I am looking for some recipes for the holidays to accomodate a friend who is a vegetarian and also cannot eat any dairy products right now due to her daughter's allergies (she is still nursing and he baby will break out in hives horribly). Particularly looking for side dishes or appetizer ideas.
TIA

When I need to go vegan I cook asian or indian. There are also a ton of soups and chills that are delicious, and vegetarian. Google african peanut soup.

Can you substitute Almond Milk for regular milk in your recipes? If you can, that might be a ton easier. My mom does that.

Good luck!

I'm not sure if you are looking for traditional sides that don't have meat or dairy or if you just want meal ideas in general, so sorry this is so long.

Some of my favorites to go with Thanksgiving:
mashed sweet potatoes (use earth balance instead of butter-great non-dairy substitute)-this recipe is pretty close to what I do, but with earth balance, not oil http://www.frontiercoop.com/store.php?Screen=recipe&r...
stuffing-http://www.savvyvegetarian.com/vegetarian-recipes/vegan-s...
green bean casserole-I love this version and have made it with soy milk instead of creamer http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2006/11/best-vegan-green-bea...
Mashed potatoes (made with soy milk or vegetable stock and earth balance) with mushroom gravy-http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Mushroom-Gra... (I just use cremini or button and it's still delicious)

Other sides I like (that could also go with a holiday mean, but I make them all the time):
Roasted asparagus
Roasted potatoes
green beans almondine
steamed carrots with a drizzle of maple syrup, molasses or brown sugar
sauted greens with garlic and pinenuts (chard, spinach, etc)
quinoa-http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/quinoa-side-dish/detail.aspx
couscous with zucchini and corn-http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/couscous-summer-vegetable...
steamed broccoli or cauliflower

For appetizers:
hummus with pita chips or veggies
guac or salsa with chips
stuffed mushrooms-http://www.veganpiggy.com/2010/05/vegan-stuffed-mushrooms...
potsticker or eggrolls with dipping sauce
white bean bruschetta-http://vegandad.blogspot.com/2009/03/white-bean-bruschett...
edamame

I personally do nothave any recipes but you could check your local library for vegan cookbooks. They might even have some that focus on holiday meals. Good luck!

Just search online for "vegan" recipes. They are free of ALL animal product including dairy and eggs. You can make some great vegetarian dishes with tofu as the main protien source, bu anything with brown rice and beans will also contain all of the essential amino acids for any concerns about being nutritionally balanced. There are lots and lots of things you can do with fruits, veggies, nuts seeds and grains. It's truly not as hard as you might think. Stop by Sprouts or Whole Foods or Central Market and pick up some dairy-free margarine and an alternative milk (coconut, rice, almond or soy) They can be used to replace their dairy counterparts. I personally limit meats, and can't have dairy, corn (corn syrup, corn startch), or wheat, and we still have a giant, delectable, varied spread for the holidays.

You can still make mashed potatoes and so forth just use rice or almond milk. With almond milk you may want to ask first though if there is a nut allergy. My daughter has dairy allergy and we just substitute with stuff like that you can only taste a minor difference (it isn't as creamy).

Well you can make your mashed potatoes with vegetable stock rather than milk and cream, that's a good start. I make a roast baby carrot dish with no dairy, eggs, meat of any kind. And rolls, too. Pasta salad.

Easy enough to make stuffing with no meat or dairy products, too, right?

:)

(If you're thinking of something not normally served as a traditional TG dish, what about Thai food? Lots of peanuts/sesame for the protein instead of meat, and no dairy either. Maybe go to Food Network.com for some ideas?)

How about a chili? Everyone loves chili. And you can make it with some little custy rolls or coissants and serve as an app.

Google vegan appetizers and side dishes. You'll come up with LOTS.
