My 3 month old I believe has reflux. He started on the formula Enfamil then the Doctor changed it to Enfamil A.R. Lipil for spitting up. Xavier my son is still spitting up and the Doctor says the next step would be medication. I hate that fact I have to put him on medication so is their any other home remedy or something instead of medication. I have followed the Doctors suggestions as far as propping him up more then he finishes eating and during feeding. My son eats 6oz every 3 hours even when I just feed him 4oz he spits up. Can anyone offer any advice?

What can I do next?

Both of my children were spitters as well. My son was 1 until he stopped spitting up. After I stopped nursing we switched to low iron formula and that helped with both spitting up and constipation. (it also smells better)

Hi D.,
My 6 month old daughter Chloe has reflux as well. Her Dr's 1st step was also to put her on AR & that helped some with the spitting up but it was not enough & was put on Zantac, which is probaglly what your son would be taking. I too was uncomfortable with the idea of her being on medication. Her ped assured me that it was an extrememly safe med, with little to no side effects & is even safe for very small preemies. I gave it to her because I had no other real options. The med was A LIFE SAVOR!!!! She stopped spitting up completly! Plus she became a much happier baby! She was able to stop taking the med by 5 mnths (her ped said most are off of it between 4-6 mnths.) And even though she continues to need the Enfamil AR formula to help with spitting up she is perfectly fine without the Zantac now. You can email me if you have any additonal questions at: ____@____.com
Good Luck!!!
D.
PS Letting him sleep in a car seat where he can stay propped up is also VERY helpfull!!

If you want meds to be your last resort, give chiropractic a try. I used to be a skeptic on alternative approaches, but ended up in a chiro's office for some ongoing health issues with my 18 month old girl and it was the best decision I'd made in a long time! I would recommend that you give it a try, you may be surprised!

Just make sure you find a chiro that is comfortable and experienced with babies/children. We love ours--his name is R.J. Kelly and he is right off the Westpark Tollway and Gessner. ###-###-####. He is fabulous with children--we have been seeing him since our oldest daughter was 18 months and our youngest was 4 months.

D.,

I know your pain. My son had reflux when he was born. His first 2 weeks of life he was on medication for it. But if it helps my son grew out of it by the time he was about 3 1/2 to 4 months. The medication helped tremendously. He kept his formula down all the time. Don't worry, I know the last thing you want is to see your baby on meds already. In the end I don't think it's such a bad idea.

My son Xavier was also spitting up after every meal until recently. He is now almost 7 months old and doesn't spit up anymore. His doctor said a little spit was fine since he was gaining weight and didn't have any other issues.
After we fed him, we would keep him up right for at least 20 minutes and found that really helped. He started solids at a little after 4 months and was still spitting up until recently. It seems to be something they go through until they can learn to keep it in.
Is your son spitting up a lot or just a little each time? I was hesitant to put Xavier on any medications so we just made sure he didn't do tummy time until at least 1 hour after he ate. I was worried each time he did it but like the doctor said, it's just something some babies go through.

I hope you find a solution that works for you and your son.

My 2 children were the same way, "I" changed the formula to
Carnation (from walmart) and it worked! kept them satisfied, and no Reflux ! alot of people think with a new baby they have to use name brand formula !! carnation is just as good!
cheaper too ! try it, it may work for you like it did for ME!

My son spit up after every bottle almost.....not throw up, but just spit up. I had asked my dr about it and they changed him to the gentleease. But he would still spit up. So the dr said instead of putting him on medication to just wait until he could sit up, then if he was still spitting up after he ate then she would check him for reflux. As soon as he started sitting up, the spit up stoped. He is 10 months now and hardly ever spits up. Maybe just give it some time before you decide to put him on meds. Yes, it's messy, but I think worth it to keep a baby off of medication!

Good Luck!

My daughter was diagnosed with acid reflux at 1 months old. She threw up almost every bottle she ever drank. The doctor put her on soy formula pescribed her all the medications, we sat her up at every feding and nothing worked. As soon as she turned 7 months old and was eatting more solid foods it magically went away. She is now almost 3 years old and hasn't had any problems since. Every baby is diffrent, Good Luck with your Baby.

Our son, who is now 13 months, had reflux so badly it was diagnosed while he was still in the hospital after birth. It interfered with his breathing and oxygen levels. They gave us a super skinny syringe-dropper and a small dosage of Zantac twice a day. Miracle! You could tell exactly when he missed a dose. I hate giving my kids meds too, but I was never so happy after I saw him smiling. I'll never forget those shrieking reflux cries!
Good luck!

My three year old did the same thing til he was almost 7 months old. Everytime he would eat, I would burp him and then he would get hiccups and spit up after every meal. We tried everything, but the doctor wasn't concerned cause he was gaining weight and that is what they are looking at.

I have actually went through this very recently with my now seven month old daughter. She was the same. I do not know if your doctor ran any test but mine ran a tube down her throat to make sure it was reflux first, because some babies have a piece of skin in the back of their throats that does not close at birth and can cause reflux symptoms. But she did have reflux and was put on Enfamil AR. She was still spitting up but not as bad as it was. Her doctor said as long as she was no longer spitting up more then an oz. at a time it was okay. we kept her on the formula and now she is fine. Once she starting eating solid foods the reflux went away and now she is back on Enfamil with iron. So just hang in there and it will eventually go away once he starts to eat cereal and other things.Other then medicine there is really nothing else you can do but hang in there it will get better.

Baby Bliss Gripe Water! It is miraculous. I had two little ones with Reflux and medicine never worked very well. A nurse told me about this and it worked like a charm. We put it in their morning bottle and no problems all day. I know Tanglewood Pharmacy carries it. Good luck.

There is a WONDERFUL product on the market now designed for babies with acid reflux. It's called Colic Ease gripe water. Unfortunately there is only one place to purchase this in all of Houston and that is at The Breastfeeding Shoppe in Northwest Houston. We also carry The Baby's Bliss GripeWater, but for acid reflux babies, the Colic Ease is recommended. You can read more about these by going to our shopping cart at www.thebreastfeedingshoppe.com and clicking on Herbal Suppliments. Hope this helps-it's been a VERY popular item in our store!
