Recurring MRSA - I Need More Help!

About a year and a half ago, we had our first experience with MRSA. My oldest son had it on the back of his thigh, and then my son and mom got it. After I got them doctored up, it was my turn. They have not had it since - but I have had it again and again and again. At least every 4 - 6 weeks. I can't take sulpher meds which I know are preferred for this but I take clindamycin and it works well. I have a skin problem (the surgeon called it "stupid skin" LOL), it tends to not want to heal properly, and he told me years ago that it would make me more suseptible to staph infections and such, but I didn't until we came up against mrsa. It's driving me mad! I finished up a round of meds early last week, and I started a new one today. I've done everything that I was told to do, from using a stiff brush to clean with (supposed to stimulate my skin to make it grow/heal right) to using nothing but antibacterial soap. I shower daily, scrubbing everywhere, and always have. I'm miserable and I have to say, it's affecting the little dab of self esteem I have left! I mean, it makes me feel like I'm a filthy dirty person - I must be to have it so often. NTM, the $$$ I shell out for Dr visits and meds. I just bought a little squirt bottle and large bottle of hydrogen peroxide to use to spray myself down with everyday, but I don't think it will help that much with preventing it. Please, does anyone else have/had the same problem? My mom and kids haven't gotten it anymore, just me, and I am at my wits' end. Thanks in advance to everyone who responds.

So What Happened?

Wow, I can't believe the response! Thanks to everyone who replied. I went back to the Dr today. We're adding another medication, and using a cream in my nose. If that doesn't work, I'll be going to a specialist. Thanks again for all the help.

I know that I have a friend who is susceptible to staph as well, he had to switch to all white linens and bleach every linen in the house at least 2xs per week for about a year to get completely over the last infection. Bleach the floors and spray the toilet and bath tub with bleach every time he used them...it finally got to where he wasn't getting infections anymore and could go back to his normal routine.

Nutritional support for your immune system is the answer since MRSA is so antibiotic resistant. Please check out my Web site at susanjordanbrown and I will be glad to help you. That's what I do, and I love helping people and making scads of new friends with my home business. I have a blog there for moms, so come visit, even if you aren't interested in our products -- although they are terrific. I can't legally tell on a public forum what they can do for specific diseases (FDA regulations), but I can say here that they are top quality, standardized products and that they improve wellness.

Has your dr said anything about locating the source? I know-a difficult problem. My daughter had problems with it a few months ago. Nothing seemed to work and her white blood cell count kept dropping instead of increasing to fight the infection. We were to the point that she was seeing a cancer dr and they were ready to do a bone biopsy because they couldn't determine why her wbc kept dropping. The day that she went in for the bone marrow biopsy, they redid her blood work and everything was back to normal. In the mean time, we tore her room apart and disinfected everything. No problems since then and she was the only one having the problem at the time. Could have been any number of things carrying the staph infection. She was working with the high school football team and their physical therapist at the time, so she was always in and out of the locker room(a great place for this stuff to breed). We also have dogs and a cat that she's always loving all over. How is your immune system? I'm diabetic and my immune system is shot, so I feel your pain when you describe how nothing will heal. What did your dr mean by "stupid skin"? Bet it makes it a little more tolerable to have a dr with a sense of humor.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Hi H.,

My husband had MRSA twice. Luckily the things they did & the drugs they gave him at the ER worked, but not without pain. Off the top of my head here's the only thing I could think of to help you. After your shower, while you're still in the tub, take a cup of apple cider vinegar & pour it into a picture (sp?) of cold water. Then pour it over your whole body. To prevent infections & illnesses we are supposed to be acidic on the outside & alkaline on the inside. Do it consistently & it just might help. (plus it will make your hair look great ;-)

I'll be praying for you.

My family went thru the same thing last year, and we finally got it cleared up with the antibiotics. Then, to keep it from recurring, we bleached the tub after every bath/shower for a few weeks, also bleached all sheets, blankets and pillowcases. We washed all of our clothes in hot water, twice. For about two weeks, I sprayed the toilet with Lysol after every use. I know it sounds extreme, but after passing it from person to person, it was necessary. Good luck!

My dad caught it in the hospital when he was having heart surgery. He continues to get it continually. My mom has to keep his legs clean and with lotion (Mary Kay's Visibly Fit is the best) daily. It keeps his legs from being so dry, which causes them to crack, which in turn makes it worse. He is diabetic, so he has to be very careful with his legs. He also uses Betadine when he is active MRSA, and keeps his wounds covered. His dr. gives him very powerful antibiotics ONLY as needed so he doesn't build up an immunity. He uses Visibly Fit to keep his legs moisturized, so they are less likely to crack. www.marykay.com/T..harris if you are interested in the lotion. It has great healing properties to it. I would think the peroxide on your skin would dry it out so that it cracks easier, and breaks out more easily. Good luck!

I went on a cruise in October 2007 with my sister and mother. Me and my sister came back with it. I guess I passed it around to my entire family because we have all had it since (but never before). The doctor suggested that since the majority of bacteria comes in through your nose to use an antibacterial ointment in your nose at least once a week. Also, when you bathe to put about 1/4 of a cup of bleach in your bathwater daily.

Hope this helps.....cause the stuff is really painful. When I first got it I had no idea what it was and let it go for about a week and a half and had to be hospitalized.

Good Luck!

Well I hate to say this but you could be going to far the other way because you need good bacteria to balance this out.

What I would do is get a bottle of PURE Lavender oil at a health food store, you can add some to your body wash to your lotion or just put it on your skin.
Lavender is a natural antibiotic, antiviral. For an extra kick get some Tea Tree oil and put it with the lavender. You can get the Tea Tree oil at the health food store with the lavender oil or some Walmarts carry it in the pharmacy area.
YOu can also get a spray bottle and fill it with water and add about 20drops of Laveder for a big bottle of water and spray it around the house to help clean the air.

I hope some of this helps

You might try eliminating the antibacterial soap. It actually kills off the "good" bacteria on your skin that helps fight off these things. Try a diet change too - MSG is in just about everything we eat that's been processed, and it severely weakens your immune system, among other lovely little nasties. I am a young cancer survivor and this change has helped both me and my family tremendously. :}

My son who is 25 and autistic had it as often as you did, if not more. It was driving him mad and I became frustrated because he was hurting so from me scrubbing and draining and using the clindamycin, peroxide and betadine. I changed to using nothing this soap called Miracle II that I ordered from Apple A Day and Beyond. It is natural and it kept his skin clean and moisturized without perfumes and other harmful ingredients. Right now I am only using antibacterial soap. I was told by one doctor that staph tends to reoccur in the back, shoulders and thigh areas -- places that stay moist or oily. I haven't had any problem with staph in months now. I am so thankful for my son's sake!! I pray for him often and that helps tremendously.

I hope you get this cleared up!

Have you tried putting bactroban creme in your nose and ears? My peds told me it can live there. Our whole family has battled this. Also, one time they prescribed my son a clindimyacin liquid to apply to his skin after showers. I think it is generally used to treat acne but also works on MRSA. Hope this helps.

have they did nasal swabs on everyone that lives in the house as it could be that someone is a carrier and it re-infecting you each time. Also did they treat your nasal area after your skin was clear? If not they need to. Let me know how it goes.

If you work with kids, there's the problem. Get a different job until it clears up! Sorry, that's what you need to do. The kids are germ factories and your body isn't in any condition to fight it off, especially during the winter/flu season!
