Red Face

My son is 6 months old and has started teething and with that...massive amounts of drool. When we put him down to sleep, he turns over on his stomach, and therefore...lays in drool. When we get him up, his face is very red. I am assuming from his drool. We were using regular detergent but have since switched back to Dreft and have lubed his face up with vasoline every time he goes down to sleep now. Seems to be getting a little better...any suggestions?

What can I do next?

We use Aquaphor for my 6 month old son's drool rash, and we bathe him with Cetaphil gentle cleanser so as not to irritate it. He has very sensitive skin anyway. We did the same for my toddler when he was this age. My oldest began drooling heavily at 5 months, but that first tooth didn't break through until he was 10 months old!

maybe try something a little thicker than vasoline like A&D ointment. They sell it by the diaper rash creams. It can be used in other places than their bottoms. It sounds like he really just needs a barrier between the drool on his bed and his face. His face will probably be like that until the drooling slows down.

My daughter had this around that age. It was very severe and blistered up. Her doctor said to use aquaphor. It is expensive and he told us we could use vasaline instead but we found the aquaphor worked much better. We just kept it as dry as possible and used more ointment during sleeping and eating times. It didn't go completely away though until she got out of this teething time. It seemed like forever and it looks horrible specially in 6 month old pictures! Good Luck.

T.,
My daughter has had rosy rashy cheeks since she was 3 months old because of teething. I posted the same question as you did around 5 months ago! I tried EVERY suggestion possible including the strange ones like breast milk and Desitin. Here is what works for our rosy cheeked cherub. We put Aquaphor on her cheeks every night. This protects her skin from the saliva and heals the rash. For some reason it works so much better than plain old Vaseline. We also use a product called Emily's skin soother http://www.emilyskinsoothers.com/ throughout the day. With persistence you can get those gorgeous smooth cheeks back. On days when I am lazy and don't put the ointments on every 30 min to an hour they flare up again. And sometimes even when I am diligent it will flare up just because the teething is so bad.
Good luck to you!

Hi T.,

Have you ever tried aquaphor. It seemed to work great for my son when he was going through the teething stage. You may just have to reapply every so often. Good luck.

You can also put some absorbent cloths (shammy style) between the mattress and sheet that will absorb the moisture. Just be sure to change it out and wash each day. A lot of these can be found as general "wipe up" towels. The benefit is that they are super absorbent without releasing the moisture.

I wouldnt put vasoline on it at all. It is a super duty moisteriser. You want to keep his face dry.

We found some soft absorbent cotton pads that can be tied down at Babies R Us. We put those under our boys' heads to mitigate the drool factor. Otherwise, we just used gentle laundry soap, quit using dryer sheets and did the vaseline thing.

Hi,
The skin absorbs anything that is put on it. Once it soaks in the body sees it as a toxin and has no easy way to eliminate it. Petroleum jelly is just that a petro-chemical. Sure it is natural, but not something you want absorbed into your or baby's body. Try Avalon or Aubrey products they use organic ingredients without synthetics or chemicals such as parabens, propylene glycol, petro products, lauryl sulphates, dyes, lanolin etc. Now a days we really need to read ingredients...there are no real regulations on products we put on our skin. Instead of neosporin, I like to use Calendula which is a natural antibacterial ointment, B & T (Whole Foods or Sun Harvest) makes a good one without parabens. I hope this helps. C

Mix small amounts of hydrocortizone, destin clear and some neosporin together and apply to the face everytime you think about it. Especially at night. Once the redness is gone you can just do the desitin clear. You can even leave off the neosporin if you would like.

First off, stop using Vaseline. We have always, until recently, used it for everything. I just read that petroleum actually makes things worse. So, most chap sticks also make things worse. The best chap-stick is Burt's Bees - it's all natural. Aquaphor is awesome. My 8 year old still drools constantly:) We put a very absorbent, soft handtowel under my son's face each time he slept. It seemed to help some. We put Burt's Bees on my son's red, itchy face. It doesn't bother him a bit. Good luck!

Aw poor baby. Well, I know that there is one thing that I use for keeping moisture in skin and repelling any unwanted moisture. It is called lanolin. It is in a purple tube in the baby section. It is also used for chaffing nipples for breastfeeding mothers. I have found it useful for many different situations though. Best wishes!
