Hi mamas and papas,

I need your thoughts/advice on whether a "sit and stand" or an inline-double stroller makes more sense for our 8 month old and almost 3 year old. We rarely use a stroller with our oldest, and we currently use a snap and go + infant carrier with the baby. However, we're getting ready to move the baby out of the infant carrier, and I'm looking for something to help transporting her be easier for grandma (who is her main caretaker during the day).

I started off just looking at umbrella strollers, but then I was worried about having "too much stuff" if we had to take both girls out. I really don't want to have various strollers and stuff laying around (nor can I afford it!). I think that a sit and stand would work (and would probably be lighter) since the oldest is pretty active, but I really like the idea that if we have both girls out (trips, weekends, etc) they are both able to relax/nap in a single stroller if needed. Currently we've been just putting the baby in the stroller and carrying the older one around when she gets tired. But, with both girls getting older, I imagine we'll be doing a lot more outdoor activities together. Does it make sense to have one "all-purpose" stroller....or should I just deal with having the variety of strollers for variety of uses?

What works for you and your family? I'm considering the Britax B Ready/ P & T Verve/ Baby Jogger City Select as far as doubles, and the Joovy Caboose Ultralight/ BabyTrend Sit and Stand.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hm...sounds like you mamas have mixed opinions too. Unfortunately the "that's all they've known" won't work for my little one since the stroller will be primarily for her when not used in 'double' mode. The 3 year old prefers walking, and can walk up to a mile on her own, but like many have said, she wants to ride in the stroller when she sees baby sister in one.

Off to the baby store to try out more strollers!

I'd recommend the double stroller over the sit and stand. I think it's better to have the option of him being able to sit if he needs to or is tired, and when he see's the baby sitting in the stroller he'll probably want to also (if he's anything like my two that are 18 mo. apart...they like to copy one another). If my older son (3) wants to get out, I let him and he just walks along beside the stroller. I always bring the double stroller over the single, because otherwise I run the risk of the 3 year old having a meltdown because he can't ride in the stroller.

I bought a BabyTrend double jogger stroller and it's great for what I need it for, lots of places to store things. I wanted one but knew I wouldn't be using it a lot, so I bought it used off Craig's List and got a great deal. It's great to have when you need it.

I found that at age three we were nearly done with the stroller. So glad I didn't invest in a double. A baby carrier and a good every day stroller totally got us by. On big theme park days, baby napped in the carrier and sister took a rest in the stroller.

I'd suggest one all purpose one along with having an umbrella for short stints. Our girls were 2 years apart as well...and the oldest was very active. However, even tho she hadn't sat in her stroller since she was 10 months old, once litlle sister was sitting up in a stroller the older one suddenly HAD to ride in the stroller as well. It actually wasn't unusual to have the little one walking and the big kid riding! IMO, the sit and stand isn't worth it. When the kid wants to sit you're screwed. Get an all purpose one and a couple umbrellas for the back of Mom and Dad's cars and you are set. I don't know what the stroller names are- but a side by side is a pain because it doesn't fit thru shopping aisles. We used an in line where the back seat was higher. Graco maybe? BTW- my girls are now 11 and 9 and the memories of that stroller are still fresh in my mind.

I got a side by side double with mine that are 2 years apart and I barely used it. I also had a sit and stand and barely used it. I still have the double in case we go someplace all day but I sold the sit and stand at my rummage because I hated lugging and pushing that thing around. Maybe the Joovy is easier because it's a bit smaller than the baby trend. I had the baby trend.

I wish I had the means to invent the stand and stand. A side by side where both can stand with benches where they can sit if they want. Oh and trays that pop down so they can eat. It would not work for kids that napped but would be great for ages 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 trying to walk long distances. Like a fair or large mall.

I'd get a USED sit n stand on craigslist. Don't buy new.

When my two were younger, I had both a double stroller and a sit and stand. I ditched the double and relied exclusively on the sit and stand. My oldest was a little older than yours (3.5) when I got it but she loved the ability to get on and off at will. I loved the fact that I didn't have to keep lifting her in and out. I took it overseas with me and it was a godsend traveling! My oldest even managed to sleep in it sitting on the platform, I just strapped her in and she managed just fine.

The Phil & Ted one is horrible - the kid in the back can't see anything. I borrowed one to use with my kids and neither would sit in the back. I have seen the sit and stand and they look great for what you need.

make the 3 yr old walk, seriously both my kids WALKED everywhere by 2 yrs old, and neither got too overtired or wandered off. Just take the time to teach the older child how to go on longer walks by working up to it, by 3 all my daycare kids can walk a mile without tiring. Also work on not wandering off, you can hang a rope onto the stroller that they must hold, or tell them to hold onto your coat or the side of the stroller. Trust me, I do this with 6 kids at a time, it's not that difficult to teach them to stay with you and listen.

We have the baby jogger citi select for our twins and we are getting the glider board for our 3 year old, but she does not nap in stroller and hasn't since 15 months. I wouldn't invest that much money in a stroller if it was just my 3 year old and on baby. What I don't like about the Phil and Ted is that the person in the back can't see anything but the seat in front of him/her and there doesn't appear to be much storage space. However, the Citi Select does have a lot of storage space. When we thought about having second kid and before we found out we were having 2 babies, we looked at the Baby Trend double sit and stand. If I remember you can either use it as a regular sit and stand or add the second seat.

I was in the same situation. I found these "stroller connectors" made by Prince Lionheart on the clearance stand at Babies R' Us while still pregnant with our second. BAM! Perfect! I bought 2 Contours by Kolcraft strollers from Wal-mart for $54 each. They are kind of something between an umbrella stroller and your full-on, Cadillac stroller. lol They have a good size little basket underneath them, a tray, a 5 point harness, and a sunshade, and they push LIKE A DREAM! When I want a double stroller I connect them. When we want two separate ones, or just one, then we have have them. It is the best of both worlds. I also bought 2 stroller bags from Babies R' Us so that I can attach them to one or both of the strollers for more storage when we want it!

We bought the Phil and Ted almost five years ago when my children were 3 1/2 and a newborn. We are still using it (used it just yesterday) when on long walks with my youngest who is now almost five. I love it because of the flexibility, and I feel like I have definitely gotten my money's worth. I have not had a problem with the younger one not wanting to sit in the back and not seeing. It wasn't a question as that is all he ever knew.
