Anyone know of good play sand for a sand box?
I bought the extra fine play sand from Home Depot and it is terrible! It is dusty and really sticks to everything.
I know sand is dirty but I know there is better stuff out there.
We accidentally bought the very dusty kind from Home Depot last summer - almost seems like concrete - and then that same week saw a special on the news about chemicals in that type of sand that is harmful to the lungs. We quickly got rid of that and bought the play sand! I would definitely replace what you have if you don't think it's play sand.
Washed sand that is used for concrete was the best we found -- and delivered the cheapest in the volume we needed (we had one of the big Little Tikes sandboxes. We paid $40 for a full box and never had a problem with dust... and it stuck together well when it was pressed and damp.
Make sure you get play sand! Toys R Us has a 50lb bag for $5!
Call your local garden supply place and as them if they have Mason sand... Its also known as play sand. AND its cheaper to buy it from them than Home depot...
How much do you need? We built a 6 ft x 6 ft box and I think we needed one yard... (funny story... I asked the lady on the phone and she "figured out" that we would need 9 - 10 yards to fill the box. lol One filled it to the top!!!! It would have been like a tractor trailer filled with sand... Thankfully hubby checked their #'s before we ordered it.)
You may be able to just get a few pounds if you go get it, but check around. I can't complain about the quality of the stuff we got. It actually falls right off of the kids even when wet... It did have a few pebbles and stones in it, but as the kids find it, we just put them on our stone walk way...
We've always bought our sand at Toys R Us and have liked it.
