled and we'll show you around! How old are your kids?

Hi A.-
I live in Elyria now which is about 15-20 from Westlake but I grew up in North Olmsted which is basically across the street from westlake I mean you litterally are in Westlake on one side of the street and then you cross the street and you are in North Olmsted in some areas. From what I know Westlake has a good school system and Avon and Avon Lake have very good school systems all three cities are very nice and but if I had a choice I would choose Avon just because I like the look of the houses and I like to stores/shopping centers in Avon but Westlake does have Crocker Park which is my favorite place to shop it is like a city within a city the way the shops and restaraunts are set up but as far as houses and school system I like Avon. I have four children and we are looking to move in the near future and both Avon and Avon Lake on my list of cities I would like to move to and they are in Lorain county not Cuyahoga county which makes a big difference when it comes to taxes. I am not sure if any of this helps but feel free to send me a message with any other questions and good luck with your move!!
