Rectal Prolapse/ Cystic Fibrosis

My thirteen year old son has CF.

The test that is used to screen for CF is called a sweat chloride test. In basic terms it is a coil that collects sweat. A high concentration of salt is a positive. The test is not painful nor is it invasive. It must be done by a facility that performs these tests for accuracy. I am not sure where you are located but DeVos Children's hospital in GR has a great CF care center.

Both parents have to be carriers of the defective gene, then you have a one in four chance of a child having CF. Direct linked cousins have higher rate of being carriers/having CF if it is in the family.

Just to give you a bit little peace of mind my very healthy nephew also had a rectal prolapse.

My son was tested for CF when he was about 14 months old. We went to Children's and he was given a sweat test. The first time the results were inconclusive so he had to have it done twice. The test is a little ancient looking which scared me, but it didn't bother him at all. The second test was negative. Good luck to your family. I hope your sister's little boy gets the same result.

My niece has CF and was diagnosed in-utero. It would seem hard to believe that your nephew's CF would go undetected for 7 years! I don't think the tests are painful or invasive. They do say that people who have CF are 'salty' tasting.
